Thing is, Cahill has been adamant, as late as last year, that he wasn't going to be playing in the A-league.
So it was a bit funny to hear the shock-horror on the radio today, that he didn't receive an offer from anyone in the A-league and that he was delighted to be playing in a developing league now...

He needs to make up his mind I think... would've been happy to see him play in blue-yellow though :D
We all think Timmy is a saint, no more so than the man himself. I think at the end of the day, it all comes down to $$$ for Mr Cahill.

What an incredibly underwhelming transfer window.
Thanks for nothing
At least we didn't lose anyone .

That Adelaide lad was a mighty pick up imo, so all-in-all, it was a pretty good window for us. And as VicM says, it's not over yet...maybe that Championship quality striker is still as possibility.

Let's be a little realistic. Cahill was on USD3.5m for NYRB. In present terms that's over AUD4m per year. If we're losing AUD1m year (and I don't think we are, but keep with me) then we'd be taking that up to AUD5m a year and hoping that we pick it up on the upswing.

But to make money we'd have to spend other money on the back office to gear it up to service additional corporate support, and I'm not sure we can scale up that hard and execute it well enough to make it work, business-wise.

I saw a rumour about Brent Griffiths trialling somewhere, probably minor Asian league, but haven't seen any details

I think there's a lot of answers to this. Certainity for the young bloke for his career. Certainty for the club. And bear in mind that he was only signed until the end of this season prior to this contract extension. We could have seen him recovering from his injury, commencing training and rehabilitation with us during the remainder of the season, and then a good offer comes along and its see ya later. Not what we want. Having discovered his talent and nurtured him along into the HAL side we want a decent time to utilise him. I look forward to seeing him on the paddock in the 2015/16 pre season campaign.

Could be a missed opportunity.

Cahill made it clear he wanted more than just a playing contract if he were to choose the A-League over other suitors including, he says, from the Premier League and La Liga, as well as richer Asian leagues.

Cahill said: “To be totally honest I respect Australian football so much, and a lot of speculation has always thrown my name in.

“I’ve always asked for a project, grassroots and everything. I’ve never really had an official offer in the last two months. I can say openly that (Sydney FC CEO) Tony Pignata is a gentlemen — he did reach out after the World Cup but realistic offers? there was nothing ...

Cahill has sought a deeper role in a prospective A-League franchise in the past.

Because he's been excellent when he played and it would be a shame to have someone else snatch him up because we got cagey.... And because he can play in a position that we're struggling to fill...

What off field projects and grassroots stuff did he do while at NY Red Bulls?
What off field projects will he pursue while at Shanghai?

There is no better place where he can make a real difference to football, put back in as he has said, than Australia. Nowhere else is he held in such high regard and there is a ready made project here: Johnny Warren's football mission, which is also every other Aussie football fans mission.
China's government is getting behind football. How does 20,000 football schools sound?

They don't need Cahill and his project.
Australia does.

I really think a "realistic offer" has more zeros.

I don't blame him for making as much coin as possible while his career lasts, but this greater cause talk rings hollow.

Ok, so Cahill goes to China, makes a few sqillion bucks, sets up his fashion label then comes home & becomes the major shareholder of the Mariner`s. He then runs the COE & lives happily ever after sunning himself at Terrigal & producing Socceroos for ever more! The End.

Why wait and loose him. Doesn't cost you extra to sign him now. It's his new contract so sign him as soon as possible so you can tick the position off and stop wasting time and money trying to fill it. If Neill is your preferred option sign him ASAP and tick off the job.
