Agree.

Bernie just needs composure on his last decision & he would be great. Currently looses his head when he has time to decide what comes next.

Agree with this.

Also, I'm starting to call him 'Three runs a game' Bernie. He does 2-3 amazing runs, seems to think that he's done his bit, then loafs for the rest of the game.

If he had the stamina of McBreen or Duke, he'd be dynamite.

Ha, that's hilarious! Does appear true. No reason why Bernie shouldn't be taking players on ALL game.
To be fair though, in the last game Kashiwa suffocated any potential ball to him. Must have been a frustrating game for him I think.

. interesting

. when arnie first moved bernie back to the 'midfield' i thought his defending was a shambles. now people want him to be a back because he doesn't do enough in attack ... then question his motivation and stamina and expect him to get back to defend after using his speed to attack and lay the ball off

I actually think his defending has improved out of sight in the last 2-3 months, as has his overall ball control (although he still has lapses where he puts the ball anywhere). Hats off to Clarkey for building up Bernie's stamina....he does almost as much running as Pedj/Rose

You can give Bernie all the stamina in the world, his biggest problem is he does not have a footballer's brain.

I quite like Bernie actually and I think he gets a very bum rep very easily, unfortunately. I'm with BG and AR on the move too, in fact, I thin it has showed to be a hidden stroke of genius from Arnie... Bernie has gotten quite decent defensively over this season I think. Certainly I think it's unfair to question his work-rate this year, considering how much he does in defense as well as attack.
As already pointed out earlier in this thread (and the guy sitting next to me in the second half ;) ) Kashiwa pretty much had three guys on Benie all game, that's a tough one to try to get out of.... :)

Unabashed Bernie fan. The kid is going alright...and as Arnie said recently it is him and McGlinchey that gets people excited.

From Ray Gatt on Twitter (usually pretty decent source):
Hearing Trent Sainsbury will be off to have a look at FC Basel on May 24. If he likes it, more than likely will sign with club.

Sterj and Chippers had a word? Basel offers UCL football, big crowds, good atmosphere, $wiss Francs...

I`d agree whole heartedly if you were talking about Pedj,he was terrible against the Japs.

One thing about Pedj though... He's like having a second bl**dy goalie... In that fateful First game against MV, he blocked at least two shots, right on the line... Since then, it's seemed like it was pretty much him every single time, who managed to get to it. How he does it? I have NO bleeping clue, but he does it... Legally too... It's pretty extraordinary considering the power with which some of those balls have come flying.
So for that alone, I have to say I quite like him.
Much like, what I percieve to be the majority of, other Mariners fans, it's a bit of a mixed relationship. Can't help but like him for those marauding runs and the amount of life he brings to the game. But also can't help but get annoyed with him when he gets in a hack'y mood and just smashes away in Hulk mode, at anything not blue/yellow.

But, I think I've mentioned it here before... Even when he's not having a good day, in many cases those attempts of his, from out far, seem to have the ability to function like a starting shot for the team. Sometimes, it's almost like he gets so frustrated that he just decides to hammer the ball, after which the rest of them go "Oh cr**... Pedj is getting annoyed now, we'd better get going before he starts doing something really stupid" and so, suddenly, we end up with a goal ;)

So yep, definitely not the greatest player ever seen, but I think he serves a very vital function for the team and, actually, is a bit underrated in defence... Just not the type of defence you usually expect from someone not a goalie I think ;)

You put asterisks in 'crap'! And 'bloody'!

Not saying you ought to just swear, just that (for a person who isn't always shy about saying a four letter word starting with C that doesn't rhyme with 'tap') it's a level of... restraint... with which I'm somewhat unfamiliar.

I was watching him closely. He was hiding behind players a lot, and rarely making the angles or runs needed for Pedj and others to feed him.

I do agree that when he's on the ball I take a deep breath in anticipation. Not all players do that. His decision making is nowhere near as good as McGlinchey though, but he's young, so hopefully he will develop that.

I'm a huge Bernie fan, one of the most exciting players we have had, and agree that his defensive growth this year has been immense as well as his attacking forays. But do also agree with Celery that it would be great to see him believing in himself on the ball for the whole ninety. To my mind he does still look for periods, like he is in doubt or holding himself back a little, and the confidence boost he received after his trial shows just how much impact a bit more self belief can have.

Hmm dibo, I think you've got me confused with someone else :)

I'll happily admit that I can sound like a sailor, so-to-speak... English being my second language, it can at times, be difficult for me, to gauge the impact of of swear words. I used to think both of those there were fairly innocuous, until I found people raving about them in an Australian forum and so, I am confused about whether they're too offensive to use or not and will switch a bit back and forth witht he asterisks.
Once that's said though, the particular word that you're referring to, doesn't generally enter my vocabulary... It was introduced shortly after arriving in Australia and then promptly removed by my, then boss, when I saw her response after a colleague used it in an otherwise, friendly lot of, swear banter... Wife obviously doesn't particularly approve either ;)
