It's up to you how you participate in the community!

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

The experience and depth of Sydney FC told as they haulted the audacious drive of the young Central Coast Mariners for the Premiership, ending 1-0 victors at Bluetongue Stadium through a 35th minute forced goal by Leena Khamis.

Brisbane Roar returned to winning form with a comprehensive 6-0 demolition of Newcastle Jets to confirm a finals berth, and Canberra United winners at home over Adelaide snuck into the finals again, edging Melbourne Victory for fourth place on goal difference after the Melburnians suffered a loss to Perth Glory.

The semi-finals will be played on Saturday (3pm, and TV) with Sydney hosting Canberra at Cronulla, and Sunday (3pm) with Central Coast hosting Brisbane at Gosford.

I went along yesterday for a sticky-beak. The main reason for my attendance was to add to the crowd number to show that any team calling themselves the Central Coast Mariners belongs on the Central Coast. This is their home, this is where they should be based and this is where they should play their home games. It was also a chance to see some football. It was Us vs Them, so regardless of the standard of football, I always want Us to whip their arses.

Some observations form a first timer to women's football. Remember that these comments come from a fat bloke sitting in the stands, used to watching the A-league and the occasional Youth game. Firstly, I'd describe what I saw yesterday as "cute". Yes, I know that sounds condescending but it was like the game was on morphine. Everything happened at a much slower pace. The heat played a part in that, but the pace in general was noticeably slower than the men (I guess you dont have to be Einstein to come to that conclusion). At least you can see the build up happening more easily than in the mens game. The down side is that one can be more critical of a player's poor decisions and bad passes.

Another thing that struck me was that several players looked as though they had the skills of a Maradonna. They'd run straight though two defenders and come out the other side still in possession of the ball. It is, unfortunately, a reflection of the poor tackleing rather than the sublime ball skill of the attacking player.

I have to give the ladies a big thumbs up for their commitment. It was a pretty fiesty game and they showed no fear of their opponents. Unfortunately, Sydney were more desparate to win the ball, especially in the air and their forwards looked very classy and had an extra yard or two in speed. Some good saves from our goalie kept us in the game.

There were some absolutely cracking shots from outside the box in the first half by our team. A couple were unlucky not to go in. There were some standouts, but I dont know who they are. That big forward of ours (Heyman is it?) is a handful. Big, fast and aggressive. The blonde that started on the right wing and the #19 midfielder also stood out for me.

All in all, an enjoyable afternoon and at $5, good value for money. Get them playing in the Mariners strip and schedule them to play either with Youth or the main event and I'm sure more people will become interested in their fortunes in the future.

Next Sunday @ 3pm is a semi against Brisbane. Get out and support the Mariners.

Heyman is a gun; the W League Matty Simon. Once you have made the adjustment to the women's game from the men's then you appreciate some good football and genuine effort. The team is a credit to the Mariners and I do hope that the Centre of Excellence comes soon and we can watch this team on a regular basis at HOME.

Good work rate and not bad on the eye either!!! ;)

I'm actually enjoying watching some of their games this season. There is a marked difference between womens and mens leagues as said before. But these girls can knock the ball around quite well.

Speaking of Heyman:

http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/heyman-wins-wleague-player-of-the-year-20091207-keuz.html

Heyman wins W-League player of the year

Central Coast's Michelle Heyman has claimed the W-League player of the year and golden boot awards at a ceremony in Sydney.

Heyman scored 11 goals during the season, including a hat-trick in round three.

Perth Glory's Samantha Kerr was voted players' player of the year and she also took home the goal of the year for her long-range effort in round eight.

Jillian Loyden of Central Coast Mariners was named goalkeeper of the year.

The young player of the year award was split between Brisbane Roar's Elise Kellond-Knight and Canberra United's Ellyse Perry.

"The W-League has continued this season to showcase the fine footballing talents of some of our most exciting female athletes," said FFA chief executive Ben Buckley.

"This season has seen the W-League build on its place in the Australian sporting culture and shows the potential for elite female competition in Australia to continue to develop at a professional level."

It is a pity that they didn't win the Premiership :( The ref was horrible. Cards to every Mariner it seemed!!

But will definitely be there to cheer them on during the Semi's!!

Well done to the girls.

Semi 3pm on Sunday at the stadium versus Brisbane. I will be there.

Would've been nice if they could've scheduled it before Yoof n 1st team games on Sat. Sure they would've got a fair few more people there to watch the womens semi than usual if all 3 games were on for a big day of Mariners football!! I dream of the day I can go and watch all our Mariners teams playing one after the other ;D Highly doubt it'll ever come to fruition though!! :'(

if we won the game last weekend it would have been scheduled before the youth game at 3pm

again, television rights wins out over scheduling with the ABC wanting the premiers to play on the Saturday

this has has been scheduled many months in advance

Great news for Michelle Heyman and for the club; also awards for goalkeeper and coach - that's brilliant. Nothing but good things to come from this team.

This will be good game. Both teams have good poaching strikers and BR were the benchmark coming into the season. BR have a few Matildas in their ranks and went from first to  third over the season so maybe there will be some contested rep positions to be selected (including our own Michelle Heymen) that will liven this game up. Butt and Beutel are sharpe for BR and are pretty solid at the back.
