I quite like the idea of having Mile with us . . .i remember when he was being shown around Bluetongue a few years ago . .In Lawries last season I think . .and i was very happy to be linked with him.
And! it will be good to have another MILE at the club!

Mile Sterjovski agrees terms with Central Coast

Central Coast Mariners can this morning confirm media speculation that former Qantas Socceroos utility Mile Sterjovski has agreed terms with the Club on an initial one-season contract.

The experienced and highly regarded Sterjovski, 33, who represented Australia under Guus Hiddink and Mariners boss Graham Arnold at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, will arrive on the Central Coast on Monday to formalise his deal with the yellow and navy.

Having worked with Sterjovski for many years with the National Team, Arnold this morning spoke of his delight that the former LOSC Lille, FC Basel and Derby County player will link with the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League Premiers.

“I’ve known Mile for a long time and he will bring a lot of quality and experience to our squad,” Arnold said.

“He is a great guy who will fit in perfectly with the culture we have built at the Mariners.”

“Mile knows where the back of the net is and I am looking forward to him getting some goals for the Club.”

Meanwhile, Arnold said the forthcoming addition of Sterjovski to Central Coast’s roster would assist his many young players in their professional development.

“Our squad has nine Australian players under the age of 22,” he said. “Our belief is in Australian youth again at the Mariners next season and this policy has served us well in the past.”

“Mile’s experience in testing leagues overseas and with the Socceroos will help our young boys enormously.”

After Sterjovski signs the Mariners will have 22 of a possible 23 players contracted for the 2012/13 campaign. Arnold indicated he intends to leave one place open for the time being.

Sterjovski played for Wollongong, Sydney United and Parramatta in the National Soccer League before enjoying a fruitful career abroad. He returned to play for Perth Glory in the Hyundai A-League in 2009, and most recently turned out for Chinese Super League side Dalian Aerbin."

First training is this week

Lets leave Cullina out for the time being and deal with reality. Where is Sterj going to play? I'd suggest up front beside Bernie. He could be the muscle Bernie needs at this point in his career.

Stick with the midfield diamond with Tommy at the top and Hutch at DM.

You can stick to the midfield diamond - but I think that Sterj's signing also gives the option of 4-3-3

-----------------------Ryan/Pasfield-----------------------------

Bojic/Oates---Wilko/Sainsbury---Patrick/Anderson----Rose/McDonald

--------------Caceres/Pellers----Hutch/Olly---------------------

----------------------Rogic/McGlinchey--------------------------

Sterj/Troy--------------McBreen/Duke------------------Kwas/Bernie

I agree we can now play a variety of formations but we will score more goals with Mile acting as a play maker than have him wasted on the wing.

why ? our attack broke down with rojic at the top of midfield. we crashed out with a wimper.
rojic is no play maker ,but mile could be .

Meh!... I'm not a visionary. Just going on something close to what we are used to putting out on the park. If you disagree, come up with an alternative.

Caceres is the play maker its were does he fit in the formation...

I do like Pjennings ... 4 - 2 - 1 - 3 ... but swap weeMac with Caceres in the CM position and weeMac to RM...

We've signed Mile to take the penalties.

HA! Love it. That alone could have turned our season in to quite a different one.

I think Mile will be a great signing. Arnie's bang on, we do need some pedigree and quality next to our youngsters. It will help them lift and grow and if he's a good guy, I think that alone is massive. Looking forward to seeing egg on the faces of all the rival supporters on 442. Mile has not had anywhere near the level of service he will get out of Rosey, Pedj Weemac, Olly and Rogic since he's come to the HAL.

Re line up. Forget Culina. He'll go to SFC most likely. And THEN he has to get back to fitness, then earn himself a spot... Honestly, we are SO MUCH BETTER off investing in players like Caceres. It's meaningful developing these youngsters, really exciting to watch, and when we do a good job, we get a good pay day at the end too.

Re will GA change from the 442 diamond? I think some of the key reasons we would likely continue to play one are as follows.

Firstly Rose and Bojic. That shouldn't need much explanation.

Secondly, Weemac, Olly, Hutch and Rogic imo definitely suit a narrow diamond better.

Lot of mobility, speed and fitness required to best play a 433. With all due respect, I think we would be placing no small few of our players under unnecessary pressure with the demands of a 433 formation. If Bernie, Duke, Caceres and Rogic are all doing really well and coming up aces after 90 solid minutes, maybe. But young players tend to be tired out by the level of focus required to play against men in professional leagues for 90 - it's not just the physical aspects of fitness.

But I do like 433's :eek:verhead:

Good point FP - on the mental fatigue that younger players can succumb to - often before they run out of legs.

Aww I can't wait. I remember undergoing envy when Perth snapped him up when there was talk the Mariners had an interest in him too. He's performed some magic for the 'roos and is a very exciting proposition for the team.
"He is said to be taking a big pay cut to join the Mariners" is a good sign, he seems the down-to-earth nice guy type so should really add to the team bond we have going.

I still reckon the loss of Griffiths hurt last season more than losing Simon (maybe it was accumulated, one or the other could be coped with but not both..?) but without seeming to be looking for another DM I'm suspecting Arnie has his plans. A full pre-season is a useful thing, especially with an already well oiled team. It's assumed it'll be Hutch spending this pre-season mastering the DM role, and in all honesty I think he's more than up to it. Expect his best year yet.

A great point that about Mile providing and receiving the kind of service we know will come...plus a proven striker. Not to mention what he can teach and the combination play to come. Talk about a gee-up.

In terms of goal scoring one of the most important elements I see here is his partnership with Ibini. Ibini started playing regularly last season alongside Simon and as their relationship grew they started banging away the goals. When Simon left so did the relationship and the goals - we can all see how and why they worked together.
The potential is there for Mile/Ibini to be even better. Simon had gone to another level last season as a player but even still Mile is another prospect altogether. Ibini, too, is that much further along.

This has to be the strongest, most well polished team we've ever fielded. I'm champing at the bit

I agree. ANd your right DM is arguably our weakest area. But Olly can play there and we have Caceres.
Hutch can play left, Mile and kwas too. Witrh Bernie, McBreen, Duke and Hearfield. We really do have a lot of options.
And we're settled. The ream getting to work and focus together and have a proper pre season is also a big deal.

Can't wait.

it's a good point that there is decent depth. last season the depth didn't get much game time due to the fitness and form of the starting 11. maybe some mid-week friendlies could be a thought
