. separate question for you guys (again without the benefit of a replay) ... was their goal off-side?

. nobody seems to have mentioned it ... so it probably wasn't. from my vantage point at least one in the middle looked to be offside - but not sure if it was the goal scorer or not ... or whether that mattered
Yes in front from the penalty spot onward

I just saw a replay. I freeze framed it at the point the ball was crossed. Powell was behind the ball; not offside.

. a further question from the un-educated then ... how and when is a player 'played on-side'?

. i know i could probably 'google it' but i reckon you guys would make it easier to understand ... plus there will probably be some disagreement ;)

. oh and i would like to add, it was finally good to see/hear:
  • a reasonable crowd (making a bit of noise) ... simple chants people - very effective
  • commitment across the park
  • booing whenever Muscat touched the ball
  • A WIN!
. it was like old times

. what was not good to see was the half-arsed visit by the players to the fans (not venturing over to the long-suffering fans on the East ... was quite sad under the circumstances)

I'm just as uneducated as you, BK. Some cursory reading on wiki suggests Powell was indeed offside, even though he was behind the ball when it was passed. It has to do with the interpretation of "active involvement". It's beyond my comprehension... I'm sure other, more learned forumites can elaborate.

Yes, I noticed that. Even though I sit on the west side, I was quite disappointed that they seemed to miss an opportunity to thank the fans on the east.

Maybe (and this is no excuse) they were keen to hit the showers and get out and watch the fireworks. I was standing near a few of the players when the fireworks were happening, and they had their families around them. Perhaps they were prioritising that over going around both side of the stadium to thank the fans... ???

. and i, also, could partially accept that if they hadn't spent so long just lingering in the middle before waiting for someone to tell them what to do. their dis-jointed approach just seemed to make it worse

. i think that by the time monty told them what to do some had already made their way to the north-west corner as a cruel short-cut ... which was only partially corrected

Having seen the replay, they both deserved a red. The AR seemed to flag and the ref went over before issuing both cards.

Didn't the MRP citing process get changed after Sack whack to give them the power to cite even if the ref dealt with it on the pitch?

I'd say Roy might be due a holiday.

Tony Pignata was saying on twitter that the rule had changed some time ago, and that the MRP can look into incidents even if there's a YC - he said that the Joel Griffiths incident might have been the catalyst.

We can't feel hard done by if he gets a holiday - he bloody well deserves it.

Imagine if he (and he alone) gets sent off at that point? 2-0 up, a man down, 30 (?) to play? I wouldn't fancy our chances of keeping the win.

And if we'd have dropped points there would have been hell to pay.

He deserves a break for being stupid.

It will all depend on what the Ref gave him a yellow card for & wrote in the match report.

i.e: if card was for say hypothetical 'push & shove - then I believe MRP can take a look at it, as the head-butt would be deemed 'missed' by the officials.

If the Ref gave him a yellow (which I highly doubt) for 'head-butting' an opponent then it will be The Referee who will be getting a suspension for failing to give a -red-card'.

Either way, I think RO'D will be extremely lucky if he doesnt get at least a week like Simon, if not more.

That's not how it worked with the sackwhacker - he was booked for verbal dissent.

A player is in an offside position if he's in his opponent's half, closer to the opponent's goal line than the 2nd last defender (usually the keeper is the last, but not always), and in front of the ball. While the scorer was past the 2nd last defender, he wasn't in front of the ball, so this was definitely not offside.
Also it can be any body part - even just a shoulder or a knee (but not the arms - enough to put a player off, and when it's a close call the freeze frame doesn't really have the resolution to show that level of detail.

This would seem to be a cover-all in the A-League Disciplinary Regulations

Obvious Error – FFA Citations
9.40 Where FFA in its sole and absolute discretion believes:
(a) that a Referee has made an Obvious Error;
and
(b) a failure to remedy the Obvious Error would be prejudicial to the interests or
good image of football in Australia,

FFA may issue to the Participant a Disciplinary Notice that:
(c) includes reasonable details of the alleged Offence;
and
(d)refers the matter to the Disciplinary Committee for hearing to determine
whether an Offence has been committed and if so, what sanction should be
imposed in accordance with these Regulations

I can't think of a more obvious error than this then. I wouldn't be surprised to see 8-12 weeks for this.
But Muscat MUST get cited as well.

Well f*ck me... we can be entertaining and win at the same time!

For his first full A-League game that was a great effort by Heward-Belle - let's hope he can keep it up.

Didn't see O'Donovan/Muscat at the time (I was watching the rest of the players) but from what I've seen now he deserves a good 2-3 weeks.

Terrible sure, but it wasn't premeditated, it only happened because Muscat ran in for some more afters - and Roy's inner Celt took over. All happened inside only a second or two. One of the reasons it was so impressive in a combat sense. If he wasn't on a football field he'd be arguing self defence.

This other person grabbed me, then he elbowed me, then he lashed out again at me and missed, at this point I ran off, but he chased after me and so as he ran in, I spun and struck out just before he attacked me again. :headbutt::innocent:

While not condoning the headbutt there is an element of this in there. Roy, as has been stated here earlier has gotten away with a bit this season. However, he is usually on the receiving end of some pretty shabby treatment himself, receiving numerous elbows to the head over the course of the season. This one caught his eye and was in full view of the ref. He asked the question - got ignored and Muscat came back for afters.

I think the upshot of this is that both he and Muscat will have a holiday - with Roy out for longer. KGJ will also go - and let's hope on Roy's return that he gets a bit more protection as well.

As an aside, I had a look at the comments for one of the club's Facebook posts about the game (yeah, I know that's hazardous to your health), and saw this:

I agree with this Pat but on a lighter note it was good to see a bit of tempers flaring and good to see young McGing come to Roys aid when he was swamped.
Also on the light side. Wellington should be fined for leaving a player on who has been snotted by a garden gnome.

Morning All. Happy New Year.

Well I enjoyed last night. Looking back on it now I don't think it was a penalty, but looked like it at the time.
I thought maybe Austin was offside leading up to it too. And whoever the Phoenix player (Bonevacia?)
was whispering sweet nothings in Fabio's ear before he took the penalty should have been booked.

I didn't see the Roy incident as I was watching the play. I've only seen the headbutt, not the Muscat elbow on video.
I'm not sure if there's a set ban for violent conduct, but if there is I think Roy will get the max. I expect Arnie will
be on the phone to the FFA demanding it after Simon got a week. Looking at the Kevin Muscat wiki page he got a couple
of weeks a few times for violent conduct, so maybe Roy could only be out for a fortnight. I expect the FFA will come down
heavier than that though.

I briefly spoke to Anthony Caceres in the car park before the game. I asked if he was going to Sydney. He said "not as far as I know".

My fault for stating CEO not owner (hey, it was late) - and I'm not too proud to admit that on there either - little disappointed with the response though.
Interesting to see how closely they're following social media though. Actually, good thing that the CEO keeps an eye on things.
