Do it for the spoon

We may take ya spoon....but we'll never take ya missis (too ugly), never take ya job (toilet cleaner at Mt Hutton shopping centre) never take ya dignity (impossible to take what you have never had).

Newcastle will always be the Scum of the HAL......MC, apparently thought treating us like Newcastle people, would be character building!??!

He's been released, apparently to take up an opportunity overseas. Why they would release their top scorer with only 1 match to go beats me. Glad he's gone though.

Probably because it's only 1 match to go, no chance of finals spot for them.

so ....... may as well let him go & give some kid a chance instead.

Miller challenges Jets to be ruthless against Mariners:
mieierwmt.jpg

Newcastle Jets coach Scott Miller has challenged his players to take out their frustrations at missing the A-League finals on last-placed Central Coast Mariners.

Newcastle, sitting eighth, travel to Gosford to take on the Mariners in Saturday's season-ending derby and Miller has demanded his players finish on a high.

"I've challenged the team to be ruthless this week," Miller said.

"We haven't (handed) a massive defeat to a club yet this season and we've been on the back of two ... so I'm challenging the group for that.

"I'd like to sit on the bench seeing a fluid, back-to-front performance with a purpose and a passion but really with an emphasis on scoring goals.

"I feel if we go down there with this playing group and this mentality, we'll be dominant but - if we don't treat it as an important game and we're complacent in our approach - then we'll fall short."

Central Coast, who will finish on the bottom of the ladder regardless of Saturday's result, are on the verge of becoming the first team in A-League history to fail to keep a single clean sheet through an entire campaign.

Coach Tony Walmsley has urged his charges to dig deep in front of their home fans in what will be Spanish marquee Luis Garcia's last game for the club.

"He's going to leave a very large imprint on everybody that he's come into contact with," Walmsley said.

"I think what he's done, first and foremost, is show our players - our young players especially - what top-level football looks like.

"There are things that will be etched in everyone's memory for a long time in a very difficult season and I hope he can sign off with a great performance for himself, a great performance for the fans and put in a contribution that lifts us to victory."

Stats that matter

* There have been just six goals scored in the past five derbies, with neither side finding the back of the net more than once in any of those matches

* Not since the 2008 playoffs have the Mariners mustered back-to-back wins against the Jets

If the stats matter you would think they would get it right - that would be the Jets who have not had back to back wins since the 2008 playoffs.

Mariners however:-

25/01/2014 Central Coast Mariners 3-0 Newcastle Jets
15/03/2014 Central Coast Mariners 3-1 Newcastle Jets
11/10/2014 Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Newcastle Jets

BLUFFER’S GUIDE

Contrary to the usual simmering tension, both teams have anticipated this F3 Derby as an opportunity for relief.

The end of the season marks a chance to begin rectifying their respective situations with the Mariners bound for the wooden spoon and Newcastle missing a sixth straight Finals Series.

Several players could be playing for contracts but it’s the badge, shirt and supporters in the stands that should be at the forefront of their interests come Saturday.

Central Coast can square the ledger for the season with a win on their own patch, although it was in Gosford that the Jets nicked a 1-0 win through Steven Ugarkovic back in February.

That result ended an eight-year winless run on the Coast and put Scott Miller’s men within four points of the top six with six games remaining.

However, a run of just one draw across the next five games – the same recent record the Mariners boast for this match – has scuppered any chance of post-season involvement.

Though their fate has been sealed for some time, the home side can end on some level of celebration with a fifth and most important win of the campaign.

Finishing in front of their own fans will be a fillip but Newcastle’s admirable display away to Brisbane Roar last round shows they aren’t ready to give it away just yet.

OPTA DATA

• Not since the 2008 finals have the Central Coast Mariners mustered back-to-back wins against the Newcastle Jets in the Hyundai A-League. (This is incorrect)

• There have been just six goals scored in the last five F3 Derbies, with neither side finding the back of the net more than once in any of those matches.

• The Mariners have conceded more goals in the second half of games than seven Hyundai A-League teams have conceded in the whole campaign (42).

• Jets gloveman Mark Birighitti (96) has made more saves than any other keeper so far this Hyundai A-League season at a save percentage of 71.6%, the best of any player who’s faced at least 220 shots.

ROUTE TO GOAL

While this fixture has produced few goals in recent times, a release from expectation should enable greater freedom going forward.

Newcastle have the most room to improve given their competition-low average of less than a goal per game. Scott Miller’s side have only scored more than a single goal on five occasions this term.

Ryan Kitto failed to convert a good chance to put the Jets two clear in Brisbane last round but looked lively in flanking Morten Nordstrand.

Kitto, Nordstrand and defensive-minded utility Ben Kantarovski are the only current squad members to have reached two goals following the mutual termination of Milos Trifunovic’s contract.

In the visitors’ favour is the leakiness of Central Coast’s defence, which is seeking to secure a first clean sheet at the final attempt.

Luis Garcia artfully headed home a well-constructed move away to Western Sydney last Friday but the wooden spooners rarely troubled their higher-ranked opponents.

A reasonably secure Newcastle won’t be easy to pierce either, though spearhead Roy O’Donovan should receive opportunities to open his F3 Derby account.

WHO’S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

Luis Garcia. The former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool man this week revealed the F3 Derby will all but certainly be his last as a player in Australia.

Betta' hav a blinder.

I dunno that enough was shown last weekend for him not to tbh. If HB can't play and Bray is injured I thinkI might actually agree with Izzo in goals... Unless we want to try out Rosie in there as well ;-)

I saw Posco and Micky Neil in Gosford this morning and they looked pretty relaxed so they must know something we dont.;)

I think we can win today if we have a go. Scum will sit back and try to contain us and they probe for the usual silly mistakes.

However I think we will win today.

I'd go with:

Izzo
Ascroft McGing Posco Neil
Fab Rosebud Monty Austin
Budgie
Roy

I'm pretty confident that we can get a win out of this as well - whether we'll do it is a different thing altogether...
We've been held goalless fairly little this season I think - in fact I just had a look at the ladder, we've scored 5 more than last season, and we obviously still have a game to go... Unfortunately they did hold us goalless the last time we played them but I'm thinking/hoping that'll change...
IF they can find the motivation in how embarrassing the showing was last week and how this is a derby etc, I actually think we have the potential to rout them.
As it stands though, Nordstrand is a bit of a threat - he didn't get any last time, but he worries me a bit.

Anyway, going into this with a positive mindset... 3-0 and a red-faced squadron! ;)

If the stats matter you would think they would get it right - that would be the Jets who have not had back to back wins since the 2008 playoffs.

Mariners however:-

25/01/2014 Central Coast Mariners 3-0 Newcastle Jets
15/03/2014 Central Coast Mariners 3-1 Newcastle Jets
11/10/2014 Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Newcastle Jets

And as I recall in the 2008 playoffs:

Major semi first leg - Central Coast Mariners 0-2 Newcastle Jets
Major semi second leg Central Coast Mariners 3-0 Newcastle Jets AET
Grand final - Central Coast Mariners 0-1 Newcastle Jets (not that there's any part of me wants to recall that...)

So incorrect there too.

I'm hoping a win today will make me feels a tiny bit better about this season - but still looking forward to next. COYY!
