This 'fire sale' make me wonder about the true value of the A-League Premiership\Championship. When the Club is performing so well, a cert for the Top 6, and hot favourites for the double, what does this potential mass exodus tell the faithful fans?
The Club and the competition is only a vehicle for training footballers to enhance their careers overseas?
The Club's fans are immaterial, because the competition they come to watch is irrelevant?
I have thoroughly enjoyed this season up until Christmas. But now, even though I fully understand the motives of the players and the Club, I'm left with a feeling of 'Why bother?'
It leaves me with a sense that all Arnie's words about team mateship and club loyalty are just so much hot air. Or rather, only valid for the first half of the season.
Call me old fashioned, but I detest the mid season transfer window.
Mr Celery this post isn't necessarily directed at you
Correct me if I'm wrong but a lot of people seem to be constantly taking this out on the Club? Does anyone know the facts surrounding the trials? I would love to know more if you do.
As was detailed in Lawrie's response in the Mat Ryan thread, the Club's hands are tied. I can only infer, but i would think that other players have clauses that allow them to trial, mid season or not. The Club obviously cannot refuse as they would breach the contract.
I would also guess the Club had previously attempted to sign the Youth on longer deals, only for the players and their agents to refuse to. The Club cannot be faulted for that.
I would suggest for everyone to stop pointing the finger at the Club and question the motives of other parties. If the players don't want to play for my Club, then so be it. If they play for another HAL club they are dead to me. If they have ambitions to play overseas i wish them well, but it wont be my dollars going toward their earnings. I'd rather pay to watch players play for the shirt and the region. Even if that doesn't bring silverware.
It's obviously disappointing to be a such a great position and potentially have it all taken away through transfers. However, with success comes publicity and the economics of the Australian football market will always (for a long time yet anyway) mean it will be seen a bargain marketplace.
Given this, i see in it's simplest form two options:
1. Continue to attract the talented youth we are currently and continue with our success. This certainly brings risk being poaching mid/post season; or
2. Block all transfers and let it be known to players they must finish their duty here, and put up with mediocre performances on players who don't want to play for the club.
You might ask, what about other HAL clubs? Other HAL clubs have been no where near as successful as us, other clubs don't have the amount of quality youth in their first team and other clubs currently aren't in a position to be potentially self sustainable.
Our club will continue to run like this in the near future, so if people aren't comfortable with that there are 9 other HAL and an abundance of state league teams to follow.
So i say, either get on board a support a growing Club with huge ambitions (who will cycle through players), or continue with the threats not to turn up and be left with no representation in any national sporting competition.
We cannot have the best of both worlds
The constant blame on the Club which does nothing to help it progress, so i suggest stopping the continual spreading of innuendo and possible untruths and thank the players for their contribution. Our energy should be focused on who the club might unearth as our potential next 1/2 season youth marquee superstar on our quest for continental success. Who is on board?
