. this has helped me see how one-eyed i have been in my support ... i know we have lacked cohesion ... and although it is not a suitable excuse it did offer some concessions to the team in my mind

. but that effort from sim shows that i (and many others) have been far too generous with those concessions. to me, he didn't stand out in the kiddies game last week ... but that was an impressive debut - well done matt sim! keep it up
Matt sim played like a player getting his first but final chance to make it in the big show. He put everything into that game and was one of the best performers

Anybody thinking about not renewing because of a couple of bad matches can bugger off. People leaving because of poor performance can bugger off. Why bother going in the first place if you're gonna act dour and leave ten minutes early?

Shit, maybe I'm just bitter I can't get to games since moving to Melbourne, but the Mariners mean more to me than a club winning some trophies or playing some nice football.

With Rosey's recent performances being less than impressive and Moss' need to shake things up to try to get some results, I am all for Sim getting the starting gig at left back.

I laughed a little when I read the "I'm not willing to make 3hr round trips to watch that" bit. I've been doing it for 9 years (last night was closer to 4hrs because of the ridiculous traffic on the way up - barely got out of first gear until the Harbour Tunnel, came to a dead stop on each of the ED, Gore Hill, M2, F3...).

I laughed more when I read the "I won't renew if the Mariners don't meet my expectations" bit, citing the club's need to show grit, hard work, determination and spirit.

How about the so-called supporters show a bit of grit or a bit of spirit.

If you're not willing to show up for the club on difficult nights, why should you expect the players to be any different? We expect them to step up and show some pride, but if we've got none then they're just here to do a job and go home.

When we say supporters make the club, we don't just mean that the club should thank us when we sing our arses off in the stands and travel across the country for them. We also mean that the supporters hang tough and stand tall even when the players can't.

There's more to following a football team than sexy football and trophies. If you're looking for a way out of this then you can't claim to be any better than the players and coach you're abandoning.

I know what I find more hilarious about your post
Criticising a fellow mariners hardcore fan...
Or that such an intelligent individual such as yourself would misquote with regards to "sexy football and winning trophies" (of which I never said was a prerequisite).
But hey...why not use anything you can to make your point?

You know I do think well of you dibo. Sure I think you are a bit harsh towards others on this forum...
But I am happy to admit that when I read your posts, I can appreciate the level of intellect behind them.
Sure I don't agree with your support of Hutchinson over Montgomery...but that's for another day.
In particular I really really loved your post last week in regards to a possible minor alteration in our formation; pulling our AM back, and pushing our wingers forward (still a a 4-2-3-1, but it could be seen as a 4-2-1-3). Brilliant stuff, and I agree that it's better than our current formation or our infamous diamond 442!

But, back on topic.
I have attended every home game this season.
Even when we got dominated by brisbane (1-0 loss), or 2 poor performances against Victory, the boring 0-0 with heart etc.

And I was devastated to lose Arnold, mcglinchey and Clarke...in my opinion 3 of our clubs biggest assets (if not the top 3 assets).

But I stuck through it.
Been to every game...
Been a keyboard warrior across 2 different football sites (roar, and 442) defending our boys in yellow!

I have bought a membership for 6 seasons straight... And yes there are people who are foundation members, and my hat goes off to them...a fantastic achievement far greater than my own!

I haven't missed a game since February 4th, 2012 two days before I came back from Egypt.
In fact during my trip to Egypt I remember going to a little Internet cafe in the middle of Cairo at 10:30am in the morning and using my broken arabic (I have the vocabulary of a 4 year old) for permission to use the Internet.
It was that game at Suncorp stadium, the one where theo passed it to Amini...and Amini scored off the underside of the crossbar...
I remember going crazy after that goal...and getting weird looks from everyone inside the room!

I remember being one of the few thousand fans who travelled all the way to brisbane with my two younger sisters and mother...
I remember the first goal, what an amazing feeling.
And the 2nd goal... Pure ecstasy!
I was in the middle of a bay full of brisbanites...and I took off my shirt and waved it around like a madman.
And I remember the heartache that followed!!!
But our boys kept their strong spirit throughout. And they could no wrong in my eyes!

I am not saying I am the biggest mariners fan ever...but I'm no fair weather supporter!

And I think I've done my part...
I think I've shown plenty of grit and determination! Plenty of spirit.

And if our boys can't make that type of effort than I can't afford to make sacrifices just to watch them play!

Hey, if I was earning 50k a year...I would happily fork out money for membership without even batting an eyelid

But I don't...

also Duke was struggling up top on his own, he is not fast enough to be a lone striker, but he did make some good runs.

You do realise duke is probably the 2nd fastest in our squad?
Fastest is bernie...
And it's between rosey and duke for 2nd?

And you do realise that duke is the probably 2nd fastest mariners striker in history?
Slow (in comparison): kwasnik, mrsja, Mori, sterj, petrovski, Mcallister, mcbreen, Simon, hutch (8 years ago), Petrie
Fast: bernie, duke, hearfield
Am I forgetting anyone?

And in the competition what strikers are faster?
Jeronimo might have quicker acceleration?
And maybe David Williams or mifsud are faster...
Maybe taggart? I haven't watched him play.
It would be a small list of strikers who are faster IMO

I think the problem is timing and anticipation for Duke.
As well as the players behind him...
But I know he has pace to burn!

I'd add that his first touch quite often lets him down. He could of been in behind once or twice last night but for poor first touch.

This!
A small, financially struggling club needs each and every one of us. From the people who attend one or two games a year to the guys who turn up every home game.
We're all in this together and if we don't stick by the club who will?

Doesn't mean we have to accept sub standard performances, we can bitch and moan all we want, but when the going gets tough these colours don't run.

+1

When the boys need us most , everyone thinks it's time to piss off ?

Show some spirit !

my main concern was the lack of the renowned mariners fighting spirit I'm so used to.
has to be the first thing to come back

This! Disregarding the discussion around Real and Arsenal, is where I agree with Kareem
In fact, as has been discussed here before, I follow this club, probably more for the location and spirit than for the footballing qualities. As a result, while it hurts, a loss doesn't particularly diminish my willingness to watch them play... But the lack of spirit and seeming unwillingness to work for each other could. I have liked watching a team who, in most cases, were just as happy to assist a goal as they were to score it and so, was always happy to work for each other's success. This is one of the reasons why I like Hutch and Matty S. Last night, I thought Hutch looked like he did all that he could to light a fire under the boys, in vain obviously.
But Shit like watching the ball go in, appealing for a non-existant off-side, is just a waste of time, mine and theirs... Fix it boys!

I agree. I really hoped that with time, Duke's touch would improve. Sadly it hasn't. A pity.
I think his first touch actually was starting to improve all last season.
Obviously as mentioned by dozens of fans he has been affected big time by playing out of position!
He was doing well in the league, he was making progress with the national team, he loomed as a squad bolted for the WC and then Arnold tried him out on the wing.
I'll admit I had suggested 6-12 months earlier the idea of trying duke out wide.
He was hard working, had pace and was young.
Also it worked for bernie!
It was worth a try, especially considering that we had too many strikers and not enough wingers...

But I think everyone can agree it was a mistake...he was too far from goal and he didn't seem to fully understand his role.
Especially in a 4-4-1-1 formation
I would rather try pushing our wingers further forward (4-2-1-3) and see how dukey does in that role.

But nevertheless, his confidence has been shattered.
I think his World Cup dreams are very unlikely (2018 is a better goal).
And losing confidence can ruin players careers...
Or sometimes they snap out of it.
The best thing duke has going for him is an insane level of will power!
But Maybe it works against him at times...

Perhaps he just needs to start afresh next season...

Rojas had a dip in form, so did kruse, so have a lot of youngsters...

:goodpost:

I can barely afford a membership, I have to go back to uni and study, as well as support my growing family.
Ah. Life's decisions. It must be tough to be young. :innocent: ;)
When I was a kid we used to live in a shoe box in t'middle of t'road...but I am still, to use a delicious expression by Recky...Marinoid!(Or perhaps I am Marin-roy-ed?)
I am a penniless pensioner living on the other side of the world; I miss seeing my Mariners like you wouldn't believe. I am not a member because it doesn't make any sense to spend the money when I simply can't get to games; although I love to watch Real Madrid I am happy to pay my life time dues watching the mighty AFC Wimbledon: their story of triumph and disaster and triumph again is far better than that of any of the easy to follow big knobs.

On our players -
Reddy's slow deliberate distribution is becoming a Vukovic bad dream.
Anderson is piss weak, built like a monster but without the aggression; I doubt Ognenovski would have waved his foot at the attackers (in our last two games) and not made physical contact. CBs are there to hurt people, to intimidate.
Bosnar is all talk and no action; reads the game poorly, one dimensional in distribution. A real disappointment,
Bernie, as someone had pointed out elsewhere, seems to think that once he has scored his job is done. Needs to toughen up mentally.
Duke, on the other hand, needs more game time, needs to rebuild his confidence. He is not playing at all well but I would persevere with him.
Caceres: must play. When he came on he was inventive; play him on the wing if need be, in a WeeMac role. He and Kim as our WeeMac and Flores could work.
Kim: like what I saw, loved the smile, enjoyed the skill.
Sim: loved the attitude
Hutcho: it was a captain's knock; the spirit is still alive
