MARK BOSNICH could be handed an A-League lifeline, with Gold Coast United ready to offer him a short-term deal that could lead to the resurrection of his professional career.
The 37-year-old former Socceroos goalkeeper hasn't played in the A-League since ending a similar injury-replacement stint with Central Coast Mariners late last year but has tried to stay in shape, first by training with Sydney FC and, for the past two months, playing in the NSW Premier League with Sydney Olympic.
Despite the offer of a return to England with Swindon Town, Bosnich prefers to stay in Australia, where he is also building a career as a pundit for Fox Sports. But he has never conceded defeat on his football career, and is considering answering an SOS from Gold Coast, who this week lost first-choice keeper Jess van Stratten to an ankle injury.
Van Stratten is expected to discover today whether he will require an operation, which would sideline him for up to three months, but at the very least he will be out of action for the next few weeks. While experienced back-up keeper Scott Higgins is ready to start the season-opener against Brisbane Roar tomorrow night, Gold Coast's only other option is untried rookie Jerrad Tyson.
Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg spoke to Bosnich yesterday about a short-term deal, and the former Manchester United keeper could be training with the club this afternoon and take a spot on the bench at Suncorp Stadium tomorrow night. It's understood Sydney Olympic will release him ahead of their final game of the NSWPL season, against Marconi Stallions on Sunday, although he may return to Belmore for a promotion with Bulldogs star Hazem El Masri.
Bosnich was unavailable for comment last night but Bleiberg confirmed the discussions before adding: "I've watched him playing for Sydney Olympic, and there's no doubt in my mind he's still good enough for the A-League."
If Bosnich does suit up for Gold Coast, it raises the possibility of a reunion of sorts with Robbie Fowler when North Queensland visit Robina tomorrow week. After being slammed by Football Federation Australia for his no-show at a Brisbane press conference this week, Bleiberg quipped: "If this eventuates, and you've got Bosnich against Fowler next week, maybe the FFA will realise I don't have a problem with promoting the A-League."
Meanwhile, Gold Coast United's flamboyant owner, Clive Palmer, yesterday confirmed his company, Queensland Nickel, would be major sponsors of A-League rivals North Queensland Fury this season.
Bleiberg said: "I think it's great for the game and I'm even more proud that I brought Mr Palmer into football. "He's now doing a double job. I think we can now call the Fury our foster sister - or can I say the poor sister?"
Elsewhere, the Fury have been unable to complete the signing of Socceroos defender Shane Stefanutto in time for tomorrow night's season-opener against Sydney FC but the fullback is certain to make his debut against Gold Coast in round two.
Elsewhere, Adelaide United have confirmed the arrival of former Sydney FC skipper Mark Rudan, who has signed a one-year deal after being released by his Swiss club, FC Vaduz.
Rudan, 33, won't be available until the end of the month as he regains fitness, but has already set big targets for the perennial bridesmaids, saying: "I'll do my bit and hopefully help get their minds on the job this club has been bridesmaid too many times."
