Pre-Season Games - HAL10

Other thoughts - Mane had some powerful shots early, is fast, strong and agile. maybe lacking some fitness still.
Overall no one is having a bad game. despite the goals. More later

There's pre-season and then there's getting pantsed. This is veering wildly towards the latter.

Our defence is shocking. CBs in particular. Monty as usual: all heart and Caceres as usual: all football.

Olympic's defense was pretty good. Either they had all the answers or we had none in attack. It seemed that we were able to get into the attacking zone many times but were not able to finish off.
Mane looked threatening but at times was walking. Perhaps his match fitness isn't quite there yet.
There is a lack of anticipation when they are attacking around the box, but I think that will come with more game time together.
Matty Sim, well, for every 3 good moves he made ha made a mistake. Yes, goal scorer, I know.I reckon he covered more ground than anyone else on the field.
When Kim came off it looked as though he was clutching his left side.
Hutch was a General.
Mickey Neill continues to impress.
Mathew Nash was warming up with the boys before the game and I half expected to see him start, but it didn't happen. Olympic's keeper was subbed about the 65min. mark because he seemed to have pulled a shoulder muscle or something. So has Nash had a game for us yet?
Anyway, it was good to see the yellow go around again, and I *do* like my new 2015 supporters shirt. Sharp, but, hmmm, I do need to work on the weight as the kit is very body hugging.
So, beaten but *not* pantsed.

Ouch that hurt...

I thought Mane was great. Was able to turn with ease. Did everything but score.

This was Caceres first time wearing the No. 10 and I recon he definitely earn't the the N0. 10 position. Was much better that Kim and looks supper fit.

2 of their goals came from corners so I think the defence looked worse than they were but Boznar made a few mistakes. At one point he made mistake cleaning up another mistake.o_O

Roux was solid and so was Neill. Rose is going to have some competition this year. Monty and hutch were good.

Sim was ok sometime but woeful in others. Fitz was a workhorse.

Overall I think we were pretty unlucky. Yes we have a heap to work on but not panicking yet.

Hard to know what to write.

We can play football but we make life so hard for ourselves with our set up.

We played that game with no number 9 but with Mane as our striker who spent almost all the game as a left winger....so to say Olympic defenders had a picnic would be an understatement.

We also played with no control in the centre of the park, apart from Monty who was very good.

The back 4 were suspect. Ando talks well and has improved his composure on the ball but like Bosnar doesn't close down when the pressure is on. Neill is ok but is a long long way from starting 11. Only Roux looked the required quality.
Midfield is f**king toothless. Sim is not starting 11 although he has improved heaps and will be useful when someone is injured. Only Monty is of the required standard. Hutcho was ok and didn't lose the ball but he simply doesn't create anything.
So we play with no forwards (or 1 winger) a midfield with the grunt of a Yaris and a gormless back four.
We could get smashed this season.

Points of note....

Matty Simon was there and would have given us a spearhead.
Mane was our best player but is overweight and will be spectacular after he gets match fit.
Caceras looked ok when he came on and we looked better before Kim was subbed.

Reddy 6.
Roux 7.5
Ando 6
Eddy 5.5
Neill 5.5
Hutch 6.
Monty 8.
Sim 6.
Kim 7.
Fitz 5.5
Mane 8

Great not no be pantsed by a non league side!
Hutch was ok but achieved nothing.
I can see the quality in Neill but he is a liability at FB at this stage..

Found out from the club last night that there will be an intra-team game on at Fan day this Saturday.

Bit of news on Duke too. He has a bit of a back problem. Not training full on this week. Should be back to full training next week and hopes to play against the scum.

They have just come off a full season where they were runners up in the Grand Final 2 weeks ago. Match fit, and with all the tactics and anticipation of a good playing unit. They may play in NSW NPL 1 but they are definitely not bunnies.
Better to have a pre-season against a hardened unit like this than another internal softie.

Hey what was the go with our formation last night? Fitz and Mane seemed to stay very forward with Sim sitting off the front line and not out wide where you expect a winger to be. Sort of floated around behind the front line where you expect the classic CAM to play. Didn't really look like our usual 4231. Anyone else notice this?

standard stuff from 4231 bro. Wingers don't always play in the line, usually one will drift in to provide numbers in midfield and provide space for fullbacks to overlap, central strikers look for space, mane seems to really like left wing, but he got a lot of hold up ball-to-feet passes centrally from hutch, e.g. the turn and shoot at the top of the box that resulted in a corner. it used to be weemac that did the midfield overloading but it generally alternates depending on where the ball is and where defenders are

Central Coast Mariners lost the Club’s final pre-season friendly ahead of Hyundai A-League season 10 to NSW NPL outfit Sydney Olympic at Pluim Park in Lisarow on Tuesday evening, though despite the 3-1 defeat Head Coach Phil Moss believes his men remain on track for the start of the new campaign.
Up until last night the Mariners had enjoyed a strong pre-season in terms of results, gaining draws with Hyundai A-League rivals Melbourne City (Lismore), Brisbane Roar (Brisbane) and Newcastle Jets (Mudgee), as well as having advanced to the round of eight of the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup courtesy of wins over South Coast Wolves and Olympic FC.

While the result against Sydney Olympic undoubtedly failed to flatter the yellow and navy, Moss said he and his coaching staff could take plenty of positives away from the encounter against the grand Greek club, including improvements from numerous individuals as well as the additional competitive minutes placed into the squad’s legs.

“It sounds strange given the scoreline, but I thought we played some of the best football that we’ve played in pre-season given what we went out there to do,” Moss said after the game. “I am not happy with the result, of course, but I am happy with the process with players sticking to the way that we want to play.”

“Some of the football was very easy on the eye, and we threatened their goal on numerous occasions – I thought we could have been 3-0 up by half time. Their ‘keeper kept them in the game first half, (John) Hutchinson hit the post, (Nick) Fitzgerald had a great chance, Malick Mané had a great chance, and I think Malick looked threatening every time he went forward.”

“It was just some sloppy moments in defence in the second half, particularly from set pieces, that I am not happy with. That’s something that we’ll be tightening up before Newcastle at home in round 1, and our transition to defence needs to tighten up a bit too.”

After a goalless first 45 which the Mariners dominated, Sydney Olympic broke the deadlock shortly after the break when Yianni Spyrakis prodded the ball into the back of Liam Reddy’s net from close range.

Mariner Nick Montgomery nearly restored parity shortly after Spyrakis’ opener with a cracking strike from outside the box which struck the crossbar. And less than a minute later, Anthony Caceres’ curling goal bound shot was headed off the line and out for a corner.

Dimi Hatzimouratzis added a second for Olympic in the 56th minute with a sweet finish, before Christopher Godoy-Bascur made the score 3-0 to the visitors in the 65th minute with a header direct from a corner.

Matt Sim reduced the arrears for the Mariners 20 minutes before full time when he capitalised on strong build up play down the left by Michael Neill and Mané.

“At the end of the day we lost the game at both ends of the field tonight,” Moss said. “If we had taken our chances it would have been over by half time and if we hadn’t defended so sloppily at set pieces, they wouldn’t have scored.”

“So it was one of those games, but there’s certainly a lot to take out of it moving forward.”

The Mariners also played an internal match mixing Foxtel National Youth League players with first team squad members at the Club’s training ground on Tuesday morning.

“I am delighted that nearly everyone in the squad got 90 minutes today apart from Kim (Seung-yong) who gave us a good, solid 55 minutes (in Lisarow) before he copped a knock – he’s fine and he looked very sharp, particularly in the first half,” he said.

“Malick Mané stepped up today, and in the earlier game Josh Rose looked good and Glen Trifiro did very well, so there’s a lot of players putting their hand up for round 1 and it’s going to be a tough selection meeting for that first round,” Moss concluded.

Central Coast Mariners will hold the Club’s annual Fan Day at Gosford’s Central Coast Stadium this Saturday 3 October from 11:30am. Join in the fun and festivities for free as the Mariners get set for Hyundai A-League season 10.

Central Coast Mariners 1 (Sim 71')
Sydney Olympic 3 (Spyrakis 47', Hatzimouratzis 56', Godoy-Bascur 65')
Pluim Park, Lisarow
