Pre-Season Games - HAL10

I didn't see any Scum fans on the coverage..... any of them actually there? Or have they given up already.
Yeah there were a couple behind me bagging out the Jets players all game. They were even indoctrinating their young kid who was hoping for Virgilli to trip someone.

some insight into Mossy's thoughts:
" A Central Coast Mariners outfit blending senior
professionals, emerging talents and ambitious
trialists earned a 0-0 draw with Newcastle Jets
in an A-League pre-season clash in Mudgee on
Saturday.
Having defeated Brisbane's Olympic FC 3-1 in
the Westfield FFA Cup on Tuesday, Mariners
boss Phil Moss opted to leave all bar goalkeeper
Liam Reddy from his mid-week starting eleven
at home for the trip to western NSW, in favour of
giving vital match minutes to a range of squad
members needing game time leading in to the
start of the season proper.
Steered around the park by senior professionals
Liam Reddy, Nick Montgomery and Glen Trifiro,
the mainly young Mariners proved to be highly
capable and competitive against Phil Stubbins’s
side, and indeed dominated the first 45 minutes
at Glen Willow Regional Sporting Stadium.
Trialist Travis Major led the line well, and it was
the Blacktown City Demons man who tested
Newcastle custodian Mark Birighitti twice early in
the first half.
Moreover, the tireless Montgomery forced
Birighitti into action from long range as the
Mariners looked the more likely team to break
the deadlock.
Newcastle made some personnel changes after
the interval which produced a shift in attacking
momentum, and its best opportunity came
through Argentine attacker Jeronimo Neumann,
who's header from David Carney’s precise cross
flew wide of Reddy's left post.
Montgomery had a late chance to win the game
for the yellow and navy when he won the ball in
the box and beat a couple of Jets defenders.
However, the former Sheffield United man slipped
slightly at the wrong moment, and ultimately
pushed his curling shot just wide of the target.
Moss was delighted with the performances of his
charges against an experienced Jets outfit,
declaring: "Today was a great opportunity on
several counts.
"It was a great opportunity for some match
minutes for some senior players - Richi Vernes
and Malick Mane got some valuable minutes.
"Nick Montgomery and Liam Reddy obviously
played out the 90, and some of the younger boys
that are pushing to play first team football this
year really impressed.
"The likes of Hayden Morton, Tom Slater, Liam
Rose - who was outstanding in the middle of the
park - Michael Neill again, and a few of our
youth team boys got a chance today.
"For the team that I put out there today to
match it and I think dominate the first 45 against
what I thought was close to a full strength Jets
team was outstanding. Overall, I was delighted
with the exercise."
Moss stressed that while the Mariners line-up
against Newcastle in Mudgee may be viewed by
many as experimental, the performances of his
players at Glen Willow means that true
competition is beginning to emerge within the
squad for places for the round one game against
Newcastle Jets at Central Coast Stadium on
Saturday 11 October.
“Let’s use Mickey Neill as an example,” Moss
said. “Mickey is a fantastic footballer and a
fantastic kid, and now he’s put together two
very good appearances against Brisbane Roar
and Newcastle.”
“Today he was up against a very experienced
player in Jeronimo Neumann, and up against
Brisbane he came up against some very
experienced players as well.
“So he’s one of a number of players who has
now equipped himself very well, and he like
others he is showing that he’s ready to play first
team football.
“That’s great for me because it gives me options
and keeps players fighting for their spot and
working hard.”
The yellow and navy will play the Young
Socceroos behind-closed-doors this week as
they continue to prepare for Hyundai A-League
season ten. "

Agreed. Mane looks capable of making useful penetrating runs and getting behind the defences. His vision looks good. The rest of the team needs to be in position to leverage off his distribution. Sadly, I don't think we have a 'Berisha-type' player that could benefit. Trifiro looks the most likely, even though he's a midfielder. I suspect most of our goals this season will be coming from midfielders, as I don't rate the rest of our forwards.

I don't know that they need to be Berisha-type-players though... A couple of times both Duke and Fitsy have gotten close, I think it's just that they're still getting to know each other and that there's that bit where Mane has won a number of the sort of balls that you would've expected most A-league plauyers to lose, down the side, so his crosses and passes have been even more unexpected. There were a couple on Saturday that were crossed into a completely empty area in front of goal where, really, we should have had at least one man making the run. I can't remember who, but someone was close, I think it was clear that they just really didn't expect it.
Give it a quarter-season and let's see, I suspect they'll start making those runs when they realise that it might actually be feasible.

It is only on reflection that I realise how good Mane can be. Twice, one on the left, one on the right, he got to the by-line and crossed, as has been said, across the goal. The second run, on the right was extraordinary. He made the Jets defenders seem like schoolboys; pace, skill and strength. He knew as soon as he got the ball that he was going to beat both of them. If only Sasho had been playing...

Making that run is always a gamble. Players learn not to gamble if they're not seeing winning cards. If Mane delivers more winning cards more often, players will spend the chips to get to the goal area to try to snaffle something.

It's a learned behaviour - you learn it's either worth it or not, and that shapes your next action.

Does anyone know the lineup from Wednesday's game against the Young Socceroos?

With a 5-1 loss I'd really want to hope it was the NYL side + trialists...

Zero updates from the club didn't help. The jets played in our home ground
yesterday and gave updates on everything. They won 2-1 as well.

That's a hammering  Hope Mossy is just experimenting. With less than 2 weeks to Round 1 that's not the sort of result we want to see.
On that note, what or how many more trial/pre-season games have we got lined up, does anyone know?

Unless the club announces extra games during the week that was the last one.

I really hope that wasn't a full strength side. I have a felling Moss was experimenting with that game because it was very secretive leading up to and after this game. Was never actually published by the club that was even on.

Not really happy with our preseason and this might mean we will have a slow start but we have the fist two games at home against what I think are the bottom two team in the Jets and the Nix. I think we'll be right right before we play WSW in the third round.

Fear not; I can't remember which pre season it was (I need help from an anorak; or Kev :innocent:) but Arnie led us unbeaten against a host of NSWPL sides and then we went to NZ (Welly or Auckland?) and got stuffed 4-1. We either reached the GF that year, or took out the Premiership.
