Good first half.
Good structure, good patience and good movement on and off the ball.
Very pleasing.

I`m going to go out on a limb here & agree with WOMBAT`s previous posts.
I don`t see the point in bringing trialists & YL players into these matches when the object is to get the first team match fit.
We`ve lost a few games due to rain so these matches are really important to get the first team ready.
Bringing in numerous trialists, at this stage, seems pointless.
As for the Youth team, they should be having their own trial games to get them ready & be integrated with the first team during training sessions.
Every point in the A League is prescious.
We can`t afford to give the other teams a head start because we`re not match fit. :soapbox:

If we did that then our first team would have played 3 games in the space of 8 days (Roar, Olympic FC, Jets) with a pretty significant amount of travel involved and a far higher risk of injuries that may have cost us precious points during the season.

I would rather trial players during pre-season games so that in the (hopefully unlikely) event that we lose players due to injury during the season we know what our options are and how well they get along with key players like Monty and Reddy.

An impressive hit out from the Mariners; the pity is that they didn’t take the win which their football, especially in the first half, deserved. An inexperienced line-up of youth players and trialists with a bit of steel from Monty and Reddy were generally superior to an almost full strength Jets.
In the first half Birghitti had to make five saves to Reddy’s one; in the second half the Mariners allowed the Jets back into it but then finished with a late flurry and almost got the winner from Montgomery.
Monty dominated proceedings the whole game, a real captain’s knock. Trifiro showed quite amazing close skills and will be a force in the upcoming A League season. Of the young players Liam Rose looks like a real prospect, perhaps the eventual replacement for Hutch? Michael Neill impressed too, and will be a very good player when he learns how and when to cross the ball. Two more centre backs, Poscoliero and Cairncross, were trialled as Moss tries to fill the gaps in depth at the back. Poscoliero, who has spent time in Italy, looked good on the ball and Cairncross, who played for Sydney a couple of years back, both did OK, lots of composure in their play, but whether they have the goods for the A League only Mossy can say.
Travis Major, a known NSWPL player, had a run at centre forward, he had an impressive shot saved in the first half, and looked willing but perhaps lacking in technique. He might, though, be one of the NSWPL players that Moss can turn into something more useful.
Of the imports, Vernes, on in the first half, showed some nice touches, and good running off the ball; while Mané, who came on after an hour, hardly saw the ball before exploding into life late on with a superb run and cross down the right. He has good tight skills and is very quick.
Marcos Flores came on for the Jets in the second half but was almost anonymous.
Moss will be pleased with this hit out; the structure and composure was excellent in the first half. Clearly many of the young players are being schooled in the Mariners way. We should have scored from a couple of chances in the first half but in the second we were pretty toothless. Defensively, considering the inexperience at the back, we did well; we looked like we knew what we were doing. Our ability to swarm the ball carrier often paid dividends; the Mariners were very quick to regroup whenever danger threatened. The improvement continues.
Oh, and that low life, Griffiths, could so easily have been given a straight red for a spiteful tackle from behind on Liam Rose. I think the referee gave the yellow because it was a 'friendly' game

I was at the game and had these thoughts on a few players.
- Liam Rose looked really good on and off the ball. You could hear the Jets players calling out his name when he had the ball.
- Trifiro really is the real deal. We looked a different team without him.
- The team looked tired in the first part of the second half.
- Jeronimo is my new most disliked Jets player. He is a twat.
- Speaking of twats, Newcastle looked better without sackwacker.
- Mane looked like he needs service as he cannot provide decent service to anyone else. He wont create but could be an outlet after someone creates the chance.
- Vernes looks the goods.

That was a much better performance and we didn't look afraid for a change.

Vernes is quality. We looked better without Hutch as we moved the ball much quicker.

Reddy 8. Great game.
Neill 6. Great engine but still very rough. Completely out of position when Scum nearly scored in 1st half after Pasco gave the ball away. However, I believe he will make the grade.
Pacoliero 7. Pretty solid debut.
Carncross 6. Also solid but passing needs to improve.
Morton 5. Good engine but no quality.
Slater 6. Some good stuff but I can't see him making the grade.
Rose 6.5. Mixed bag but has good feet.
Monty 8. Real captains knock. Great game but should have scored the winner after lovely jinking run.
Vernes 8. Maybe he will be the player of the season. Looks a class above.
Trif 7. Along with Vernes looked like our most skilled player. Faded but still a very good game.
Major 7. Looks a good prospect.

A patchwork squad against what is close to the Jets starting 11 did a fine job. The defense and midfield look well drilled. The passing looked quicker and sharper than I remember last pre-season. (I could be wrong)
I'm feeling confident we'll be competitive and difficult to beat, but what we need is more teeth in attack.
We need a Big, Bad Center Forward™ .

think Matt Simon at his peak would have created havoc!

  • 3 games in 8 days rotating a first team squad isn`t that tough & travelling to Brisbane, twice & then to Mudgee is nothing like what we have have experienced in the past.
  • With a 1st team squad of 24, a full youth team in reserves Mossy & a massive off-season I think Mossy should have a pretty good idea of all the contingencies by now.
  • As for the injuries, that`s a risk we take in any game we play. I`m sure Tim Knight does a full fitness assessment on each player along with a risk assessment before a player is allowed to begin their pre-season games.
  • I like the idea that you rocognise about how players "get along" with other key players. I would rather use the pre-season games to build the understanding between players prior to the competition starting. We have new players in Vernes & Mane that will need time to build some combinations if we are to get the full benefits of their talents. Players like Bosnar, Trifiro, Sim etc. will benefit from a full preseason preparation also.

Agreed. Mane looks capable of making useful penetrating runs and getting behind the defences. His vision looks good. The rest of the team needs to be in position to leverage off his distribution. Sadly, I don't think we have a 'Berisha-type' player that could benefit. Trifiro looks the most likely, even though he's a midfielder. I suspect most of our goals this season will be coming from midfielders, as I don't rate the rest of our forwards.

I didn't see any Scum fans on the coverage..... any of them actually there? Or have they given up already.
