R15: Nix v CCM @ the Caketun

First half very poor and yet again we conceed early. Continuely turning into the 3 man triangle trap. There was a header from a corner where the only two people in coee where two nix who probably put each other off. Izzo was spewing.

2nd half was the band is playing with no conducter. Definitely need mini Messi.

Appiah doesn't let the ball run past him and use his pace like Trent does, he traps it with his right foot and his body is turned back to his own goal. Stops his movement forward and allows the defender to get back in place.

We look a lot more counter attacking with Fab but apart from quick feet, he just has hog instincts. Sometimes does nice passes but that shot in first half where we were on the break and he took it to far instead of passing to Appiah he just blasted wastefully from top of box.

Just no cohesion in the attack today, Pain was dominated and they shut him down early making effective tackles before he got motoring. Got behind only once I think.

Two steps forward one step back.

Think Paul got the lineup wrong as had no fresh legs for the midfield which wasn't playing to there best ability.

Hoping for some signing news now we have some space

I'm still optimistic about avoiding the spoon. We just need a little luck in games and on the injury and illness front. With the right recruitment I'm still not writing off the six.

Very strange choices by Paul tonight - but also shows the thinness of our squad.

These guys make a pretty good second XI. Necesvski, Neill, Ascroft, McGing, Roux, Berry, Rose, Powell, Appian-Kubi, Bingham, Ferriera. Six of those guys played started tonight and one came on.

These guys form the basis of a pretty good first XI with (as has been acknowledged here for nearly 2 years) a CB and a CAM needed to be added. Izzo, Galloway, Faty, New CB Poscoliero, Montgomery, Tavares, new CAM Pain, O'Donovan, Buhagiar. Five of these guys started and one came on.

Yep, the wind tunnel and rain combined with a physical athletic welly = NIGHTMARE for our possession based game.

Roy cannot get on the ball - just out muscled and dominated so there is no link play upfront. Bingham would have done better today.

Kubi not up to scratch - just trying hard.
Pain marked out of the game.

Backline move the ball too slowly still.

But above all Roux has been murdered by weemac running rampant. On there other side they haven't had much penetration through Galloway. Marking for set pieces is terrible. Their height and strength is destroying us. In fact that statement holds in general. They are winning 90 of second balls.

We're ponderous in possession.

Ironically barring one shocking pass and one time where he should have passed, Fab has been our best.

Agree with all apart from Fab who was Gash.

Disappointing and I fear that we'll be doing well to avoid the spoon this season.

Normally I'm optimistic but I'm not feeling it anymore.

Pretty fair Timmah.

I said at the start of the season looking at the Nix that they had one of the best squads, but Van Egmonds heart clearly wasn't in it. They look better now to me, but without Weemac mind you their link play suffered a lot. He destroyed us tonight. Such a quality player. Anyway point is, Nix were good and we were bad, which made for that awful performance. We know we can do better. Let's hope we can. It's been a hard 3 years now.

That's the thing though.
That obviously do have a better squad on paper - and if I felt like they'd displayed some sort of quality the loss would be a lot easier to take. But I don't actually think Nux was particularly impressive - to night or any of the other times we've played them.
Sure they've got that "individual brilliance" but it doesn't feel like it's translating at all into something from the team.
In no small part, their success against us comes down to their ability to shut us down defensively. All the times we've played them we've been a complete failure at their end.
I'm not saying that that's not worthy football, but it doesn't require any particular brilliance either.
I could stand a loss to Sydney or MC because at the end of the day they have generally been based on the other team playing excellent football - mostly.
But i haven't seen anything from Nux to particularly impress me this season.
Yet they are running circles around us.
That's why I'm so frustrated with the losses to them. They deserved their wins, but they shouldn't! If you know what i mean.

We were absolutely shite.
The only bright spots were Izzo (and he should have done better on the goal) and Monty, who was the only player who is aware that there are two sides to the pitch.
The back four were pathetic. I dont think they contested a header all game. If ball watching was an Olympic sport....we would need a new trophey cabinet. I actually think their set piece defending tonight was the worst that I have ever seen.
The goal came when Berry, under very little pressure, failed to control, pass or contest the ball.
The midfield is completely toothless and the movement is disgraceful. Only Monty escapes my criticism. Berry was woeful. Fab is absolutely terrible as a 10. His passing is poor and his decision making is worse. I've seen shop dummies move more than him when he doesn't have the ball.
Appiah is simply a poor player although he tries hard and does tackle.
Roy was poor but isolated. Pain was not at the races.
Horrible performance and a horrible team set up.
Our free kicks are an abomination as was our passing to feet.......and please Paul can you teach your players to pass fowards.....its not a differcult skill.

There was no mungrel in us..no hunger, no desire to get to the ball.
By rights we should have lost it by about 4-0 - WP blew some great chances.
Seems like the problem is psychological- it isn't that we aren't good enough. We just choke. Especially on the games we should win.
We were atrocious. Midfield....a wet tissue would have more structure and strength. Certainly wouldn't fall to bits as easily.

Much of the story of the game comes down to conceding early. Once Wellington scored, they dropped deep and blocked up the game. They set a 442 defence behind the centre circle to prevent us getting in behind.

That forced us to play through tight areas and our execution wasn't good enough, so they were able to take intercepts and capitalise on mistakes to create chances.

This deep lying defence contrasts with City and Sydney, both of whom pressed higher and in doing so allowed us chances to get in behind, which we took.

I think this is what Okon is taking about with needing patience. We've got players who can play the game but we haven't become a team for all occasions.

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
I swear In saw their heads drop after Wee Mac potted home his goal and never lift again.....and how about the corner ratio...what did Nux get 10 or 11 imagine if they scored with just a percentage of those, it could of been 4 or 5 nil.....absolutely horrible defenders, zero creative process by them, it was just a case of "f**kit, lets kick it out and prey we survive the impending corner".... Willingtun Phunux is maori for Mariners Whoo Doo Team of 2016/17

Im starting to think that Paolo isnt all that his cracked up to be , I seem to remember Mossy changing lineups every fkn week , some that made no sense at all...not 100 % sure we will get another spoon, but the odds are looking good
