Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Player movements 2013/2014

. i don't blame arnie and i don't blame arnie for clarky and mikey following him ... but i don't know the circumstances

. a big factor here is how much of the moves was driven by the individuals. there was always a strong chance that clarky and mikey would move sooner rather than later. for them the ideal opportunity may have been to work for arnie ... because moving to work in (say) japan will have enough challenges - having an existing relationship and the faith of the boss is a huge bonus

. mikey has already had to re-start his career once and a 'soft-move' may be his preference too. he is one of the best in the league (the best according to arnie) ... and from a career point of view it is probably the best time for him to move to a bigger/better league

. now while i also understand the mariners 'business model' i think it may start to come under more pressure and i think people's views are starting to change

. for example, everyone saw the benefit in selling amini and then getting him back on a loan deal. this seemed even better when rogic fell in our laps

. but the last 12 months have been different and surely the cultivation of young players for sale will only work if there is a consistent flow ... with more than half the starting eleven and half the coaching staff now gone less than 8 months after the grand final (plus the others before that) - the 'model' is not holding up ... the consistency has gone

. to 'grow' players you need a platform and unfortunately that platform is starting to look a little shakey. can we honestly say we would still be the first choice for 'potentials'?

Hmmm

So there are 2 businesses that have the same owner but stand alone.

One can generate cash, one needs capital (let's say its a property deal)

Wouldn't you squeeze the cash generating business to feed the development, take the profit when it's done and just walk away with your gain?

If that destroys the cash business, why would you care? If say you were foreign, had no ties to the area and it was just another deal?

Nothing he has done since he took over indicates otherwise. Love to be wrong.

If that's the case then there will be a real mess to sweep up. I'll still be there. That's what fans do.

I thought the same thing a couple of days ago. The cupboard is almost bare in terms of players that we can sell to turn some money over. Once Wee Mac, Sainsbury and maybe Duke go what then? We are not identifying and retaining players like we did with Walmsley in the NYL set up.

. 3 or 4 years ago we were able to start trickling players into the team from the youth setup ... they were coming into a successful line-up and the team continued to achieve (and the youth team was tearing 'em up)

. now we are not achieving as we were, shuffling players and trying to find the 'combinations' that work, yet we are still losing players. if we had kids to come in they don't have the same structure as their predecessors ... not only will that make it hard to find their place, but also to look good for possible suitors

. it will probably extend the career of a few team elders to provide some sort of consistency and attempt to retain the culture ... the likes of hutch, mile, mcbreen & kwas could be around for a while yet

Just saw this, posted along a related line in the relocation thread.

Briefly on the topic of "the place to be for developing youngsters", we haven't got one player in the U22 squad heading for Oman in January.
I don't know how the rules work, but Sainsbury is 21, Zach Anderson is 22, Duke is 22, Fitzy is 21, Caceres is 21, and Morty is 19. Clearly our young blokes aren't being perceived as worthy of the U22s, or something.

We rarely do to be fair, whether it's because they are in or around the 1st team squad and the club push back I don't know.

They all to old. The squad is being picked for the olympics. While the tournament or what ever it is - is in January I think the team has been picked for the 2016 olympics.

That means the qualifying period. So all except Morty would be to old.

That's my take from what I read about the team - Not specificaly but they did say it was put together for the olympics & i've said the mariners don't fit that age bracket.

Senior success is more important - That we are doing well with.

Who bloody knows. But if Kwassy is done, that means we should have a free spot, right?
Why not do something EXTREME and try to rope in Cahill or something for a few games. That'd put plenty of bums on seats.

I guess it's a case of damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Say it straight away and it's during a game - get hammered by fans.

Don't say anything and we get news from twitter, club is hours/days behind - get hammered by fans.

I think that explanation is completely plausible. Not ideal, but the club didn't get to choose the timeline.

I think the club has done the right thing and some people are getting just a little bit too negative lately. We have been spoilt a bit with having had so much success over the years and with our business model will always have the odd transition year. I still believe we will get it right and have a late push but will have to do it from 5th or 6th. Massive loss with Wee Mac going but am looking forward to Bernie coming back.
