I don't know about Herbert. I think he would be good for this season's limited outlook, but beyond that I don't know if he would be able to build a championship winning side.

Herbert is to old school for today's style of game , we don't need park the bus football . We need to give our team self belief , and fresh style of play .

We need someone with a clear style of play and one we can build upon as a club from our youngest youth team to the first team. Someone we can rely upon to lead our club for years to come and be able to implement a style that can do that. I don't think Ricki Herbert can deliver that.

Didn`t we have a fresh style of play last year that lead to the destruction of our self belief?
These guys need to go back to basics.
Learn how to defend together as a unit so we don`t leak goals, then build on that with creativity in the midfield & flair in attack.
Failing that we should be defending like fcuk & grinding out results wherever we can.

Forums are all about opinions so if wombat and style cafe wish to advocate Herbert thats great . He's not my cup of tea . As for our team it hasn't been fresh since Arnie came and left . And I don't want for us to just grind out results . I want the a league teams to fear us when they play us .

Ange our national coach took on a young Brisbane team and transformed the league I'd rather short term results for a long term gain .

I can't think of anyone in the Ange mould who is either:
A) available for the gig
B) interested in the $$ we have to offer.

A season of grinding out results is going to be more conducive to longer term gain than going all out flamboyantly, getting spanked every week, and picking up the spoon. Another season like last season will be disaster for the club.

Herbert is proven at this level and would have us set up to compete for the 6.
Of the other contenders, Vidmar I feel would be the personality we need, is in a similar mould to Popovic. Not yet proven at a senior level though.
NPL coaches such as Papas and Mori are again unproven, but Papas seems to be a good tactician and reads the game better than Tone ever did for us, and Mori has done wonderfully well at Adelaide.

Mulvey - left in strange circumstances and hasn't been back. Why? What is the back story?
Herbert seems the 'safe pair of hands' option. Not inspiring but has worked well with limited squads before.
Papas seems to have some good support but not proven at this level.
Mori is the same - but as you say has been outstanding at Adelaide.
Tony Vidmar, with Hutch and Sterj as assistants has a 'Mariners feel about it.

I'd drop Mulvey and Papas out of that group. But there are a world of managers out there. I'm not going to comment about overseas managers. The only ones I know would be too expensive, but there are bound to be many that would fit our requirements. i.e. work to a budget, develop younger players while shoring up our defence and restoring confidence and pride.

We need a team that other teams will fear first. With the players we have I think we will be very difficult to beat if we get a manager who can give them self belief and get back to basics first. Herbert I think will get us defensively sound and switched on. Not saying he is the one, but could do the job. We have some decent players in the front third who will score goals. I'm just looking for continued improvement week in week out. If that happens we will only get better and confidence will grow. Will take a while.

I don't mind Herbert too much - he's tried it before and then gone off an done other stuff... It's not a brilliant option, but then, neither was Arnie at the time... Or at least he didn't seem one.
At the end of the day though, there are two big things in it for me:

  1. Avoid the spoon
This should be a ridiculously low bar to set... Someone has to get it, I know, but I'd like it to not be us again.
  2. Make finals
In spite of how everyone talks about it, this is actually a fairly low bar to set as well... I mean look at it... The top-friggin-6 out of 10 make the finals. We might not look like a top 6 team based on last season, but the way it's talked about you'd think we were targeting a top-3-out-of-20 or something. Much as the A-league has improved, the distance between top and bottom is not THAT great. Even in the Moss/Walmsley cutover season, we were a couple of wins away from it and I still firmly believe that last season would've looked a lot better for us if we had faced someone like Adelaide a couple of times in the first couple of rounds.
Anything past 1. is really a boon at this point though, but I'd at least like to see us back in finals and I actually do think we have the team for it, if we can find a coach who is a good motivator and who can talk the boys back together as a unit... There was a lot more of that going on against Newcastle than I've seen in a while though... Even as defence was struggling at the end of the game, they weren't blaming each other for mistakes and arguing on the pitch... I know that's a low bar again, especially for a pre-season, but that's the reality of where we've been at, especially in defence, over the last couple of seasons.
I rate Posco and I rate Faty in defence... Storm-boy and Neill have the ability it's just a matter of whether they bring it.
I rate Monty and Tavares (although I worry about his red card count) and I definitely rate Rose Jr... Both McGing and Ascroft have played some excellent games when played as DMs - so I think we have a bit of room to move there.
And I rate Powell, Royo, Pain and Fab.

So there're some question marks, both around our #10 and about depth especially in defence, but I think the team is very far from being a lost cause.

We just need the right motivator...

Agree...with the right motivator we can do well. We cannot, just cannot get the spoon again. Top 6 is definitely doable. Most sides still look pretty incomplete and we, at least have had a settled squad for some time.

Herbert offers a no-nonsense, no-drama approach that suits what we need
..... getting back-to-basics.

Basics in defence, team cohesion - morale & the job of 'getting a result'.

He'll take the job knowing the limitations in both the squad, the abillity to recruit and the likely low pay packet.

After last season, this club needs a team that just needs to be seen by its members/fans to be 'at least' competing for the result each week.

I think Ricki can achieve that objective. Anything above and beyond that this year is a bonus in my eyes.

Through I would write a little of what I want in a coach and look at who we have had and are thinking about and give em a rating of sorts.

A good man manager.

Arnold excellent, LM excellent, Moss just OK, TW seemed out of his depth, Herbert has a good track record, Mulvey not a good record.

Able to set up a game plan, have a plan B, and able to analysis the other side

LM Ok, Arnold Excellent, Moss just Ok, TW hopeless, Herbert Ok, Mulvey excellent.

Player Recruitment

LM excellent, TW excellent, Arnold Ok, Herbert OK, Mulvey unknown

Working within a budget

LM Excellent, TW excellent, Herbert excellent, Moss poor, Arnold hopeless, Mulvey Ok

Work with juniors

ML excellent, Arnold excellent, Mulvey excellent, Herbert good, Moss poor, TW good.

Community Engagement

LM beyond excellent, LM excellent, Herbert excellent, Moss Ok, Arnold poor, Mulvey unsure

Play an attractive style

Mulvey excellent all the other good throught to poor

If my analysis Mulvey is a better coach and plays an attractive style whereas Herbert is a better man manager, and at having back up plans, is better at community engagement and working within a budget.

I actually stated I would prefer Mulvey to Herbert however I'd be perfectly happy with Herbert. 1 year contract with an extension option.
I have a feeling we may get someone from the UK.
I wouldn't mind Leeds old manager Steve Evans, he didn't deserve the sack but Leeds have a Chairman that makes MC look reasonable.
