Was at the CCM v Nix FFA game the other nite & was talking to a mate of Deej's who works for Newc Uni Sports Science and he told me that when he was up at the Scummer's doing fitness tests for pre-season David Carney is so fat that he lathered his body with a coat of 'vaso' to avoid being tested by the University staff. They couldn't perform the 'pinch-test' anywhere on him to determine his skin-fold fat levels, so he got out of it.:popcorn::popcorn:

Note to Walmsley: 1st game against The Scum, run at & get in behind Carney for the full 90min.

So my 'sauce' wasnt lying:

Carney out as Sydney ready for Japan ACL test:

Despite being recruited last month specifically with their ACL campaign in mind, Carney did not travel on Sunday with teammates, who are in Saitama preparing for Wednesday night's group-stage match with the J-League heavyweights.

Coach Graham Arnold said the 32-year-old ex-Newcastle utility will devote all his energy to readying for this Saturday's away Big Blue with Melbourne Victory - the first of three major clashes within a week.

"Carney's only been with us for a couple of weeks, and we made him shed quite a few kilos in those few weeks" Arnold said.
:vhappy:

Rumour going around Newcastle is that the Jets have been sold to a Chinese consortium, and, wait for it, the new CEO is a former Mariners head coach and current politician!

I guess there are only so many times your offer of help can be rejected before you start looking for other opportunities.

I love Laurie for what he's done for the club but, tbh, I don't think he's done anywhere near what I would've hoped for in his time as mayor - especially not when you take into account the talk about how NRL excerpted their influence on the councils. That's from a sporting viewpoint - I'm very much not a Lib, so politically we were never going to gel...
It is not all down to how the club treated him... Things like how much contact he's had with MC seems irrelevant to me, that's what Shaun M is there for and from the sound of it, they have been in contact.

It's not a GREAT look though, for a guy who lamented that the derbies were lacking their edge these days though ;)

Anyway... I'd wish him luck, but obviously I hope that they fail miserably - on the field - but that they can keep their heads above water off field :)

FORMER Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna says he wants a senior management role with the Newcastle Jets under prospective new owner Martin Lee.

McKinna has been acting as a go-between and adviser to the Chinese businessman as he negotiates with Football Federation Australia to buy the Jets’ A-League licence. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of June.

McKinna, who was coach of the year in the first season of the A-League after guiding the low-budget Mariners to the grand final, told theNewcastle Herald on Thursday that he hoped to play a role at the Jets, despite his long association with their F3 derby rivals.

“He still has to get the club yet – I don’t want to pre-empt things – but, obviously being involved from day one, bringing them to the table, it’s something that I would be looking for, looking into, definitely,” he said.

“It’s not been discussed yet. I’m definitely interested in being involved. The mayor thing’s all come to a halt down there with the amalgamation, I’ve got my own business on the Coast, so I’m working in my business full-time now. I’d definitely be interested because it’s a great opportunity to get back in football.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with people in Newcastle. I had a lot of dealings with Newcastle boys over the years because when I played at APIA in the old national league half of them used to stay at my house, like John McQuarrie, Graham Jennings, Darren Stewart. Mark Jones was my assistant in China.”

The 54-year-old Scotsman coached the Mariners until 2010, when he moved into a back-office role and handed the clipboard to Graham Arnold.

He coached in China in 2011 and 2012 and returned to the Central Coast as director of football in 2012 and again, briefly, in 2014, when he was the sitting Mayor of Gosford, an office he held until council amalgamations forced him out two weeks ago.

If people expect him to come in and start shelling out for superstars, I don’t think that’s going to happen.- Lawrie McKinna

He conceded some Newcastle supporters might not welcome his involvement but said he was prepared to earn their respect.

“Going through life you can’t keep everybody happy. Being the Mayor of Gosford for four years, it doesn’t matter what decision you make, you can’t make everybody happy, but you just do what’s right for you and right for the town and right for the team, and people respect that.

“I think you have to earn respect. You can’t walk into any job and expect everybody to think you’re amazing. You have to come in and earn respect, and I’ve done that everywhere I’ve went.”
