Forums are all about opinions so if wombat and style cafe wish to advocate Herbert thats great . He's not my cup of tea . As for our team it hasn't been fresh since Arnie came and left . And I don't want for us to just grind out results . I want the a league teams to fear us when they play us .

I wasn`t advocating Herbert as I would prefer Mulvey, but whoever we get, the thought of our rivals fearing us like they have in the past does sound great.

So dumb that respected pundits were putting Rudan's name into the mix.
They need to get this right, but time is of the essence too.

Yeah I wasn't referring to him :) I agree. Sydney stooge if ever there was one.
And if that isn't how he intends to come across, needs to do better.

I wonder whether one of the NPL names on the list is Brian (Bomber) Brown. Maybe he has changed his mind and wants to step up to the next level. Now that would be a bonus, a fantastic pedigree, no nonsense, Scottish tough logic, great with young players, keeps it simple and has been successful everywhere he has been. Our defence would improve no doubt

Six names on shortlist for new Central Coast Mariners coach

CENTRAL Coast Mariners will next week begin interviewing the six names on their short list drawn up to replace Tony Walmsley - including former Wellington boss Ricki Herbert.

Senior Mariners officials drew up the short list on Wednesday night, having waded through more than 60 applications to become the club’s new head coach.

It’s believed that three of the candidates are from overseas, while two more have a background in the state league — including one from Melbourne. The Mariners are eager to make the appointment quickly, with the new season just weeks away, after promising to conduct a “global hunt” for the new man with input from former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp..

Herbert is being seen as a leading candidate, after coaching Wellington for six years and getting to the finals three times, as well as taking the New Zealand team to the World Cup in 2010 where they emerged unbeaten. The 55-year-old has been coaching the Maldives after quitting the All-White job in 2013, but has signalled he is keen to return to the A-League, and his experience of working within tight budgets is likely to appeal to the Mariners hierarchy.

Walmsley was sacked dramatically 10 days ago, despite having remodelled the squad extensively since last year’s disastrous campaign. It’s believed that his renewed contract had contained stringent performance indicators, and the club moved quickly to act after the loss to state league side Green Gully in the FFA Cup.

Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp declined to comment on the names the club had chosen to interview, but said the standard of those applying had been pleasing for the club, after its bottom-placed finish last season.

“It wouldn’t be fair to discuss individuals, but out of 63 applications we had some very strong candidates,” Mielekamp said. “There were two with national team experience, some from Europe and some very strong local candidates.

“Now we’ll talk to them all, with a view to getting the right man in place sooner rather than later. We believe we have a competitive squad who the right man come work with this season.”

Whoever replaces Walmsley will have almost no room for manoeuvre with the squad, after signings including Ivan Necevski, Mickael Tavares and Jacques Faty from Sydney and Wellington duo Blake Powell and Kwabena Akubi.

The club is desperate to turn around its fortunes after a season in which they became the worst performing Australian side in the A-League’s history. Walmsley had been charged with deploying a youthful squad in the pursuit of attacking football, but a more pragmatic philosophy appears imminent given the experience of those brought in since last season.

So they have had 63 applicants and are interviewing 6 next week... two have international experience experience wonders if the other coach with international experience is Frank Farina...

From Fairfax and it says Mulvey has not applied.. also it says Redders designed the process we would use to appoint the coach ... that actually makes sense.

A coach from the state leagues could soon find himself on the bench at Central Coast Stadium after the Mariners confirmed their six-man shortlist includes a coach at the helm of a National Premier League club.

The Mariners whittled down a list of 60 applicants for their vacant coaching post this week and are prepared to make the rare move of promoting an NPL coach to the A-League. The club that has aimed to propel the careers of so many young players has not ruled out doing so for a coach with one of the key requirements being an understanding of the Australian football landscape.

The identity of the NPL coaches on the shortlist is not yet known although it's understood that among those in contention are former New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert and current Australian under-17s coach Tony Vidmar. Despite speculation linking him with the vacant position in Gosford, former A-League winning coach Mike Mulvey is not a candidate to replace Tony Walmsley.

Along with knowledge of the A-League is a strong emphasis on building the club's connection with their local community as a requirement for their next coach. Central Coast chief executive Shaun Mielekamp says the club is still open to looking overseas with at least one foreigner among the candidates.

"We've received over 60 applications and we're at a position now that we're able to nail that down to six. We're in the process of contacting all the applications including those six as we haven't spoken to them yet. This will take a couple of weeks to go down that road and we're really looking forward to understanding those coaches better. Those six are a mix of overseas local and outstanding coaches in the NPL," he said.

The club is said to have received advice from Harry Redknapp around the recruitment process. Despite media speculation linking him with the position, Sydney United coach and Fox Sports analyst Mark Rudan is understood not to have applied.

When I see "Redders", I immediately think Andrew Redmayne, not Redknapp. Took me a while to work out who you were referring to.

Hi wombat - he is arguably the best caoch ever in the NSWPL (final sentence below), he is about 60, from Wiki=

Brown started his career with Dumbarton FC before transferring to his hometown club of Falkirk FC which he featured in over 200 games for the club and became a fan favorite. In 1984 Brown moved to Australia to play with Australian Giants Brunswick Juventus which was supported by the Italian Australian Community. In his second year with Brunswick he quickly established himself as one of Australia's toughest defenders.

During this year he was a part of a strong back-line which boasted the likes of Mehmet Durakovic and Johnny Dewie. Brunswick Juventus claimed silverware three times and were crowned Australian Champions defeating Heidelberg United, South Melbourne and Preston Makedonia in the southern conference play-offs before eventually defeating Sydney City East over two legs in the Grand Final.

Brown played for three more seasons until officially retiring in 1988. Bomber would later take up an assistant coach role with Brunswick Juventus in 1991 and would have a short stint with New Zealand club Howick FC the following year.

In 1999 he would take up a head coach position with NSW State League giants Blacktown City FC and would have his first silverware in his coaching career winning state super league Grand Final in 1999. Bomber would claim the double in 2000 and another league title in the 2002–2003 NSW Premier League season.

Bomber would later have a short stint with Former Australian Giants Marconi Stallions and then would make the switch to the Sutherland Sharks FC and would claim the championship defeating his former club Marconi Stallions in 2008. He would later be offered an assistant role at A-League club North Queensland Fury but turned it down due to financial reasons.

In 2009 he would make the switch to the Bonnyrigg White Eagles and would claim the Premiership in the 2010 and 2012 seasons respectively and the clubs third Championship in 2013 defeating the Rockdale City Suns.

Brown is regarded as the best coach to grace the NSW Premier League competition.

Apparently the reason Brown has never coached at ALeague level is that he has a great job and does not need the money.
