ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

I'm just as uneducated as you, BK. Some cursory reading on wiki suggests Powell was indeed offside, even though he was behind the ball when it was passed. It has to do with the interpretation of "active involvement". It's beyond my comprehension... I'm sure other, more learned forumites can elaborate.

A player is in an offside position if he's in his opponent's half, closer to the opponent's goal line than the 2nd last defender (usually the keeper is the last, but not always), and in front of the ball. While the scorer was past the 2nd last defender, he wasn't in front of the ball, so this was definitely not offside.
Also it can be any body part - even just a shoulder or a knee (but not the arms - enough to put a player off, and when it's a close call the freeze frame doesn't really have the resolution to show that level of detail.

. Cap'n ... so he is 'played on-side' by one of his own players (with the ball) rather than requiring to be 'played on-side' by one of our players?

'Active involvement' is only relevant if the player is in an offside position. Active involvement basically means the player will only be penalised if he touches the ball (including a deflection from a defender, goalpost or keeper), or if he is blocking the keeper's view, or physically in the way of a defender (in

Played 'on-side' by the ball really!
Directly from the Laws of the Game:
A player is in an offside position if: • he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

p36.. Goes into much more detail from p110 onwards, if you care to read that much

So, because the 2nd attacker was behind the ball, he wasn't in an offside position (and don't forget, offside is 'reset' with each attacking touch. So, he may have started his run in front of the ball, but the moment there's a touch by a teammate and he isn't in an offside position, he's in the clear). Make sense?

Look at it this way - if there wasn't that requirement to be in front of the ball for offside, then an attacker would never be able to play a square ball to a teammate after they've beaten all the defenders!

Not that it's relevant here, but just because it comes up so much and it's such a misunderstanding, direction of the ball is irrelevant as well - you can be penalised for offside if the ball is played backwards (say, you're in an offside position, ball is played into space behind you, and you run back past the defenders to retrieve the ball).

Rugby league might be the simplest way to describe it.

If a player ran through the defence heading to the try line and no defenders are in front of him but a player from his own team runs next to him to support.

If the support stays behind the ball runner he can receive the pass because he is onside. If he runs in front and he receives the ball he is offside.

The difference being rugby can only pass backwards but in football you can pass forward as long as the support is behind at the time of the pass.

The defence is irrelevant.

. thanks but no

. that was what i needed help with ... thanks, it's very much appreciated. i wasn't sure if somebody who was in an otherwise offside position had to be played on side by the defending team

. i wouldn't have queried it if the 2nd attacker had 'come through' with the attacking move - he was in an 'offside position' when the ball was played through to attacker no. 1

At least the Kiwi commentators are consistent. They have always cheered for their team so we can expect more of it today
