RD 3: City vs Mariners

Miles ahead of Moss.
We're playing a bunch of kids, give them time and maybe one or two astute signings and we'll be much better.

Need the signings desperately in the back line, maybe just my pessimism but given the Mariners track record in signings more miss than hit. :(

Even that goal that was offside. Defenders walking when players were unmarked. Very, very lazy defenders. I'm getting really angry at just how lazy one or two of our players actually are in defence. If they're not interested in playing football, piss them off for somebody who is. I'm sure there are plenty of defenders who aren't afraid to get a little out of breath.

Rose in particular is killing us today. Did he have a couple of sneaky lunchtime beers or something???

Did you mean Roux?

I'm watching the game on the edge of my seat expecting us to score any minute, loving it!
I hope TW keeps his nerve and continues this style of play.

With Reddy on the way out that might free some cap space and coin for an experienced CB in January.
Someone like Patty Z would be good. :)

I've been really busy the last few days. On top of that Fridays paper was chucked in the gutter with the rain, so I missed the bit about Reddy. Funnily enough I only mentioned to a bloke in work on Wednesday that I wondered how long it would be before Reddy played up.

Does TW say attacking football? I thought it was entertaining football.

Although I like the idea of playing the "kids" the defence really does need an old head in there to sort them out. Bosnar & Rose back for next week?

Schoolboy defending killed us. McGing tried hard. Ascroft is Ok...ish. Neil is a nightmare. Roux must be allergic to Melbourne City shirts.

They all just watch the ball like lemmings, completely oblivious to picking up unmarked players.

How can you stop a goal if ...

1. You are standing on the wrong side of your player?
2. You are 10yds away from your player......you can't cut out the ball because the pass is always on?

We also need some defensive structure in midfield.......

Bring in a defensive coach now to teach them the basics.

Please don't compare us now to under Moss. That was a very dark period. Now is much better but we need to wise up a lot.

Watching the Glory-Reds match and I would rather watch our style of play, even if we get beaten. I think Perth have already parked the bus.

I am prepared to put up with this sort of play all season. IF we can keep this team together it will pay off big time. Not only with results but with bums on seats.

The attackers (most of the team) are developing more understanding each week. The new signings are working out well. Even though many may disagree the two centre halves have a heap of talent and are looking better.

Unfortunately Micky Neil is looking a bit out of his depth at the moment. A long lay off with injury can mess you up especially when you are young. A bit of time with the youth until he gets his mojo back (hopefully) looks needed.

This rebuilding of the the Club, not just the team will, take time. I am prepared to ignore results this year and enjoy watching the team play.

I'd leave the CBs alone. Rose for Neill and Posco for Roux.

That said I'd love to have start Liam on each game next to Monty.

We're certainly entertaining; tighten up a little at the back and sharpen a little at the front and we're good.

We make a good run at the last 18 weeks and we'll certainly make finals. Use the first 9 to sort the system.

Rosey and Posco in the back 4 would make a difference, you can cover for inexperience in the back when you have a defensive midfield structure but this is not part of the TW plan. The attacking mindset means too much space in midfield and when the backs make a mistake playing out/attacking it means we are left short in defence, our players have to make a decision about marking their player or committing to the runner coming through midfield. Bosnar would struggle in this sort of set up, just doesnt have the mobility or speed imo, today would have looked much worse if he was there. When we went 2 down and we were chasing, the defence were left horribly exposed and subjects them to even more criticism. I am happy to see this attacking approach but wish we also had a plan B to adopt when needed. Easy to say there is no relegation so just go for it, but if SFC rips us a new one next week then it will be difficult for many fans to keep positive.

I thought we looked more organised at the back but individual errors let us down. Trying to have 2 deep banks of 4 is a step in the right direction.

Not withstanding the various members of the Reddy family frantically posting on FB, I thought Izzo did well. No worse than Reddy. (maybe they aren't all family but some of the hysterical shit is unbelievable)

To my knowledge, Izzo has never stomped on a Mariners player so Reddy can jog on.

Roy is a worry. Not a target5man, not a poacher. Needs someone alongside him or replaced by a proper target man.

Need Posco back ASAP, has Ascroft covered easily.
Rose for Neill needs to be done Yesterday
Agree O Donovan not being used correctly or swap for Heff.

We had them after the 60th min as they were cooked from midweek, but we didn't have the composure to finish our chances or make better decisions. To many bad passes in the box then exposed when turned it over.

Neill just keeps being exposed not past half way attacking like Roux but not back to help McGing. In total no mans land for Williams assist. Smart change by city. Burn our already exposed defenders with pace.

Mooy was just toying with Izzo early but did well except for the cross to Kisnorbo but wasn't helped by Ascroft getting burnt badly.

I like Ashcroft and McGing, they definitely have a future, but for now, I'm afraid they're the weakest CB paiiring in the HAL. I thought a big positive though was that the combination play and understanding between Austin, Caceres, Fitzy and Ferriera was really showing some positive development.

Unfortunately I think FFC is right about Roy. He looks good on the ball, works very hard, makes some good runs (though to no gain) ...in short I like him. But most of our service is coming via crosses from Austin and Fab... and he doesn't have the height or leap to get much joy against most HAL CB's this way so it's a serious issue for TW to solve.

If he's not already, he needs to focus on two or three very specific runs for Roy, where Fab and Austin are looking to put the balls early into very specific areas or cut them back to precise positions. At the moment it all seems purely invention and adhoc and we are not getting the joy that so many balls into the box should be bringing. Ironically with this service Matty Simon may have been have a field day...:headbutt: But Roy has a couple yards of pace on him and much better touch. :innocent: However we need to work him into the game, or otherwise we might have to put two upfront and Fitz makes way in the middle. Which would be a shame when they were making clear signs of progress this week.

We are still very much a work in progress but there is an awful lot to like as well as a couple of things which need fixing.

We were very unlucky in attack with the last pass not quite hit right, a toe, heel or even arm just deflecting the ball away and then the woodwork also conspiring against us. Our play looks very sharp and our ability to keep the ball and create things in tight situations is very good which when combined with our ability to take players on at will across the park would scare the shit out of any defence and coach in the league.

What wouldn't scare them at the minute is our defending. We are very, very naive. As others have mentioned we get caught ball watching, the wrong side of players and lose players too easily at set pieces. Mooy has to be the most one footed player in the league yet somehow we managed to let him get it onto his right foot all the time. An early switch always seems to catch us flat footed and ball watching. We do have Posco to come back which will sure us up and I am with the others on here that will give it time as the potential in this team is unbelievable.

Even at 3 - 1 down with 5 mins left I actually still fancied us to get a draw with our attack although I did also think it could have been 5- 1 also but I am loving watching the football this year after been woken out of the coma Moss's football had put me in.

So how are people feeling about our attack?
We're creating plenty but not getting much actually on target, despite Fitzy's love affair with the crossbar. Even round one, yes we scored a few goals, but they were from penalty kicks and one lucky deflection from the keeper.
So, while I'm a big fan of our new style and I think there are great things to come (I'm in the 'work in progress' camp, so I'm not too worried, but I think it's worth discussing), are we overlooking a potential issue with our finishing? Or do we expect it will sort itself out once the players get more comfortable in their style, and start getting a few wins under their belt?

For what it's worth, it was a more entertaining loss than some of our wins previously....

A no.9 and a no.5 and we'll be top 6 material. That simple for me.

Playing two 20 year old CB's is always fraught with danger, 1 is fine with an experienced head (see Patty + Sains)

We've always struggled to find a star striker and that seems to continue this season.

We've got a great, young attacking midfield though and Rose/Caceras are great for the future.

Keep the faith

What concerns me a bit is the huge hole in midfield when we are attacking and lose the ball. I think that needs a bit of attention.

I agree with this however the combination with Roy has yet to evolve. A couple of times yesterday I thought that Roy was overlooked by Fab or he delayed his cross too long and was marked by the time it came.
