Go Marvin, only an average A-league defender? That's funny.
There Is not one a-league club that wouldn't turf one of their existing centre backs to have Lucas.

You Muppet.

He will go to Western Sydney if he plays in the A-League, he will be nothing special.

Ill let his performances finish this argument.

What about the Olyroos captain?

It must be Dutchy's last year (maybe) & Hutch wouldn't be considered first choice anymore especially next year so long term Olly would have to be right up there.

Sorry, fact is he didn't rhyme.
But yeah, agreed, he's the only other real contender I think. Though The idea of Kwas gives me a good giggle.

Fox Sports reporting that Brad Porter has retired due to ongoing injury problems. Smitta was a real club man. The guy was cursed by his versatility and affability, rarely getting game time in his preferred position/s, instead playing where needed by his gaffer.

All the best to you Brad!! Good luck with your coaching!!

CENTRAL Coast Mariners have late this afternoon granted captain Alex Wilkinson permission to fly to Korea Republic at the request of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC for a period of seven days.

No deal has currently been reached between Central Coast Mariners and the table-topping K-League club for the transfer of Wilkinson.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC have expressed an interest in acquiring Wilkinson’s services, and the Mariners are committed to allowing the popular, long-serving defender the opportunity to discuss personal terms and decide whether a move to the K-League may be of interest to him and his family.

Wilkinson is due to return from Korea Republic to the Central Coast on Thursday 19 July, 2012.

LONG-SERVING Central Coast Mariners utility Brad Porter, 25, today confirmed his retirement from professional football due to injury.

Porter, who made his Hyundai A-League debut in round 12 of the 2006/07 season, spent over six years on the Mariners roster, making 90 competitive appearances for the yellow and navy.

Porter’s first competitive match for his beloved Mariners was against Perth Glory in the 2006 Pre-Season Cup – a game that ended 2-1 in favour of Central Coast thanks to strikes from Stewart Petrie and Adam Kwasnik.

“It’s been a tough decision to make to have to retire from the game, but at the end of the day I did the injury nearly two years ago now and in that time it’s been extremely frustrating trying to come back and having setbacks,” Porter said.

“The way I look at is that I’ve been a professional at the Club for close to seven years and there are a lot of young kids and a lot of people out there that would give up a lot to have done that.”

“I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved at this Club. To have been here from basically day one and to have seen the growth of the Club both on the pitch, and building the supporter base and the community support has been unbelievable.”

While injury has cruelled Porter’s chances of prolonging his playing days, the former Australian Institute of Sport scholar acknowledged the time had come to listen to his body.

Porter will now focus his energies on becoming a coach, and plans to utilise the networks he has built to reach the football goals he set himself growing up.

“Even when I was fully fit I had dreams that when I retired I was going to get into coaching,” he said. “I guess it’s just come a little earlier than I expected.”

“Everyone has goals and dreams growing up as to what they want to achieve in football, I still have those dreams and goals. I guess now I am standing on a touchline instead of out there with the boots on.”

“I’ve spoken to Arnie (Graham Arnold) and he’s more than happy to have me in, so I’m going to be in and around the squad. I’ll be like a sponge, soaking in information and I guess looking at things at a different perspective.”

Current Central Coast Mariners Head Coach, Graham Arnold, said it is a ‘tragedy’ for a 25-year-old to have to call time on his career because of injury.

“Brad has always been highly rated at the Mariners, and unfortunately due to injury over the two years that I’ve been here, I probably didn’t get to see the best of Brad,” Arnold said.

“When I first came here Brad was a young player that I was looking forward to working with. We wish Brad as a guy who is a Mariner through and through the best for the future.”

Central Coast Mariners General Manager – Football, Lawrie McKinna, signed Porter to his first professional contract and today echoed Arnold’s sentiment.

“When we first signed Brad he was a young, quiet boy and in the last five or six years he has grown to become an important member of the Mariners family,” McKinna said.

“Brad always gave 100 per cent in training and on the park and I believe his strength was his fitness, which made him adaptable to many positions.”

Porter was an especially integral member of the Club’s first team from 2008 to 2010. During this time he started 43 matches in the Hyundai A-League and made six appearances in the 2009 version of the AFC Champions League – Central Coast’s first foray into Asia’s premier Club competition

Poor Porter - a great servant for the clubs and injury aside his best days were ahead. It's great Arnie is going to let him learn from him and I hope he has an enjoyable and successful career in coaching.

Wilko...need to wait and see, there's a paper-thin chance he won't go. It's wise of him to go and check everything out first and he should do what's right for him and his family, whatever that turns out to be. He'll have his Mariner-family support behind him all the way. So tributes later if need be.

Should Wilko go that means there's 2 more spots up for grabs - and money to spend on the spots. Wonder what Arnie is thinking...
I'd be looking DM and CB, we have enough depth everywhere else. I suspect Anderson is the planned CB but some depth there is now required, he's young and will get cards etc

I was told that Anderson had dislocated his shoulder during the break and that he won't be available for the first half of the comp.

Dam,
Would not be surprised to see a visa spot being used soon for a defender.

But who would it be, I would like to see a defender from Npower league 1/2 or a lower division Spanish player.

Im sure it would be possible and a good solution.

Bugger ......... Matty Ryan on trial at Spurs who are after a keeper ....

Mariners keeper set on earning his Spurs

AUSTRALIA'S best young goal keeper Mathew Ryan could make the switch of a lifetime after accepting an offer to trial for English team Tottenham Hotspur.

The 20-year-old has won back-to-back young player of the year awards and was named as the A-league's best goal keeper this season.

Ryan will be given a week to impress at White Hart Lane, London, and if he can convince Tottenham Hotspur's new manager, Andre Vilas Boas, of his worth it would mark a huge step for the one-time Plumpton junior.

It is thought that the Mariners would be seeking between $500,000 and $1 million for their goal keeper who, despite his relatively modest 181-centimetre frame, is widely considered as the long-term successor to Mark Schwarzer for the Socceroos.

Tottenham have endured ongoing goalkeeping problems and last year looked to find a short-term solution to their woes by signing American veteran Brad Friedel, who will turn 42 years old at the end of the upcoming English Premier League season.
While Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini are also on Tottenham's books, Gomes has proven himself to be erratic while Cudicini will be 39 in September and has seldom been considered a first-team option.

Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull said he was happy for Ryan.

''It is a magnificent opportunity and experience for Mathew to have a look at a top premier league club,'' Turnbull said. "Tottenham move into their new training facility on the first of August so it will be a great experience for him.''

''Our stated policy as a club is to reward Australian youth. 'Arnie' [Mariners coach Graham Arnold] has embraced this policy enthusiastically and it has got results on the field; it has got results off the field and it proves that the Mariners can provide a career path for young Australians who want a career in football.''

However, it is not only Tottenham who are interested in the young star. Premiership sides QPR, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion have all contacted Ryan's management to express an interest in having him train with them. However, the Mariners are waiting for the formal paperwork to be lodged by those clubs first.

Central Coast knocked back a trial offer for English Championship side Burnley two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Ryan's former Mariners' teammate Mustafa Amini has made a promising start to life in Germany with his new club Borussia Dortmund.

Amini only arrived with the Bundesliga champions a few weeks ago but he has earned a full 90-minute hit-out against fourth-division side SV Meppen and scored in a 2-1 victory.

That's it - fire Clarky! hehe

Keep an ear out for new signings it seems...

Yeah - we might think our signings are done and dusted but I can see us losing 2 or 3 and gaining 3 before we are done.

If Wilko goes and with Patrick likely to retire at the end of the season we need a quality 2-3 year replacement to build our defence on. The same goes for Maty's replacement (if he goes). Needs to be solid to at least challenge Justin for the #1.

Good luck to the guys if they go. Wilko deseves his payday and Maty has the potential to develop into a great keeper.

We lost Rostyn and Matty along the spine last season and have only now replaced Matty with Mile and it is asking a lot of Caceres to fill Rostyn's shoes. The bad thing is if Wilko and Maty go and aren't sufficiently replaced it could be a long year and an awful ACL campaign. The flip side of course is that quality replacements along the spine could set us up for a great year.
