So, if the girls win on Friday against Newcastle they will be the Premiers? That would be a fantastic achievement.

Yep, next weekend watch our girls kill off Sydney, then several hours of refreshments in the CCLC before the HAL game on the big screen at 9pm.
W-L is the TV game, which is why they'll fry at 3pm.

This week however we host the Jest:

The W-League might be just two too-short seasons old, but its stacking up some serious milestones and proving itself short, sweet, and suspenseful.

There are five teams competing for four finals spots, with even the order of the top four still up for grabs in this, the leagues final round.

The Central Coast Mariners, replete with lead golden boot contender Michelle Heyman, will be looking to stave off an onslaught for the top spot and the Premiership from strong finishers Sydney, who leapfrogged their way into second after round nine.

Fourth-placed Melbourne Victory will be aiming to hold onto their spot as they take on a Perth Glory team strengthened by the recent arrival of Katie Gill, while fifth-placed Canberra United will be vying to overtake Melbourne with a win against an ostensibly easier opponent (although dont tell Roar Women that) in Adelaide United.

Add in some will-they-wont-they be able to rebuild their confidence suspense as the once-undefeatable Roar try to rectify their recently-derailed dominance and what we have is at least five - if not eight - teams playing for, well, sheep stations.

Ive long bemoaned the dearth of womens football in Australia, both in length of season at just 10 weeks plus finals and in visibility, with just one match broadcast each week during the snippet of a season. But what the W-League season lacks in length its certainly making up for in suspense.

Unlike the A-League, where theres now daylight visible between Melbourne and the rest of the league and plenty more rounds for them to extend that on-the-way-to-claiming-the-toilet-seat-again gap, the W-Leagues table is congested and the teams have just one more game with which to secure their spots.

As a result, round 10 is likely to be as knife-edge as a grand final. Add in some milestones that teams and players will potentially reach, and the final round of season two is proving to be must-see.

With 11 goals to date [this season] compared with 13 [2 seasons] for last seasons golden boot Leena Khamis, prime golden boot contender Michelle Heyman will be looking to become the leagues top goalscorer.

Averaging more than a goal a game, Heyman is on track to achieve it, but Khamis will be putting up a goalscoring fight in round 10. Literally. As Heymans Central Coast are playing Khamis Sydney.

Also looking to record a milestonealthough primarily a winwill be the Roar Women, who need to score just two goals to notch up a total of 50 goals since the W-Leagues inception. Their round nine loss saw them break their record 18-match undefeated streak and slip out of the top two for the first time in the W-Leagues history.

Whether they can reclaim second spot will depend largely on the outcome of the Central Coast v Sydney intrastate tussle which is, rather conveniently, being broadcast live and exclusive on ABC1 at 3pm on Saturday.

Indeed, short, sweet, suspenseful, and with sheep stations at stake, round 10 will be the W-Leagues grand final before the grand final.

I was present to watch the ladies win their first match of the season down at SFS, and I'll be present to watch their last match of the regular season on Saturday. It should be an absolute ripper with the lasses hopefully doing what the lads can't do, that is beat FC twice in the same year.
This could be the first premiership of three this season!!!

CENTRAL Coast Mariners will be without two key players in Saturday's winner-takes-all W-League premiership decider against Sydney FC in Gosford.

Two points clear of Sydney going into the final round, the Mariners will be without the services of suspended captain Caitlin Cooper and injured key midfielder Kelly Golebiowski.

Although not fielding a single current Matilda within their ranks, the Mariners have been a model of consistency to be within touching distance of finishing the regular-season ahead of the star-studded Sydney FC and Brisbane Roar.

Despite the lack of big names the Mariners do possess the league's top-scorer in Michelle Heyman, with the former Sydney FC striker returning a remarkable 11 goals in nine matches.

"We will go out and play an attacking style and be attack-minded as we have done all year," said Mariners coach Stephen Roche.

"I think the girls are confident, they really want it and perhaps have something to prove."

Sydney FC will go into the match full of confidence on the back of an eight-match unbeaten run, though that defeat was a 3-1 opening-round loss at the hands of the Mariners.

Despite that loss Blues skipper Heather Garriock remains confident of claiming all three points at Bluetongue Stadium.

"We have been going very well in the last few games and are pretty happy with how the attacking side of things have been going," said the experienced flanker.

"Scoring 11 goals in the last two games has definitely built lots of confidence in the team.

"A big factor in the first round match was that we didn't really know each other's games that well, but since then we have jelled really well together which has been evident."

Regardless of the outcome the Mariners are assured of a top-two berth and a home semi-final, while a draw or loss could see Sydney pipped for second by Brisbane Roar.

Reigning champions Brisbane face cellar-dwellers Newcastle Jets but have stuttered in recent rounds, and last week suffered a 2-1 defeat against Perth Glory, their first loss in 18 matches.

Melbourne Victory are in the box seat to claim the remaining finals berth requiring just a point in Perth, while last season's runners-up Canberra United need to claim maximum points against Adelaide United and hope the Victory slip-up.
