TB's line up is what I think we will play IF we stick with 4231, (Though I switched Seip and Anderson, as Seip has been very clear that he's best on the left and Ando I'm less sure on) I agree TS is better as a CB. But I'm not 100% he will play there still, as he's also come along way since his first struggles at RB, and showed some definite improvements in the position when he stepped in there last season.

But back to the squad. As soon as we signed Flores, I started playing around, and there are just so many great possibilities for formations I just confused myself.
Just look at the genuine potential starting players that are not on the field in that lineup...Simon, McBreen, Sterj... and you get a serious sense of our depth. This more than anything bodes well for the ACL.

I agree on the Hutch comments. Clearly "the glue" last season. Another point is that the first year we had Hutch as captain, is also the year we went all the way. A team needs some grit to centre around. ANd while I love Wilko. Hutch was the leadership grit that under Wilko we never had. Anyhow, Hutch and Monty combo is the reason I think we will most likely play a 4231 again... otherwise the 442 below would be my preference...

442

------------------Pasfield-----------
Sainsbury---Anderson--Marcel Seip---Rose
--------------Monty/Hutch-----------
Weemac---------------------------Fitzy

Some other possibilities...

I really wish the HAL would increase it's number allowed on the bench too.
Gives the coach more power to change a game/respond to what's needed. Unties his hand to be able to experiment more.
Makes it more exciting for fans! If they can't get a run, I want to see Caceres and Slater on the bench...
wtf were u smoking when thought about playing rose @ right mid

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
I'm still not convinced about Matt Simon being brought back...I hear tell he has a REAL crook wheel

i think he'll be great at full fitness. combined with the refined skills of the likes of Flores and Weemac his power, energy and harassment of the oppositions defence will wear them out and create holes. terrified defences will line up against the mariners this season

Arnie is going to really enjoy playing with his options this pre-season

i was excited about the prospects of last season - it has nothing on the potential of this team. can't wait

And even if he's not fully fit, bring him on at 70 after Macca, Dukey & Flower have run the defences ragged. Monstrous!

Past his best?
And Pasfield better?

Are you joking?

Sure he never reached his potential...but he is still in his (somewhat disappointing after all the hype) prime ...
I never joke :innocent:
Danny was a folk hero during his time with us but that tantrum in the GF was the pinnacle of his career. And as Bikini says he can't kick for toffee.

. by 'not fully fit' i assume you mean 'not match fit'?

. if he is not fit - as in he has not overcome his injury (which i understand is the issue) ... we must keep him away from all competitive football

what im expecting to see come round 1

-----------------Pasfield-------------------
Storm --- Sainsbury --- Seip ---- Rose
-----------Monty------Hutch-------------
WeeMac---------Flores--------------Fitz
-------------------Duke--------------------

Caceres - will only get game time if Flores/Hutch/Monty is injured or suspended
Simon - a long term project... physically and mentally
Seip - may not get the nod over Anderson and may only cement a spot if sainsbury leaves
Mcbreen - will be warn out or injured when he gets back and will need half the season to break into the team, from the bench
Kwas - total wild card, may not see him at all, may score the championship winning goal
Serj - will interchange with Fitzgerald based on who has form
Morton, Griffith, Slater, Neill will only see game time when injuries and suspensions strike

Correct. If he's not fit to play I wouldn't expect to see him at all. Hopefully this won't be the case.
I assumed that if the club didn't think that he would be able to play at some stage this season then he wouldn't have got a contract. We can't afford to be a charity, no matter how well liked the guy is.

100% this. I love Matty Simon and would love to see him play again, but if his knee is ruined and he won't return to how good he was before then he is a wasted spot that could be given to a young player just as good but at the start of his career

Yea, his kicking is suspect...

But to suggest he isn't in his prime...that's just wrong

He was invited to Fulham to trial this year, and has been solid at glory...not spectacular...but error free
Danny has never played this good...

You may be getting mislead by the lack of hype...

Danny was destined for greater things
But whilst he didn't get reach those heights he has certainly improved majority of aspects (kicking aside)

Hence why I asked if you were joking
Because your statement just wasn't logical

So Kareem, my dear chap, here's the drum. From the moment Danny Vukovic lost his rag in the GF against the Jets his career went backwards. He missed out on the Olympics and therefore any chance of being in the international spotlight. He went off to Turkey and was sent home pretty sharpish. His tail between his legs he ended up on loan to Welly. He finally got his career back on track when he joined Perth Glory who have now said he is 'free to talk to other clubs'. His recent venture to Europe does not appear to have earned him a contract.
He was decent at Perth but not error free. I would venture to say that had he been able to enjoy the full attention of John Crawley's expert coaching he would have fulfilled his potential with the Mariners and quite possibly the Socceroos. These days he is not even rated among the leading keepers in the A league. Has he even looked like making any of Holger's A League training squads? How many votes did he receive for the All-Stars?
Pasfield's full potential has yet to be seen but he has had the benefit of Crawley's expertise and did well enough in the handful of games he played last year to show he has improved significantly. I doubt the Mariners would be putting their faith in him if he wasn't up to it.
I have no personal axe to grind with him, he remains a favourite Mariner of mine, but it is my opinion Vukovic is not as good today as he was when he played for the Mariners

The simple fact is that Danny is a good HAL level keeper. He had a quite reasonable year last season. Would he be an automatic first choice - no. Would I prefer him to Bradesevic - yes. Would I prefer him to Velaphi - yes. Would I prefer him to Reddy - definitely.

Arnie has put together a squad that has decent covers for all outfield positions. If Justin gets injured or loses form we need someone that is able to come in and perform at a top level. We should not skimp on what is arguably the most important position. Whether the answer is Danny or someone else I don't know. However, he seems to be the best of the people so far mentioned.
