Hey lads and ladies. Smithy here from Yellow Fever.

While we hate you for not Freeing Weemac we just wanted to reach out and sympathise over this financial bullshit.

It wasn't that long ago that this was us:

IRD tackles Phoenix owner over $3.58m debt

It's bullshit that club owners put clubs in these situations sometimes by accident, sometimes to play Russian roulette with the FFA, and sometimes just because they're douchebags.

So yeah, lots of feels from us to you on the finance front.

But still FREEWEEMAC :)

Thanks for the support ... TBH we have grown used to it .. AU are reportly also in financial trouble and 442 reporting are for sale for 5 million... Add the Jest with Tinkler selling them...

Not all clubs have owners with deep pockets and our current owner is a mystery does some brilliant stuff and then has foot in mouth time and time again...

At a broader level it highlights how small our media deal is and then need across the board to lift ratings and crowds so the next media deal will pay most of the bills and crowd revenue make the cost of stadium hire affordable.

NEWS: Mariners reaffirm commitment to Coast

There's no place like home

Central Coast Mariners Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bruce Stalder, has today moved to reassure members and supporters that the Club has no intention to move from its home – the New South Wales Central Coast.
Stalder, who was quoted in both the The Sun-Herald and The Australian newspapers over the past two days, said rumours that the Club may be relocated to Wollongong or elsewhere are plainly false.

“We are investing heavily in the Central Coast, and this includes a multi-million dollar training and community hub in Tuggerah known as the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence,” Mr Stalder said.

“In fact, this coming Friday we have the opening of our aquatic centre - which is already in operation in partnership with the YMCA - at the site.”

“Work on the third stage of our Centre of Excellence will commence next month, and this includes the development of a public gym, retail outlets, a child care centre, plus an office block not only for our administration, but several local businesses and business people.”

“If anyone needs further evidence of our commitment to the region and our plans to stay put and grow on the Central Coast, I invite them to contact the Club and we will personally take them on a tour of the site,” he said.

Stalder acknowledged that the Club does owe money to Gosford City Council, however emphasised that a payment plan with Council is in place to ensure that that debt is finalised.

He also said that figures reported in the The Sun-Herald on Sunday were inflated.

“Reports of a “lockout” of Central Coast Stadium are incorrect,” Mr Stalder said. “No one from the Council has contacted us to note that we might not be able to play at the Stadium come the start of Hyundai A-League season ten, nor was anyone from Council actually quoted in the article.”

“Gosford City Council are simply not the type of organisation to make threats to Central Coast Mariners.”

“We have reduced our debts to Council significantly over recent times, and we will continue to do so.”

“We have very open and regular communication with Gosford City Council, who are a valued partner of the Club, and we can assure fans that the eleven Hyundai A-League matches scheduled for the venue this season will be played there.”

“Central Coast Stadium, Gosford, will continue to be our primary base, and the Central Coast will always be the home of the Mariners,” Stalder concluded.

So the thing I was saying about scattergun comms - no such issue here. This is nice and unequivocal. I still have an issue with taking two games away from home and I've written about that many tomes so I won't add to it here.

It'd be good if there were similar clarity around things like the relationship with CCF, the future of CCMA, the plans to attract additional investment...

To be fair it's a nice score board but who lets you buy something & not pay for it for what 6 years. They should have called it in earlier or are they going with MC has money lets get him while we can.

Its funny that your congratulating the club for communications relating to the denying of rumours. There is nothing in there that hasn't already been said. Some of it was reported in the original article "exposing" the Mariners troubles. The only thing new in there is an offer of a personal tour.

I wonder where all these rumours are coming from? The people who seem to come forward with all the information before anyone else, who would they be associated with? Any guesses?

As for the CCF & future of CCMA thats been taken out of their hands & nothing they say will bring any joy or clarification. In fact it may just be the beginning of the next round of rumours ;)

Some points not raised here or by the journalist or answered by the Mariners is how come the Mariners are paying for the screen in the first place and once paid for do the Mariners get some form of return on investment (i.e when other sports / Christmas carols etc use it ) or is this another opportunity for the Mariners to publicise their commitment to the coast that was missed.

Mariners haters? Trouble-makers. There is even an ex-Newcastle Herald journo living in London taking pot-shots at the Mariners on 'The Roar' website.

Now here's another 'journo' that makes some bizarre links between the Mariners and A-League expansion (2+2=22, etc):

http://www.goal.com/en-au/news/4021...-silence-undermines-the-mariners?ICID=HP_HN_1

Maybe it's time the Mariners copied the Jets and come up with some positive but totally false rumours to drown out the negative ones. eg. 'Lionel Messi close to signing for Mariners', 'Manchester United owners keen to own Mariners', 'McGlinchey announces it was all a media beat-up and is desperate to play for Mariners'.

For both of these posts I have the same response - rumours and scuttlebutt aren't the problem. People will spin shit about anybody at any time, it's not a problem unless there are grains of truth.

None of this shit would have any currency if it weren't for the *fact* that we've owed people money for yonks and that MC talked for quite a while about potential moves.

Media outlets are about writing stories to get clicks. If they hear a rumour that might get clicks, they'll write about it. It might be an update on an old story or a slightly new angle, doesn't matter; if it gets clicks they'll write about it.

If we clear up the situation on both (and the story with Stadler quotes above and another on TWG regarding the stadium do that) then we wouldn't have the issue, because everyone knows that it's a non-story.

Combat rumours with fact and you can't really go wrong.

The bigger problem with rumours is what it does to our media profile. If we have a situation where rumours are allowed to run, while they're not particularly damaging in themselves, they prevent us getting other stories up - things like profile pieces on Malick Mane and Richard Vernes are the things we want to see at the moment, stories about Moss's first full pre-season, stories about how our mid-season signings will be like brand new players with a full Mariners pre-season behind them, etc. Factual stories that talk up the positives and build excitement for the year.

The opportunity cost that arises when rumours are able to run is that we can't sell the stories we want to sell, because they're the stories that sell memberships.

Sorta of a rant sorta fact and sorta F the modern world, sorta ideas just splashed in no particular order ...

I have watched Paul Kelly over the last few days talk about his book on Australian politics ... his concern is the 24 hour media cycle and numerous online and traditional outlets add the fractured number of various groups and the power of interest groups further that people with big egos can easily make themselves heard ... He maintains this is making governing Australia very difficult for whoever is in power .. In many ways I think a similar thing has happen to our club.. We simply don't have the communication processes in place nor do answer things very well...

SBS IMO have openly attacked us from pre Hal .. to many examples to site and this has created lots of other online sites to follow suit..

Hand on heart not the other thing while Charlesworth has been terrible at communication well maybe beyond poor ... he has done some good things and he did save the club .. and he seems to have run into a council nowhere near as supportive as they make out... and from what I am told an association who expect almost a Ajax level ... again problems both sides ...

What I find annoying is the degree of bias against our club and IMO it starts with SBS ... the best example I can sight is Fozzie from Hal 1 and to now is constantly talking about the need to develop technical skills and training facilities .. yet he has never looked or commented on the COE or the International Football School something he SCREAMS about that needs to happen.

My take is Charlesworth is a very busy person who suffers from when asked a question often saying the answer and then that answer is often taken out of context .. However we seem to be that story line for the media that is always broke ... how we turn it around I have no idea ..

In closing I have always believed the constant attack on LM by SBS when he was coach and the label they placed on us hurt big time with the locals ... the constant negative press cannot be any good for us neither ...

More than any other year I wanta do well this year just to shove it right up the you know what of many in the media ... especially SBS ... or the Sour Bitter Sh*ts ...

It goes back to Uncle Les (who surely must be pleased we have a Hungarian on the books?) who always thought a Western Sydney side should have been a foundation member not the Central Coast. What has hurt Les, Fozz and SBS since has been the continued success of the Mariners, despite the financial problems, which really sticks in their self appointed elitist anti-English (anti McKinna) football throats.
How often has SBS criticised Sydney for their annual waste of millions of dollars? or Victory, which hasn't won a trophy in five years? or Adelaide which doesn't promote young Australian talent?
SBS hates us and I really don't care!

This partly ties into another factor, which is the traditional closeness between SBS and the PFA. That means that we're in the shit on a range of fronts -
  • we came in instead of a second Sydney team (the PFA's Australian Premier League proposal back in 2003 or 2004 suggested two teams in Sydney and Melbourne and one each in the other capitals)
  • we're cheapskates, reportedly often *just* making it over the salary 'floor' and have (until the COE) had a history of having *very* rudimentary facilities for training etc., plus going the cheap option for our many overseas jaunts for the AFC CL
  • we've missed pays on a number of occasions over the years
TBF - on the second and third counts the union has a point. It's not ideal for a club to be penny-pinching on those things.

On the fact that the storyline is often that we're broke, the problem's a bit of a funny one. We have probably lost in our history roughly what SFC loses in a year. But they've got billionaire owners who can absorb that. We don't. The eternal frustration of following this club is imagining what life might be like if we just had a *bit* more financial backing...
