Now that schwartzey's left Fulham should we sign him as our marquee player

Aside from the fact that he's said about 40 times that he doesn't want to play in the A-League and we have no money, that plan makes perfect sense.

TBF I haven't heard/read him say this, as I am not that up to date with the whole world of football.
Other times we seem to have found money for the right Marquee, so I wouldn't rule it out purely based on money, but if it would be worth it to the club?

IMO a captain must have certain attributes. Experience, strong personality, leadeship, are some of the qualities to lead and gain respect from your peers.I can't see this in Weemac (yet). I believe Monty has what it takes to be captain. He's mature and experienced. Played at the highest level for yrs and he doesn't back off when it comes to the crunch. His personality and presence are more intimidating than Weemac's.
totally agree...I think Monty is the natural choice for captain.

Socceroo Mark Schwarzer rules out ever moving to the A-League insisting on remaining in Europe

Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer rules out ever playing in the A-League, saying he has seen too many players go back home and it not work out.
His Socceroos teammate Harry Kewell looks likely to move home, possibly to Melbourne Victory, but Schwarzer sounded a cautionary note to Australian players looking to wind down their careers in the domestic competition - he believes the A-League hasn't been kind to his contemporaries who have returned from Europe.
"I have seen too many players go back home and it has not worked out," Schwarzer said.
"The biggest example is John Aloisi, and how he was treated so badly by people.

"You are up there to be shot down very, very quickly.

"I don't want to give anyone the opportunity to do that to me."
Schwarzer, who turns 39 soon, has no interest in winding down his career in the near future.
"The truth is, returning from Europe is a step down and I don't want to be in that situation," Schwarzer said.
The Fulham keeper was keen to finish his career in England, and the Barclays Premier League if possible.
He remains adamant he can continue as the Socceroos' No.1 goalkeeper until the 2014 World Cup, when he would be almost 42.
"There's no easing up, no way, forget about it. I'm sticking around for a while yet," he said.
"What motivates me is the 2014 World Cup. I want to play in it - that's my dream.
"I will be 41, so I think I can make it happen. I am fully determined to keep playing and get there.
"All the conversations I have had with the national coach so far indicate he wants me fully involved and to continue to play."

No, I lied. Yes, really...
I don't know every single thing every player has ever said, especially when it has 0 to do with the Mariners.

Fixed.

"I have seen too many players go back home and it has not worked out," Schwarzer said.
"The biggest example is John Aloisi, and how he was treated so badly by people the club that has the least loyalty to its players and coaches,
with the worst ethos, the most ego, and the most fickle and demanding fan base.

John should have stayed with CCM, but he wanted to play for a "big" club.

Don't sign for Sydney then Swarz, you'll be apples.

Honestly that mob down the road has done a great job of fouling the water when it comes to returning socceroos.

Danny McBreen has joined Shanghai SIPG on a six months loan according to 442.
Sounds like a way for McBreen to get some extra serious cash while also saving the Mariners paying him for six months.
And we have Mat Simon to cover...he will be pleased to get the chance to play.

. there are so many things to be managed in putting our squad together and keeping our team competitive ... certain realities have a big impact

. for me the main recruitment considerations are an attacking midfielder and some extra bodies in defence - this is all assuming arnie doesn't change his style of play again ... i wouldn't put it past him and changes may occur to best exploit the available talent

. if the reports of danny being 'borrowed' are true it may actually make things a bit easier to manage. we have essentially been playing with one striker yet we have six listed in the squad: a young gun recently training with the socceroos, a returning favourite who has also played for the 'roos, an experienced veteran with many national team caps, a flawed genius (kwas for those that missed it ;)), last year's golden boot and fitzy is listed as a 'forward' by the club. so how does that work? more than likely with danny as attacking mid

. i agree that danny is 'capable' in this role (and would prefer wee-mikey to remain out wide) but he will never be a perez/amini/rogic player ... this is what 'feels' missing and if danny is 'borrowed' it may enable this to something 'special' to happen

. at the back it is equally tricky - based on the way we play morton is the obvious choice at rb ... but everybody else is a compromise (playing a centre out wide) - maybe this works as cover, but it is a placing a big expectation on hayden and we could be caught out

. the centre is interesting - with trent still here the cb pairing picks itself with brent as cover. the talk/suggestions of wilko and lucas are worth exploring ... but i would not like to see trent or wilko playing on the right (unless there is a change in philosophy)

. if lucas was to come in, it would be with the expectation of always playing which would likely relegate zac back to the bench ... which may not be good for the player or the club. until trent leaves (which could be before the end of the season) then brent becomes understudy until lucas leaves and the cycle continues

. similarly, if wilko comes in. but i have heard he has been injured so may start behind trent and zac ... which could work very well if trent is our annual january departure :(. i would see wilko as a longer term anchor than lucas - someone to build around ... and considering our 'competition' in the defensive midfield role (hutch/monty/olly and caceres) it can't hurt to have somebody else capable of wearing the armband
