AM,
I was in Qld at a family party so missed everything.
Checked in on the scores on my Moby and was staggered to see us get back in after 85 min.
My smile was very wide!
Love to hear the thoughts of FP.
I appreciated Dibo's and your thoughts on the game.
Some people are saying it was the worse game ever seen at BT but the reports are a bit conflicting.

I have the game recorded and will try to watch it some time this week and try and give a Wombat style report.

In brief we were careless and slow with passes, got caught napping for their second goal, but showed amazing heart and determination to stuff up the Smurfs' faint hopes. :pirashoot:

If you'll forgive the presumption ;-) - for mine I think it was the worst 80-odd-minutes I've seen at BT - last 15 were excellent ;-)

But in fairness that want just down to the team. My experience of it being that dire was a sum-total.
Sydney was shite, ref was horrid and our boys were uninspired for much of it.
Once that's said, I've seen worse defensive performances with Zac and Bosnar in defence than I saw on our end yesterday. So a bit of a mixed bag really and it felt a lot more confidence related than anything else, I thought.

Wombat I had to work in Sydney and didn't get back up in time, so I was going to rely on your thoughts and others on here also.

Will watch a replay but sounds like I should fast forward to around the 80 minute mark or risk experiencing large bout of ref rage. :headbutt:

Glad to here Ascroft had a good game as personally like 'coach' really hadn't been rating him that much last couple of months. Prefer Uskok, Posc, McGing.

That said, much like Izzo is in danger of proving, it's more than a bit crazy to write off young players early. Will always take time for training performances/levels to translate into game days - and the less supported they are - as in surrounded by experience - the more they'll struggle.

Sainsbury is a perfect (and pretty timely example). I've said it before, but stick Trent into a less experienced back line and his breakthrough/growth would have been very different. His first few games looked as bad or worse as any of our back lines shockers this year.

For Wombat as promised.

Izzo – 6 Couple of good saves, showed more adventure in leaving his line, made a total mess of it once though.

Posco – 7 Made a good fist of right back, solid in defence. A good sub.

Neil – 6 Probably his best game this year at left back. Improving

McGing – 6 Good game, Improving

Ascroft – 8 MOM Defended well, showed anticipation. Good goal, massive clearance off the line. Somewhat at fault for 2nd goal. Came out a long way to tackle, free kick went to SFC, taken quickly before he was back in position. No one else covering, nor stepping up to trap offside. Team caught by quick thinking.

Monty – 7 Usual solid game. The season and age are starting to show. Injured at half time, looked like a knock to the shin.

L. Rose – 5 Looks like he has more to offer, would like to see him improve his tackling ability. Work in progress.

J. Rose – 7 good game but playing out of position. Set up a goal for Roy that was disallowed by incorrect os call. Worked his but off for the full 90.

Fab – 5 Trying to do too much by himself needs to use support more. Mind you many times support was not there or he was heavily marked by SFC who saw him as the danger.

Bingers -6 Very good as target in 442 structure. Controlled the long ball well but was unsure what to do next and got caught in possession too often. Needed more midfield support.

Roy – 7 MOM (2) Great goal, never stops hassling the opposition defence. It is great to have a true striker. Love his enthusiasm.

Stella – 5 Came on at half time, probably not a bad am but too slow at this level. Useful squad player?

Overall – 442 worked better than I expected. It left the midfield open and slow in transition. We really need a narrow diamond in attack for it to work well. We did not try to play the ball out from the back as much but played the long ball fairly effectively.

Our shape got pulled apart occasionally by good attacking play by Sydney (1st goal) and was lacking sometimes in attack due to enthusiasm (toomany in a line up front, no depth).

2 up front, 4 across the back, 2 wide wingers left a lot of space in the middle.

However not a bad go at a new formation.

We did look fairly porous from about the 60 min mark, but were 2 nil down and playing further up the park chasing the game and vulnerable to counters. But from the 70 min mark we looked truly dangerous and played all over them.

It did pay off in the end.

We were not as bad as many of the comments here would lead you to believe.

First half was pretty even and in the end we were unlucky not to snatch it at the death.

The most pleasing aspect was the enthusiasm and heart shown. Bodes well for the future.

Bozza and Rudan clearly have it in for CCM. Half time punditry was disgustingly biased and extreme criticism unjustified. Peacock appeared embarrassed by Bozza’s calls.

They made Zelic sound intelligent.

I was furious at halftime with the analysis. Bozza and Rudan were ripping into us suggesting we were just waiting for Sydney FC to score but I recall a run where we had some 4-5 shots on goal around the 30' mark. It was just painfully biased.

We went
Izzo
Posco McGing Ashcroft Neill
Fab Monty L Rose J Rose
Roy Bingham

Izzo didn't put any kicks out on the full. First goal had a wicked swerve on it and second exposed 1 on 1. Made a good save on the goal line save by Ascroft but never really tried to get back but Ashcroft saved his bacon.
McGing is looking terrible
Ashcroft was crap first half great in the second. Jekyll and Hyde
McGing and Ashcroft don't go well together.
Neill enjoyed not having to attack and defend and was pretty good.
J rose put a couple of nice through balls through
Fab was horrible. Double teamed when in Syd half, they definitely saw him as a threat and frustrated him. He didn't suit 442. Probably his worst game for us.
Roy had a shot blocked from a header flick on from a corner early and the shots on target run was broken. If scored might have been different, but his goal was great.

Midfield was bullied and ref let a lot of physical stuff go and we didn't like it. He lost his cards and we suffered as Sydney just fouled us all day.

Big holes at the back in first half

Just a really flat atmosphere and the players just looked like they couldn't be bothered but we did have periods of dominance and came close right after half time.

Arnie was antsy early in the 2nd half, he must of seen what I couldn't. I said to the missus they are up 2-0 and cruising and he is fired up but TW is on his arse enjoying front row seats. Arnie could sense what I couldn't and we came home strong as they blew a couple of chances on the break.

Would like to watch the replay because seemed ordinary at the game but that could just have been the season getting to us.

I recommend it. I was much more impressed with the team watching how they were playing closely on the replay rather than the impression I got live.

I think the difference may be that at the match you tend to follow the ball, but when you watch the replay you can concentrate on players positions and if necessary run replays to see what went wrong or right. Play your own replays, don't just follow Fox's and do yourself a favour, turn the sound off. ;)

Thanks Big Al and AM for those reports.

One of my mates (turned down the free tickets to the game) lives right next to the Racecourse.
He turned off the game after 60 mins as we were 2 nil down and according to him diabolical. He told the girlfriend she can watch whatever she likes and wanders off.
30 mins later he is having a smoke in the back garden and heard all this cheering coming from the stadium. A few minutes later it's even louder.
He runs upstairs and wrestles the remote back to see us win our 1st point in 6 weeks.

I waited until last night to sit back and watch the replay of this game (after 24hrs's emotion reduces a little).

I found a number of things, some have been mentioned, some have not;

1. The commentary was worse than biased, it was unreasonable, when we defended well it was poor mistakes from Sydney! when we attacked well it was a lack of desire by Sydney! If Sydney strung 2 passes together they were on fire and we were 'Pathetic'! They did try to paddle on Shootout later, they seemed embarrassed

2. The refereeing was terrible, but at least he didn't pull yellow cards out like lollies

3. I have seen penalties given for the tackle on Neill in the box in the last 5 mins' (aka Musket on Rose earlier this year)

4. I will temper my comments on Ashcroft a little, I think I was harsh on him on the first goal, it was more a lack of urgency from McGing. Ashcroft still gets caught ball watching too much for a centre back. He may make a defensive midfielder, work rate will be the key.

5. We sat way too far back when Monty went off

6. Over and over again we defend really well then, through a concentration lapse, we ship goals.

7. Young Rose does some very good things and his work rate is improving, he needs a mentor to follow on the field, he is still making mistakes that I consider spacial and mostly due to a lack of direction.

8. Izzo needs to talk, I could not hear him at all on Saturday

9. Josh Rose got 2 points from Foxtel, must have been watching a different game to me. Over hit at least 8 passes

10. Posco is the real deal, please keep him long term. Tell him to stop hitting 50m angle passes.

11. Bingham has potential, he has been exposed to this level very early, I think he can develop into something for us in the future

12. I admire their determination, it would be very easy to essentially give up based on the season they have endured!

On the commentary... I watch online - when I'm not at the game... The one downside is that I don't have easy access to a replay.
I've been frantically looking through highlights packages hoping to see a replay of Roy's "offside" goal... Nothing.. Zip, zero, zilch,nada... Normally for these, whether or not they're actually contentions, there's days and days of discussion from Fox, following the game, about whether or not it was actually offside or not.
Even with that, I might be deaf but I came across a single, longer, commentary replay of the Smeltz goal - I could've sworn Zelic grudgingly suggested that he actually looked offside when the line was brought up - which confused me because nothing was highlighted.

I swear Fox just really don't give a toss about us at this point, our games are just something for them to get through so they can go do a line and get ready for the nightly EPL game.
Which is understandable from a quality POV, but still frustrating when you're paying for a product...

they showed Roy's 'offside' goal on the replay (Fox) and even the commentators agreed they were all definitely onside. it was a 100% goal incorrectly called offside.

so we actually scored 3 legitimate goals that game. I'd be angry if the points would have meant anything to us

F*** That! I'm p****d anyway now... Wouldn't have cared if it was Perff or Adelaide or whatever, but considering how shitty the ref was in the first place and how much Sydney got the rub of the green in the first game as well, it's just s***...
Along with how Arnie reckoned they had it in the bag ;)

Doesn't make a difference to anything that I'm p*****d, except to my blood pressure, but there it is ;)

I'm really, really surprised that no one has mentioned the fact, or perhaps no-one noticed that when Ascroft scored in the 91st minute, the whole bench jumped up screaming with elation turning to the Bay16 end where the goal was scored

BUT

Brice Johnson (S&C Trainer) instantly, without even thinking, turned to the right and ran screaming and fist pumping to the SydFC bench with an absolute undeniable look of 'FCUK YOU' written all over his face.

Would love a time-machine to go and sit side-line to see what that resulted in from SydFC's bench.

Also after the whistle was blown -

Arnie being followed right on his back by the Fox camera man when going to shake hands post game .........
.....then suddenly turning and giving the camera guy the 'FCUK OFF mate' look (which he duly did) probably gives a hint to what was a likely scenario earlier with Brice perhaps.

Priceless in my book.

Mate, I noticed the exact same thing when I watched he replay (of the last 15 mins only... couldn't bring myself to suffer through the other 75 mins ). I thought it was such a shame that he ran out of the picture frame and that the camera didn't follow him. It would've made for some memorable viewing. I wonder what was said???

Hmmm...not the first time Mariners have celebrated a 91st minute equaliser against Sydney FC at home!
3rd March 2012 - Hearfield equalises
20th March 2016 - Ascroft equalises

Weren't CCM coming 1st at the time?
Drawing against a 7th placed Sydney???

But a 10th placed mariners drawing against a 7th placed Sydney shouldn't be celebrated?

Keen to see if Sainsbury replies to me on twitter :p

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/article/2016/03/31/sainsbury-claims-china-not-graveyard-his-career

Asked if he had received much feedback about his comments, Sainsbury replied: "I've had a few bad reactions from the fans, but I don't think they see the point of view that I'm coming from.

"I mean, when you've got the squad celebrating a draw against a Sydney FC side that's down on their luck and you're coming bottom of the table, it doesn't set a good precedent for the team.

"If you want to celebrate those sort of points then you might as well celebrate a loss, which is just not good enough. It just shows how the mighty have fallen and I think it all starts from the owner and chairman of the club. The Mariners are not investing in the right type of players."

Pretty confident Sains is one of the Arnie tribe that has an axe to grind

Errrm, oooooor still caring even when you're spooning is a good thing?? Saying that Young players showing good spirit is evidence of being happy to spoon is ridiculous. If china fails - a job at fox beckons Trent.

Not wrong on our roster or expenditure on balance - but thats hardly a f**king revelation is it. Trent needs to do more than listen to Fox and Arnie if hes still genuinely interested in the club - as theyve been saying they needs to bolster and spend nore for a while now - and also that this year wasnt good enough.

Mc has clearly made some enemies. And trent just comes across as sounding uninformed and butt hurt for 'down on his luck' Arnie - who spent double what we did to be more than half as bad.
