Pre-Season Games - HAL10

We looked terrible on field. I know this is early days preseason for us, but doesn't feel like it's early days before season starts.

I have to say Duke looked a class above (then rest of Mariners). I didn't watch close enough to see how Mane played, hope he did well. Kim also.

Damien Duff looks great. Hope he stays fit for them, really exciting player. Unfortunately he has to use all his patience and skill to hold up the ball just so the younger guys can keep up.

Great initiative that our club streamed this match though.

1st Half was atrocious. Yes experiment line up but a little to experimental for me.

Don't mind the idea of Rose having a go at right back thought it might help his finishing as when gets to the top of the box will be on his preferred shooting side to arc it into the corner.

Seemed MC pressed the crap out of us in the 1st half & decided to take it easier on us in the 2nd as they wanted their backs to have something to do.

Way to many holes down MC left our right defence. Gap between cernak & Rose was massive with no Mid covering. They were having a field day.

Mane seemed alright to me, gets in good positions but gets a little excited when it's time to take the players on & sometimes had a poor (very poor ) first touch but at other times showed composure & an ability to cut the ball back to the top of the box (no one was working with him there to do something with it but I think that was more to do with who was playing.

Sim as I've said before is NOT a LB. He is a winger

Definitely a stronger side in the 2nd half.

Hard to tell who was who sometimes as watching on a Ipad mini didn't make it that easy.

It was an interesting experience at Oakes Oval, though with Rugby coming next week the crowd of 4,000 may have just been looking for a day out in this northern rivers city. Worth the 6 hour round trip, just to see our boys on the park again.
I wouldn't read too much into the result, and even the performance at this stage.
The trialists all looked useful. Mann is not the answer, yet. Vernes and Kalik looked lively, as did Michael Neill.

Sorry, the action was too far away and light too uneven for photos.

Thanks Kev.
Good report.
I found Mossy's comments perplexing or maybe he is planning a move into politics after Football?

Was a rather painful watch. 2nd half definitely better, with some decent lead up work to the forwards. But the finishing was abysmal. I really worry about our ability to score goals. I beg to differ over Duke's performance. Apart from one good cross from him that we should have scored from he was largely ineffectual. Not necessarily his fault, as support was limited, and his time on the park also limited. I get the feeling that he uses all his energy chasing hopeless causes, and when it is time to be sharp near the box he is poorly positioned. Need to see more darting runs in areas where it counts, not near the halfway line.

Overall, no one stood out as a potential leader or match winner. Early days. In Mossy we trust.

Great stream though. Congrats to the organisers.

this also tells me a lot about the game:
"The Mariners on their part rung in 10 changes
during the game, with only first choice ‘keeper
Liam Reddy seeing out the time."

I'm pleased we're playing roar today, need high quality opposition to keep stepping it up

theoretically we should get done but be a good defensive test. i didn't see the MC game but despite the possession we managed to hold them out which sounds like was a good sign, unless a deceptive stat of course and was just quality keeping, as i say didn't see the game

I think it is a good sign considering how many more pre-season games than us MC have played, including games in Europe.

I'm looking forward to the team sheet more than anything. Will he go with a strong line up. We played a very young 11 against MC in sections of that game.

Our top priority here is the FFA cup match. How that affects the starting line up against the Roar today, I don't know. I suspect if this was just a one off trial match then we would see a different line up to the one that will appear today.

A good hit out; much improved from last week. Rose continued at right back, young Neill on the left; Vernes was on the bench, Mané was not. Monty and Hutch were in midfield, Anderson and Bosnar the centre backs, no sign of the trialist. Brisbane was without the influential Broich and McKay, and has to live without Berisha, but considering they are much deeper into their pre season than the Mariners I think Phil Moss will be quite satisfied.
Defensively we were pretty solid, only individual errors, notably a horrible double poor pass by Bosnar gave us cause for alarm. We were very comfortable until caught napping by Henrique, late on. It was Brisbane’s only real shot of the game, Reddy was furious, but that may have been simply because we had a NYL defender, Nick Petrillo, on the field.
Brisbane looked ominous early with a smothering press but the Mariners settled quickly and began to play a decent game of their own. On fifteen minutes, Cernak, who played much better than I expected, had a terrific snap volley just over. Duke missed a great chance when clear from a long ball and the Mariners, although the raids were sporadic looked the more likely to score. One super quick long passing move on the break found Duke out wide but he couldn’t quite get the cross in. In the closing minutes of the half an excellent long ball from Reddy found Duke on the right, the ball came to Cernak who created enough confusion in the Roar defence for Fitzgerald, who had replaced the injured Kim, to score.
All the Mariners subs got a game, except the keeper, and we looked untroubled until Henrique equalised. The only other threat was a sharp shot from Petratos which Reddy plucked as if taking a six-pack from the top shelf. Some of the approach work was quite good, albeit patchy. A fine move down the right – most of our good work was on the right hand side – had Cernak putting in an excellent cross although Brisbane cleared.
It was of course, a pre season game; there were plenty of errors, poor decisions and misplaced passes but the team work and effort has certainly gone up a couple of notches. Cernak was lively and did well, but, Vernes, who replaced him in the second half made little impact. Reddy has clearly worked on his foot work while Duke has not. Montgomery was our best; his tandem with Hutch gave us a decent platform. I expected more from Caceres when he came on for Hutch. Young Michael Neill had a decent shift without banging down the door for a first team A League place. Kim sadly, predictably, seemed to fall over for no reason and limped off after about half an hour; we were better with Fitzgerald.

Thanks. Quite a good and fair summation.
