Player movements 2013/2014

This 'fire sale' make me wonder about the true value of the A-League Premiership\Championship. When the Club is performing so well, a cert for the Top 6, and hot favourites for the double, what does this potential mass exodus tell the faithful fans?

The Club and the competition is only a vehicle for training footballers to enhance their careers overseas?
The Club's fans are immaterial, because the competition they come to watch is irrelevant?

I have thoroughly enjoyed this season up until Christmas. But now, even though I fully understand the motives of the players and the Club, I'm left with a feeling of 'Why bother?'

It leaves me with a sense that all Arnie's words about team mateship and club loyalty are just so much hot air. Or rather, only valid for the first half of the season.

Call me old fashioned, but I detest the mid season transfer window.

Mr Celery this post isn't necessarily directed at you

Correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of people seem to be constantly taking this out on the Club? Does anyone know the facts surrounding the trials? I would love to know more if you do.

As was detailed in Lawrie's response in the Mat Ryan thread, the Club's hands are tied. I can only infer, but i would think that other players have clauses that allow them to trial, mid season or not. The Club obviously cannot refuse as they would breach the contract.

I would also guess the Club had previously attempted to sign the Youth on longer deals, only for the players and their agents to refuse to. The Club cannot be faulted for that.

I would suggest for everyone to stop pointing the finger at the Club and question the motives of other parties. If the players don't want to play for my Club, then so be it. If they play for another HAL club they are dead to me. If they have ambitions to play overseas i wish them well, but it wont be my dollars going toward their earnings. I'd rather pay to watch players play for the shirt and the region. Even if that doesn't bring silverware.

It's obviously disappointing to be a such a great position and potentially have it all taken away through transfers. However, with success comes publicity and the economics of the Australian football market will always (for a long time yet anyway) mean it will be seen a bargain marketplace.

Given this, i see in it's simplest form two options:
1. Continue to attract the talented youth we are currently and continue with our success. This certainly brings risk being poaching mid/post season; or
2. Block all transfers and let it be known to players they must finish their duty here, and put up with mediocre performances on players who don't want to play for the club.

You might ask, what about other HAL clubs? Other HAL clubs have been no where near as successful as us, other clubs don't have the amount of quality youth in their first team and other clubs currently aren't in a position to be potentially self sustainable.

Our club will continue to run like this in the near future, so if people aren't comfortable with that there are 9 other HAL and an abundance of state league teams to follow.

So i say, either get on board a support a growing Club with huge ambitions (who will cycle through players), or continue with the threats not to turn up and be left with no representation in any national sporting competition.

We cannot have the best of both worlds

The constant blame on the Club which does nothing to help it progress, so i suggest stopping the continual spreading of innuendo and possible untruths and thank the players for their contribution. Our energy should be focused on who the club might unearth as our potential next 1/2 season youth marquee superstar on our quest for continental success. Who is on board?

Gotta say I'm feeling pretty positive about the way things are going regardless of who leaves (until Arnie does). The team is showing more than ever that the team is bigger than any individual and keeps winning. Plus there's still potential players yet to get a chance who may prove as good or better

Even a year ago I'd have been concerned, and was re: Simo & Griff going. But now it feels like the club can take it in its stride and impress regardless.
As I said in another thread (above)...

This'll all make for an interesting doco that's for sure!

All good points universalmind. However, I don't get a strong feeling of anyone blaming the Club so much. The Club has never pretended to be anything other than a 'football factory'. The Centre of Excellence, its development pathways, and Arnie's "my job is to make millionaires" comments are ample evidence of that. What I am hearing is a strong feeling of disappointment at seeing a magnificent team potentially decimated mid-season, and the frustration of not being able to continue to see the talents of our best players 'in the flesh' for at least a full season. Plus concern that such a mass departure of our top players mid-season will cripple our Premiership\Championship run. As I said, I understand the situation and the motives, but it still does not make it a pleasant fan experience.

I do not necessarilly see the prospect of the 3 youngsters going as a great problem. The club attracts good quality young players hoping to make it by quality scouting, good coaching and facilitating their moves when it is time to move upwards and onwards overseas. This is a good niche for the club to occupy, being small and not having massive financial backing and it has proved remarkably successful. I imagine very soon we will not have to scout the talented youth in this country they will be beating a path to our door.

I think if we can get 350k for Bernie we should grab it. His position is reasonably covered. Similarly for Matt.
Tom I think should spend another year here to further develop his skills and possibly more importantly his stamina. He will be the hardest to replace, but 600k would be nice compensation.

Loyal servants at the end of their careers like Hutch should be allowed to collect their golden handshakes in Asia with all our blessings.

The important part is then to use this cash to keep other players like Glinch, Pedj and Ollie from being seduced by the filthy cash of other A-League clubs. If we lost them that is when I would become disillusioned.

CCM is building a club and organisation for the long term. Ask yourselves what have the likes of Sydney, the Scum and Brisbane got if their millionaire backers go bad or pull out.

This club has been the most consistently successful in the A-League despite having the smallest population base/following and the smallest budget. We are still punching above our weight and the philosophy of the Club enables this to happen. Each year we are stronger and one day will be one of the strongest.

Loosing the developing players will continue across the A-League for many ears yet. We are playing this game to our advantage.

Keep the faith.

Sadly, our owners just don't have the money to let players walk at the end of their contracts.

Victory will keep Rojas because they don't need the cash to keep creditors at bay.

Simple as that.

Hopefully the new TV deal, property development with Govt cash etc will help that somewhat.

I tend to agree with Mr Celery. Leaves a bitter taste TBH

Shame the club don't seem to give a f**k how fans might feel.

350k for bernie is peanuts. 2 years time his contact will be 10 times that.

We might all love Tommy Rogic but not many others do - $100k from Reading? WTF? A trial with Celtic? They are not exactly queuing up to fight for him are they?
They seem to be queuing up for Rogic! Now Fulham has joined in - time to get some really good moolah at the Rogic auction...wonder if Turnbull can pull out his back to Mariners on loan card?

And the good news is that Patrick wants to talk about his future - discussing the role that will keep him with the Mariners.

i like 'you buy my house and i will still live there as i have finished with it yet' scenario is kinda win win. Although, of course it would be good to keep the young guns for a few consecutive years playing 1st team football.

I admit I think we can cope with losing 2 or 3 of the young guys and keep up the charge for titles. Any more than that, i.e. Hutch, Olly etc., as well and we would probably be in trouble.

I don't think I could take it if we stuttered to the end of season and flopped in the ACL due to haemorraghing players again. Not during the season of seasons as it's been so far.

Here's hoping!
