Im not so sure we really missed Austin all that much.

He's an excitemrnt player who can run very very fast in straight lines (like a white Appiah really) everyone loves to see it but can be a bit 1 dimensional.

One of the dangers we face every game is knock it behind, centre mid has to come across and the centre backs are exposed. Sound familiar.

We aren't good enough to leave the fullbacks exposed and maybe a genuine 442 might be the go (Bingers in the Mcbreen role)

. sorry i haven't posted on here much recently because i am still catching up on my reading ... but i am posting because yesterday was such a weird experience

. the sunnyside was almost devoid of mariners supporters ... we were mostly surrounded by baby blue supporters

. the first three-quarters of the match we were struggling to find anyone that actually looked they gave a shit - i don't know if that was my mood, the mood of the crowd or the mood of the team (perhaps all three)

. a particular couple of sydney 'supporters' a couple of rows in front probably didn't help the mood either ... for the first time i started to understand how things can get out of hand at a football game. never game enough to look at you when they made snide remarks about our support or comments on the officiating ... but they also didn't hold back on their commentary of some of their own players - overall, it was a very depressing place to be. particularly given the season we have had

. we celebrated harry's goal-line clearance because it showed some commitment ... i can't remember the last time i saw a goal line clearance - my hopes it would see a turning point in 'fight' were ultimately realised ... to a degree. it was good to see the Mariners of old lift towards the end and come from so far behind and so far down ... a revelation? we can continue to hope

. seeing the boys wandering around seemingly disinterested my thoughts turned to the officiating (again). it must be hard for these guys to maintain any type of intensity considering the situation they constantly find themselves in. experience, coaching and team selections are all factors that can be worked on ... but the officiating can't

. before people jump on about they're professionals, etc, etc ... i challenge anybody to say that they can continue going to work and maintain intensity when the 'conditions' are constantly against them ... a couple of weeks - OK, maybe a month ... but a whole season?

. when you are constantly seeing yourself or your teammates being penalised, carded or sent off yet the opposition seem to be able to get away with similar or worse behaviour constantly ... not only will it raise doubt in your mind it must also weigh on your motivation particularly when 'intensity' is the first things to be penalised (if you catch my drift)

. regardless of all that - it was such a weird experience because i left last night strangely pleased with the result:
  • pleased that we grabbed a point
  • pleased that the boys showed some interest in getting a result (albeit late)
  • pleased that sydney couldn't hold on despite the assistance they received
  • pleased we managed to finish a match with a full complement of players
  • pleased that those smart arses from sydney had to skulk away with their 'the game was over at half time comments' nibbling away at them

I think J.Rose looked more disciplined than Austin at 11, but sacrificed a little bit of speed. But he is reasonable on the ball.

Fab looked frustrated most of the day; he tried too hard on the ball to do the 'special' things, shot when he should've passed and he *often* overran when a pass didn't come.

. our wingers have caused me more angst this season than many others ... and i mostly think that is down to our 4-3-3 entertaining mantra

. it has made us too wide and our repetitive approach is only exasperated by a one dimensional winger too fast for anybody else and a typically non-existent midfield. i find it interesting that one of the posts above referred to us playing a 4-4-2 ... i couldn't determine that our formation had changed

In spite of persistent fouling (side note - how did L.Rose get a card for persistent fouling but no Sydney player did?)

. and if i remember correctly he picked it up when he was receiving intense 'attention' from two sydney players - i was astounding it was rosebud that was not only penalised, but carded

. sorry mr fulham i was responding to other posts before i saw yours ... i have been harbouring similar thoughts for a while

. to expand on what i stated in that response:
  • our three man midfield hasn't been up to the task
  • they can't get forward to assist our fast break attacks
  • they can't cover the inevitable turn-over in defence
  • our inexperienced defence has struggled to pick up the pieces
  • our two oldest players form the nucleus of that three-man midfield (accompanied by one of the youngest who may not have the endurance yet)
  • earlier in the season we were carrying a couple of midfielders who simply failed to step up to the standard their reputation and experience should have enabled
  • our striker is isolated
  • we have one speedy winger who is so left footed he makes rosey look like a natural right footer and as such is predictable (except for his first game which i think too many people remember too fondly)
  • we have another speedy winger with too much expectation and too little support from his teammates who then takes on too much
  • we struggle to make accurate short passes or hold onto the ball so a system which relies on accurate long passes and then expecting somebody to hold the ball until help arrives will always cause us problems
. i think we need to take another step back on our philosophy and get some more of the basics right ... then build from there

. our structure provides a reasonable representation of our season (on the pitch at least) ... trying to do too much with too little

. it also reflects our off field in that significant change has happened too quickly for many people to come to terms with

. perhaps next season will see better balance throughout

I expected to find all sports of discussions on Smeltz' goal but have come out sorely disappointed, so I'm guessing that in wrong in my view that he was far enough offside for me to land a jumbo in that space. I had a quick look at the replay but I guess I can't see the forest for the trees.
Would some kind heated soul consider reviewing it for me? :)

Not entirely conclusive - camera is at an angle, and from this distance it lacks the resolution for close calls anyway. This may have been just a moment after the ball was kicked too. Looks to me like Smeltz is slightly further away from the lighter green patch than our defender. Worst case scenario would be very close it if was offside, but I'm pretty confident it was on. At least the AR was right in position too. Good quick free kick really.
Not great defending whoever it was that tracked back - you need to stay on your feet around the box unless you're 110% certain you're going to make the tackle or you literally have no choice. That was a bit amateur, Smeltz just sucked him in with a fairly ordinary inside cut.

And of course our other defender (can't tell who's who) would have been able to stop him had he actually chased him immediately rather than standing there pointing at the sky. I don't know why defenders sacrifice defending in favour of playing 'bend and stretch', it's such AA9 stuff.

Man, how glorious was O'Donovan's strike......

Sydney fans played up badly on the train both before and after the game.

SMH has it. Someone punch a lady police officer and was arrested for it.

Classy
There was an incident when the train pulled into Hornsby after the game and about 5 or 6 fans got kicked off & the train delayed by about 5 mins but I didn't see anything else.

Bringing the discussion back onto an even keel, I thought that we looked a little ponderous getting forward. A lot of the time it was because we were missing good runs because releases were held up too long or passes were misdirected.

Nailed it.

The timing and accuracy of the passes was much better at the start of the season than it is now.

There are some obvious resins for this.
Opposition players are getting into our players faces and due to inexperience or lack of ball skills they panic.
After a couple of bad defeats to the "entertaining football" our play has become more conservative with players not forcing one touch passes.
Also there has been an overall loss of confidence (not surprising), and you definitely need self belief to play attacking, exciting, one touch football.

However a few thoughts on the game.
It looked like someone gave a good half time talk, immediately on resumption, there was much more enthusiasm.
Bingers held up the ball well and proved to be a great target man. The 4 4 2 suited him.
Love Roy's enthusiasm (and love having a real striker).
Posco is the find of the season.
Looking forward to hearing from Wombat and whether he thought the 442 worked.
In any other game Ryall would have been off four two blatant yellows. The first when he made out like he needed a stretcher after a disgusting challenge and the second when he clearly pulled Rose back when he was clear.
CCM SFC games are always entertaining for one reason or another.
Bring on season 12.

Coming back to snatch a draw from 2-0 behind is enjoyable at any time; coming back to snatch a draw when we haven't scored in three games and had lost the last six on the spin is the stuff of ecstacy.

This :goodpost:.

As for Sainsbury on Twitter he is another of the Arnie camp. Digs us at every opportunity.

Hmmm...not the first time Mariners have celebrated a 91st minute equaliser against Sydney FC at home!
3rd March 2012 - Hearfield equalises
20th March 2016 - Ascroft equalises

Weren't CCM coming 1st at the time?
Drawing against a 7th placed Sydney???

But a 10th placed mariners drawing against a 7th placed Sydney shouldn't be celebrated?

Keen to see if Sainsbury replies to me on twitter :p

AM,
I was in Qld at a family party so missed everything.
Checked in on the scores on my Moby and was staggered to see us get back in after 85 min.
My smile was very wide!
Love to hear the thoughts of FP.
I appreciated Dibo's and your thoughts on the game.
Some people are saying it was the worse game ever seen at BT but the reports are a bit conflicting.

Interestingly I left my two season tickets in a shoe box on my verandah. I offered them to a few people to use...first in best dressed.
They were unused!
One wag text me back he would rather shove bamboo under his fingernails.
