It's odd. I pop in here after a disappointing loss expecting goo feasting and rage and rarely find it.

Now we draw and people are laying in the boot to a team that got a result for the first time in weeks.

Monty had ice strapped to his calf second half I thought I saw

I think this shows the effect of a lack of confidence has. By the end they had nothing to lose and everything to play for and looked better for it

The cross from Fletcher was a pearler btw, as was Odo's goal. Buhaghiar showed great glimpses of what he has to come too

Still a long way to go to get back to glory days of old but it'll happen. Some experience added, a Wilko at the back, and there's hope for a moderate next season.

Realistically we should lose the next 2 but then bring on the final round derby

Took my seat said to the missus team hug mid warm up their on. She laughed.
Sun filtered through onto my back, should have gone to sleep.

Watched the most holes you will ever find in a 442 but was happy for wombat that they were playing it, just badly.

Yelled at the ref a couple times knowing the only English he probably knows is you suck.

Watched a couple of goals go in again and nothing all feeling gone.

Then saw fletcher coming on and said just what we need a slow plodger. Suck on that he would say to me as he puts a cracking cross in and GOAL! That was enough to wake everyone up. I thought how nice to see Sydney sweat then
Bang another it couldn't be was it real. The hurt to Sydney was great and our game plan in Perth was suddenly shinning through.
How could would a last minute winner be. Blocked oh well. How can we be so satisfied with a draw. I don't know but I am.
Atmosphere was back if even for only 10minutes.

Seeing Arnie grab his head in frustration was gold. Then at full time the camera man following him on yo field and him telling him to F Off was the highlight.

However we were much better with 10men in the first meeting than tonight. The lack of effort was pathetic. Physically bullied.

Ascroft is one of the few bright spots this season.

Terrific potential. Seem him settling as a DM in the Rostyn role. Needs to get fitter and work on his pace though.

Sydney let two goal lead slip to draw with Mariners:

Sydney FC remain without a win in the A-League since January 16 after letting a two-goal lead slip to bottom of the table Central Coast Mariners at Central Coast Stadium.

A win would have seen Sydney move equal with Melbourne Victory, who play Newcastle Jets tomorrow, on 33 points and with just six minutes of normal time remaining they were in cruise control.

Leading 2-0 thanks to goals from George Blackwood and Shane Smeltz, Sydney coach Graham Arnold would have been confident in taking home the three points, but late goals from Roy O'Donovan and Harry Ashcroft tied the match up meaning Sydney is without an A-League win in 64 days.

Sydney FC dominated throughout the majority of the match against a largely disjointed and ineffective Mariners.

George Blackwood opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a brilliant solo effort, collecting the ball from Mickael Tavares on the half-way line, he ran virtually unopposed until the edge of the box where he launched a curling right-foot shot into the far corner.

The Mariners could argue they should have had an equaliser in the 42nd minute when Roy O'Donovan put the ball in the net only for it to - incorrectly as replays would show - be ruled out for offside.

Sydney FC showed no mercy just three minutes later when a quick Brandon O'Neill free-kick found Shane Smeltz in open space. The New Zealand international easily cut inside before placing his shot beyond Paul Izzo to record his 89th A-League goal, putting him one behind all-time leader Archie Thompson.

It could, and probably should've been 3-0 in the 49th minute when Smeltz had a an almost empty net to aim at, however his shot was blocked on the goal-line by a diving Harry Ashcroft.

Sydney had numerous chances to add to their 2-0 lead in the second half but failed to do so, allowing the Mariners hope of a result.

In the 86th minute Brandon O'Neill, who for the most part had performed well throughout, coffed up the ball in midfield. The Mariners pounced and Matthew Fletcher delivered a perfect cross that was volleyed home by Roy O'Donovan to give Central Coast their first goal in three matches.

That goal sparked the Mariners into life as they pushed for the equaliser and it duly arrived in the 91st minute when Vedran Janjetović allowed a long distance drive from Ashcroft slip through his fingers and into the net.

Sydney FC could now be six points outside the top six by the end of the weekend, while the Mariners snap a six game losing streak that will give some hope to their fans.

Mariners' mighty comeback deals Sydney finals blow:
gettyimages-516466740.jpg

Central Coast has scored twice in the last four minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw with Sydney FC on Saturday to further dent the Sky Blues Hyundai A-League finals hopes.
The Sky Blues appeared to be cruising towards a vital three points after first half goals to George Blackwood – his first in the A-League – and Shane Smeltz had them 2-0 up at the break.

But they capitulated in the dying minutes with Roy O’Donovan pulling one back before a shocking Vedran Janjetovic error allowed Harry Ascroft to equalise in stoppage time.

The result could be a dagger blow to Sydney FC’s top six hopes, remaining two points outside the finals spots with Melbourne Victory having a chance to

GOALS

0-1 Blackwood (11’) – The Sky Blues youngster drove at the heart of the defence before cutting back onto his right foot. Blackwood was just outside the box when he got his shot away and with the aid of a slight deflection it wrong-footed keeper Paul Izzo to squeeze into the bottom corner.

0-2 Smeltz (45+1’) – Great awareness from Brandon O’Neill to take a free-kick quickly, releasing Smeltz in behind the defence with the Kiwi striker beating one defender before curling his shot past Izzo into the far corner.

1-2 – O’Donovan (86’) – Josh Rose pounced on a turnover and released Matt Fletcher on the left, with the substitutes cross finding O’Donovan at the far post and he produced a brilliant side-footed finish to beat Vedran Janjetovic.

2-2 Ascroft (90+1') – Ascroft was giving too much space on the edge of the box, allowed to turn and get a powerful shot in which slipped through the fingers of Janjetovic and into the net.

KEY MOMENT (just for 'Coach')

Early in the second half it appeared like Smeltz would add a third for Sydney when a loose ball in the box fell at his feet with Izzo out of position.

Smeltz’s strike was goal-bound but ASCROFT somehow stretched out a leg to clear the ball off the line and save the Mariners from conceding a third.

It proved crucial as the Mariners stayed in the contest and scored twice late to snatch an unlikely point.

(Rowdy: Why a Key moment ??? "Should've been 3-0 down and would NEVER have got back in the match" !!!)

OPTA DATA KEY STATS

Sydney FC has now won six straight games against the Mariners, the longest streak of any side in the history of this fixture.O’Donovan’s late goal snapped a four-game goalless streak for the Mariners and also means the Sky Blues have now gone 10 games without a clean sheet in the Hyundai A-League.

HIGHLIGHTS REEL

Blackwood’s opener showed exactly why there is so much hype around the teenage attacker.

His run was full of power and purpose, he had the awareness to cut back into the space on the edge of the box while his finish was superb.

COACH KILLER

*
The defending for Sydney’s goal on the stroke of half-time showed just why the Mariners have failed to keep a clean sheet this season. The back four switched off after conceding a free-kick just inside their own half, allowing the Sky Blues to take it quickly and immediately be through on goal. Smeltz made them pay with a brilliant finish but coach Tony Walmsley would have been furious with the ease of which his side gifted the visitors a goal.

* Sydney had three points in the bag until Janjetovic’s late howler allowed Ascroft’s shot to slip through his hands and roll into the net.

THE FINAL WORD

Central Coast gave their fans something to cheer about with their late fightback, showing they are prepared work until the end of the season, despite their position on the ladder. They head to Adelaide next to play the Reds on Easter Sunday.

The Sky Blues will see this as two points dropped after appearing to be in cruise control for all but five minutes. They have made things even harder for themselves now to make the top six with three tough matches to come, starting with a trip to Brisbane to play Roar next Saturday night.

:vhappy: Ascroft STOPS us going 3 nil down which would've utterly demoralised us with little hope of getting back in the game.

Oh, and then Harry comes up with the equaliser and leaves "Coach" to eat a shit-sandwich.

Mate, your a revelation. :vhappy:

Hey 'Coach', (I mean really- what a misnomer:rolleyes:)

Couple of match reviews from some well respected sources below.

Highlighted some interesting points for you to peruse. ;)

Lol. Gee whiz you went to alot of touble to make your arguement and still missed the point. Ashcroft IS NOT a capable defender in this league. Is was primarily responsible for both goals, asleep both times.
I don't need the opinion of your experts, i could see for myself but, if you are going to quote how about being balanced, TW was referring to Ashcroft comparing his first and second halfs, clearly he was substandard in the first! Did you miss that bit or did it not suit your argument. I'll leave you to your own little world from now on. He won't be at the back next year if we bring in a seasoned centre half, thank heavens! By the way, i had read all of it previously so didnt bother with your colouring in, but thanks anyway.

after the season we've had , i'll take that result every day, even if the 85 mins leading up to it was the usual drizzling shits...Boyo and CCHarriner goals were bonza, although i feared the cannon might have forgot what to do...I thought "Meh" when Fletch and Stell were summoned but they done alright huh?
Boyo must of been hoping he'd score one for the newest O'Donovan and to be fair I was hoping he would get one too...anyway, this may very well pump the boys up for the Delaide game , maybe it wont be the hiding to nothing I was thinking it might be......as for the Smurfs..sucked fkn in!, you'd have to believe the shed would of been a disaster zone after the final whistle.
NOW to the ref with the work visa, what a deplorable attempt at officiating, Ive been to J-League games and he apparently has never reffed one he was so far from the JLeague standard, I was praying for Ben Williams or Griffiths -Jones to mug him at half time and steal his whistle, the one event that stuck out was when he summoned the stretcher and the smurf got up and walked away , thats a yellow all day EVERYWHERE on the planet, but nothing, he was more concrened with fkn ball placement than shirt grabbing and shoulderblocks....J-League ref job swap = miserable failure

If this is the sort of response someone is going to get for posting an opinion, I can't blame them for not wanting to post opinions - or anything - after that.

Sydney fans played up badly on the train both before and after the game.

SMH has it. Someone punch a lady police officer and was arrested for it.

Classy

As for Sainsbury on Twitter he is another of the Arnie camp. Digs us at every opportunity.

Bringing the discussion back onto an even keel, I thought that we looked a little ponderous getting forward. A lot of the time it was because we were missing good runs because releases were held up too long or passes were misdirected.

I thought the defensive structure was OK. Blackwood's goal was from him not being closed down at 6, not 3/4 (so I'm letting Ascroft off for that one) and Smeltz's goal was from a little bit of immaturity and inexperience - get in shape and *then* argue the call...

But Izzo had a belter of a game, and Neill and L.Rose were pretty tidy most of the time. I think J.Rose looked more disciplined than Austin at 11, but sacrificed a little bit of speed. But he is reasonable on the ball.

Fab looked frustrated most of the day; he tried too hard on the ball to do the 'special' things, shot when he should've passed and he *often* overran when a pass didn't come.

Bingers was great but unrewarded, and Roy was simply outstanding. I can't remember if he's contracted next year but I really hope he is!

The big thing though is that the team and the crowd didn't give up. At half time we could've shut up shop and played to not get thrashed. Given the last few weeks I could've forgiven that, but they kept banging away.

In spite of persistent fouling (side note - how did L.Rose get a card for persistent fouling but no Sydney player did?) we kept getting stuck in and much more so than recent weeks we attacked - 19 shots (8 on target / 8 off target / 3 blocked) to 13 (3/5/5).

When the first goal came, it felt well-deserved, and we deserved the equaliser because we went up another gear.

On Sainsbury's comments, he really needs to understand the context of the season, and even the game. The Sydney forum even has an 'Amazing Scenes' thread where they record all of their late comebacks to rescue points or wins from behind.

Coming back to snatch a draw from 2-0 behind is enjoyable at any time; coming back to snatch a draw when we haven't scored in three games and had lost the last six on the spin is the stuff of ecstacy.

Of course it's disappointing that that's the state of our season, but moaning about it won't change it and we're not going to not enjoy the little things just because the big things have stunk.
