RD 3: City vs Mariners

Don't be scared of 442 due to euro snobs. It works.
France smashed Brazil in a World Cup final playing 442.
In EPL City just stopped playing it but were top of the league in that formation.
The key is Leicester, Palace, West Brom and Watford play 442 and all are placed well above where they should be in the EPL.
It's hard to break down and allows you to transition well from attack to defence.

When you play a clearly better side then you switch to Moss style 4141 and play for the draw or hopeful 1.0 win on the counter.
Don't understand why people are snobs about playing styles. Any formation and style can be enjoyable to watch if done well. Most of the time it seems to end up coming down to cultural cringe...

No interest in Roy at all.

Just watching the game again. First goal was always going to happen when you see our organisation for the set piece.

Kisnorbo just runs past Fitzy and Ascroft as they are defending 23 and 28 respectively.

Ascroft picks it up late and tries to get to him but it's way too late, Kisnorbo isn't giving up front position.

The player who does nothing in this situation? Neill. Can't understand why someone like Kisnorbo wouldn't be marked tightly in a situation like this. Neill watches and has a little jog back towards goal. Would be nice to have a dominant CB!

Roy does a lot of work making little runs, but Fab and Cas have both ignored him in the opening 15 minutes, opting to run/shoot. Austin tried linking once, resulted in a corner.

Side note, Izzo came out of his box a few times to scissor-kick a ball clear. Was successful on all attempts I think, which will do his confidence good.

Nice work greenlig. I know there are players in the wall but look at the lack of experience and height in that frame.
Despite his height Austin doesnt seem to be used in set pieces in attack or defence.
We are getting into the final third so much easier this season, just need the midfield/striker combination to gel.
Agree re Izzo.

In this still you can see Kisnorbo was actually helped enormously by a pretty basic (and illegal) screen from (I think) Jacob Melling as Kisnorbo makes his run.

The issue is structural there - there's a 2 on 1, and we've got a little guy marking a big guy. The cross is planned, the screen is planned, and we've got nobody near it. That's meat and drink for City.

I don't blame Neill alone for that.

We clearly need to work on set pieces.

That's probably fair, but you'd assume it's his job to watch the run as he's the floating defender. Watching the rest of the game he just looks uncomfortable and lacking confidence. Couple of times he clears weakly, loses the ball when running, etc. I generally liked him when we had a stronger back line, but right now he looks too indecisive.

Fizty and Melling aren't too different in size, but the fact that Kisnorbo is completely free boggles.

Lack of experience is the major factor. You can bet TW is going through these and the youngsters will learn. Hopefully quickly as you can bet Arnie is looking at this too.

The magical thing about the law of diminishing returns is that our kids will learn faster as they develop than his more experienced players will as they consolidate. In short, we've got plenty of improvement in us.

If these are the goals we are conceding it shouldn't take the coaching too many rounds to figure out how it is occurring and how to fix it. I am very happy to persist with our game and learn to plug these holes over the first round. As has been said, young team have lots of improvement in them, which is exciting really given their collective age/fitness.

They could learn a lot from a well drilled under 10 side.

Maybe something like....."make sure you can always touch the shirt of the player you are marking when they have the ball"

Looks even worse from the opposite angle.

We will definitely get better.

I think we need to shore up the midfield defensively and continue to attack down the flanks.

I'd like to see..

Isso
Posco McGing Bosnar rose
Fab Monty Caceras Austin
Heff. Paddy.

City have two players they go to on corners and free kicks.
Partalu who's was left out and Kisnorbo. Should of had 3 on him.
These are basic mistakes you can't make at this level.

What happened to Meiling, I remember him being a absolute pest who had a ripper against Victory in a derby last year.
Was surprised to see he was playing when named called late in the game. Was surprised thought he was better than that or did he have a defensive role.

Had a terrible injury last season, just coming back from it. Don't know if he'll ever get back to his best so many of our best young players never seem to be able to get back from serious injuries...

The real problem there is not only the inexperienced defenders but also the inexperienced keeper as well.
Who organizes the defence?
There is no-one there taking control & directing the defenders.
Bring Rosey in ASAP as a central defender.
