This popped up on my Google Alerts this morning. It has an interesting US view of the W-League.

Yes it was quite interesting ... the date of the article is deceptive though, as Bonnie has been gone for 3-4 months and no information has yet been forthcoming on the WL from FFA (world cup, HAL6, and the bid obviously the priorities)

Just on ABC24. FNSW funding withdrawn and will not continue in W-League.  Official from ffa spokesperson.

How much was the funding required, and how much will it cost a local business (like Bluetongue, for example) to have them going?

They said FNSW funding was 150k. A drop in the ocean compared to the $ millions required for an A-League club.

I've asked this previously. What the hell happened to the government funding provided to assist the wleague and pay for the abc telecast? And when are the ffa going to assume anything in Australian football not called aleague, is worthy of a their attention?

The $'s spent propping up the clubs whose owners have walked away without default, could fully fund the wleague for a decade. Sorry, but there's two levels of football in Australia, those that don't count and the Aleague.

ABC just said the Mariners wleague people went to the FFA for assistance when fnsw funding decision was known and the FFA decided to pull the plug. The ffa spokesperson said it was a business decision to do so.

edit
The Matildas coach stated his displeasure with the decision and the improbability the girls can gain spots with other teams. Lack of ability to move interstate because of the subsistence wages paid, being one reason and not enough places available being another.

Weren't there supposed to be a funding shift this season away from the federations and towards the club?

Perhaps FNSW and the FFA are not to blame?

SYDNEY
29 July 2010

Football Federation Australia (FFA) can today announce the Westfield W-League 2010/11 Season will kick-off on November 5 in a revamped 10-Round competition concluding in the Westfield W-League 2011 Finals Series in February.

Westfield W-League 2010/11 Season will see seven (7) teams from across Australia compete in the third edition of the competition with Adelaide United, Brisbane Roar, Canberra United, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, Perth Glory and Sydney FC will all again enter teams.

Central Coast Mariners will not enter a team in the competition for this season.

"A new season presents new challenges to what is fast becoming the prominent, elite pathway for women footballers in Australia," said FFA Head of Women's Football
Leeanne Grantham.

"We are disappointed that Football NSW and the Central Coast Mariners will be unable to register a team for season three of the Westfield W-League.

"Due to significant financial impediments and to maintain a sustainable, professional
and high-quality competition the Westfield W-League will, this season, revert to a
seven-team competition that will showcase Australia's best female footballing talent.

"The Westfield W-League is an elite pathway for female athletes in Australia which was witnessed by millions of Australians following the success of the Westfield Matildas at this year's AFC Women's Asian Cup.

"Newcastle Jets through the fantastic effort of the Northern NSW Football Federation will continue to represent football on the NSW coast together with Sydney FC, NSW based female footballers will continue to have the benefit of an elite pathway into the Westfield Matildas."

Last season's Westfield W-League unearthed five rising talents who all made their
Westfield Matildas debut in 2010 with 16-year-olds Sam Kerr (Perth Glory), Teigen Allen (Sydney FC) and Emily Van Egmond (Canberra United) along with two players, Michelle Heyman and Aivi Luik, who made their first appearances for an Australian National team after hugely successful season's in the Westfield W-League.

With the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 on the horizon for the Westfield Matildas a
successful Westfield W-League 2010/11 Season will see even more talent surface and see the continued rapid growth in participation of women's football in Australia.

Love the contempt they show for the Central Coast in trying to justify the decision.

It's obvious the FFA with bathe in the glory of any Matildas success, sing loud it's wondrous achievements in the provision of a national competition and with a vigorous twist of spin, passionately insist how important to them the women's game in Australia is.

The reality being, they're very poor spin doctors, but spin doctors nevertheless. They'd drop the W-League like a hot potato if they thought a politically palatable excuse could be spun.

I can't see that in the link. It just says that they were unable to gain the same funding from the first 2 seasons. That reads to me that FNSW were not willing to fund the team.

Me either Scottmac.

Its been made clear that FNSW who keep rising to new found levels of contempt in my books were no longer interested in funding a second Sydney women's team in mariners colours. Mariners had no money so went to the FFA but they weren't interested in assisting either.

Now we - CCM - are getting absolutely blasted across the Australian football community.
This all pisses me off no end.

If funding bodies pull funding and you don't have the money - what you gonna do??
I wish CCM had gone to the footballing community.
Could easily have raised $150K with enough notice.
