Leijer returns home - A-League site

Melbourne has lured back championship-winning defender Adrian Leijer from English Premier League club Fulham in a massive boost for its defensive stocks.

Leijer has agreed to a three-year-deal with Melbourne after a two-year stint at Craven Cottage which failed to yield a single first-team appearance. He returns home hoping to re-ignite a career which has not developed as planned since he decided to pursue dreams of European football.

The 23-year-old will join the team ahead of Saturday's clash against North Queensland in Townsville and is a chance to start with Kevin Muscat currently out injured and defender Matthew Kemp doubtful to travel with his wife set to give birth this weekend.

When asked about the possibility of Leijer returning to the Hyundai A-League earlier in the week, coach Ernie Merrick gave a glowing endorsement of his talents.

"I think he would be a good acquisition, I think Fulham are pretty keen on hanging on to him. I think Adrian would be a terrific acquisition for any club in the A-League. I think a lot of him as a person s well as a player," Merrick said on Thursday.

"I would never tell him what to do, it's his career and his future. Whatever's best for him is the way to go."

Leijer played 41 games for Melbourne in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and was voted Hyundai A-League Young Player of the Year in Melbourne's double-winning year of 2006-07.

He has played one game for Australia at senior level, while he was part of the Olympic team for Beijing 2008.

Excellent signing ... one of the best defensive players in early days of the league ... he is also good at playing out from the back ...

Any word on our triallist?

hasn't arrived yet
is he a free agent ? or on another clubs books ? 'cos if he's not a free agent, aren't we stuffed from signing him for the season once 31st August ticks over ? (I suppose injury cover, but that would be all...or is Adrian's "injury" part of our cunning plan?)

NEWCASTLE have brought back former Jet Labinot Haliti for three months as an injury cover replacement for crocked Marko Jesic.
Haliti, 23, was one of the original Jets, joining the club for the inaugural Hyundai A-League season in 2005. After two seasons in Newcastle, the Kosovo-born Haliti moved on to Croatian club NK Slaven Belupo in the Prva HNL division.

Haliti moved swiftly on to KS Teuta Durres in the Albanian Superliga for 12-months before he signed for Polish Ekstraklasa side, LKS Lodz, where he excelled as an attacking midfielder.

However the club did not have their licence renewed to compete in Poland's top flight - freeing the way for him to return to the Jets.

"It's wonderful to have a player of Labinot's quality here in Newcastle once more, and it's great to see him return to our club," said Jets CEO John Tsatsimas.

"Obviously he has had some gained some valuable experience during his time in Europe and that will no doubt stand him in good stead for the remainder of the Hyundai A-League season.

"In general terms, it speaks volumes about the direction that the league is heading in when players are returning to Australia after having played abroad.

'The amount of players that we have seen return to these shores for this season is a massive boost for the competition."

He added: "Labinot has certainly joined us at a very pertinent time as we have a huge game up against Gold Coast this weekend and it is an important moment in the context of the season for us to strengthen our squad."

Quality signing by the Jest! He would only be better than he was before after playing 2 seasons in Europe.

No disagree. Brisbane look to be very thin over next month when U20 World Cup is on. Mariners and Gold Coast might take advantage.
