Matt sim played like a player getting his first but final chance to make it in the big show. He put everything into that game and was one of the best performers

. maybe a few others need to contemplate their next chance could be their last ... if that is the inspiration that is needed. incidentally hutch seemed to have a pretty good game after starting on the bench last week ... coincidence?

Christ that was hard to watch! Given the amount of changes this season I'm not surprised the team is struggling but that was rubbish. What pisses me off is that so many changes were "allowed" to happen to the team in such a short time. A bit more focus on succession planning wouldn't hurt( team and staff)! Any organisation that makes wholesale changes like the Mariners have this season is bound for a rough ride initially. I just hope they can sort it out before the season ends.

In my opinion Bosnar is useless I don't rate him and believe he needs to go. How many more wasted free kicks are they going to grant this guy? ( Did he sneak in under the no ego/dickheads radar?)

Mossy's a great guy but he doesn't have the vision, experience nor the edge that Arnie has ( we were spoilt having Arnie). Perhaps PM would be better as the assistant ( mates with all the boys) and another quality manager take on the top role.

Anybody thinking about not renewing because of a couple of bad matches can bugger off. People leaving because of poor performance can bugger off. Why bother going in the first place if you're gonna act dour and leave ten minutes early?

Because I've paid my money and I'll do what I like, including leaving early if I choose to. If you don't like i don't care in the slightest. Love how some people think they have the right to tell others what they should or shouldn't do.

As I mentioned it's the first time in 9 seasons that I've left early. Might tell you something about the performance.

"We have to bounce back and we have to do it quickly,"
declared a straight-talking Moss after the game.
"The trip to Korea (for the AFC Champions League
clash) is probably good timing in that we can get away
from Australia and we can get together in a camp
situation which allows us to spend a lot more time on
the video.
"Maybe there will be some one-on-one meetings where
some home truths will be told.
"At half-time I was very happy with the way we played
in the first half, a great goal from Bernie (Ibini) and we
challenged ourselves at half-time to put two good
halves of football together for probably the first time
this season and that was the end result.
"I'm not going to hide from the fact this it's not good
enough from us, we have to be better individually,
collectively and we can't drop our bundle when we
concede a goal.
"That's the third week now in a row where we have
copped a goal within a minute of half-time," Moss
added.
"Two weeks in a row we coped one just before half-time
(against Melbourne Victory then Adelaide), this week it
was just after.
"We are the masters of our own undoing by giving away
cheap ball, defending our box poorly and just not
enough desperation and not enough purpose with the
ball in the second half."
"Behind those walls I will be letting those my players
know that is not good enough in the second half."

Further to my comment about Anderson/ Ognenovski - I have just seen the Ogmonster clear the ball while slamming David Carney in the back with his knee and head butting him all in the one movement :overheadl: All perfectly legal.

That's what defending is all about.

Only Sim played like a proper defender. Storm was on a walkabout and Ando and Bosnar tackle like girls. Closing down or putting pressure on the opposition appears to be unheard of.

I was in the prawn sandwich section but after 3.1 decided to join some friends at the back of bay 17 so probably looked like I was walking out.
Funny thing a couple of my friends in bay 17 walked out after the fourth goal as they were seething.

Ok I just watched it on the box. We were not terrible but simply defend like a team of kids.

The right back thinks he is a striker.

The centre backs are very poor.....they are soft, they can't tackle, especially Ando and the simply stand there instead of closing down.

Where the f**k are these prawn sandwiches? I'd rather eat cardboard than any of the food at the stadium..

Reddy 4. His worst game of the year. I'm sure Pasfield would have saved at least one of those.
Sim 7. Great debut. Not as good at some our saying but showed guts and more positional sence than the rest of the back 4. A tad agricultural at times and for mine I'd still start Rose but promising player.
Bosnar 4. Soft. totally to blame for the second goal. long passing woeful. BUT Hidden under the lazy soft European softcock effort is a decent player once he adjusts to HAL.
Ando 4. Very weak challenge on the 3rd goal and MIA on the 4th as was unsteady Eddy and Drizzle. Needs a spell.
storm 5. Clearly has quality but is very sloppy defensively and I was very pissed off to see him leave a player completely unmarked and walking back as we conceded the second goal. Track back you mug!
Sterj 6. Some good balls early on but shocker of a penalty, shocker of a header. Needs a spell.
Hutcho 7. Probably his best game of the season. Allowed us to dominate the first half by actually attacking from the midfield.
Monty 7. Usual mixed bag Brilliant work rate and some lovely through balls but still a few errors.
Bernie 6.5 . Fantastic goal but did very little in the second half.
Duke 6. Great work rate and did some really good stuff. First touch lets him down but if our defence had his ticker we wouldn't get humiliated every week.
Kim 6.5. Nice player with great vision. Looked unfit but showed enough to be a great prospect.

Almost impossible to pick a MOM.

Bernie....great first 45.
Kim...great first 45.
Sim....very solid debut.
Monty and Hutch......decent.

Overall we were shit again.

I think a lot of people were seething but I don't follow my team by walking out. That said I can understand the frustration people were feeling and as many people say - they pay for their seat they can do what they want.

Over the last 3 years we were built on defence. We didn't have prolific strikers like Berisha or Smeltz. Last year when Macca hit his purple patch it was just icing on the cake. Clearly the loss of Patrick and Sainsbury has had major effect. I think it is time to bite the bullet, put a rocket up the team (and any other metaphor you want to throw in) and try something different. A couple of weeks ago some-one suggested Monty at CB. I honestly don't think he could do a worse job than Anderson or Bosnar.

We've shipped 11 goals in 4 games and the perception held by many, including me. is the fighting spirit is not there.

What about a back 4 of Seip, Monty, Brent and Sim

Screeners in front of Caceres and Hutch

Lets see what Kim can do as number 10 and play Bernie and Rose as wingers in from of him with Duke in the middle

I believe that back four would be more solid, Caceres would be playing in his natural deep lying playmaker role, Rose, Bernie and Duke can press and hopefully force some hoofball from the opposition rather than us.

There was nothing wrong with Duke. If you play a lone striker against Durante and Sigmund, odds are, he will get completely monstered. I don't think Mossy allowed for this at all in his game plan with Duke. One of the best pairings and most long standing in the league. A key reason the nix are never an easy win.

Random thoughts...

Sim was awesome.
Play Rose as Left CB, Sim as LB or even Rose LB, and Sim LM - he was practically LM anyway.
We need a front two.
We need to close down.
We need to stay switched on.
Try Fitz as AM. At least he has a terrific work rate.
Bernie needs to play for 90.
I think Griffiths or Seip should come in for Bosnar.
Keep investing in youth/giving wee slater and Trifiro more chances off the bench.

. interesting discussion regarding zach ... and reminds me of my early impressions of him:
  • he is a genuinely nice guy to talk to ... this nice guy persona seems to carry through onto the pitch - we need a little more aggression from him
  • i still get this feeling that his whole life he has been a foot taller, a foot wider and 10-20kg heavier than the other 'kids'. it is as if he doesn't want to risk hurting anyone - and he may have even been coached that way when younger (maybe an injury to himself or someone else has messed with his head)
  • he needs to realise he isn't playing against kids any more ... get in behind the ball and throw your weight around
. zach, you don't need to be loved by your opposition, you need to be feared. but don't worry we will love you more for it ... and you can still be nice to your fans

On our players -
Reddy's slow deliberate distribution is becoming a Vukovic bad dream.
Anderson is piss weak, built like a monster but without the aggression; I doubt Ognenovski would have waved his foot at the attackers (in our last two games) and not made physical contact. CBs are there to hurt people, to intimidate.
Bosnar is all talk and no action; reads the game poorly, one dimensional in distribution. A real disappointment,
Bernie, as someone had pointed out elsewhere, seems to think that once he has scored his job is done. Needs to toughen up mentally.
Duke, on the other hand, needs more game time, needs to rebuild his confidence. He is not playing at all well but I would persevere with him.
Caceres: must play. When he came on he was inventive; play him on the wing if need be, in a WeeMac role. He and Kim as our WeeMac and Flores could work.
Kim: like what I saw, loved the smile, enjoyed the skill.
Sim: loved the attitude
Hutcho: it was a captain's knock; the spirit is still alive

. well written as usual roy ... i have been wanting to do a player-player critique for some time (with a broader scope than just the game under discussion). you have done it better and with far fewer words than i could - thanks.

. but i may still follow through with a piece to bore you all at some point :p

. i think the thing that has impressed people most was that he seemed to be able to do what other, more experienced players couldn't do ... simply: the task they were assigned to do - and do it for the full 90 minutes (i believe he was 'out of season' too)

. by no means was he perfect ... but in that performance i thought he stood out - maybe it was because of things others didn't do rather than things he did ... but a standout debut nonetheless
