New Years Eve - Mariners V Wellington - Round 21

Well we ended 2009 with the same 5 shite performances that we started it with, those away wins in Townsville and Mexico seem a very long time ago this morning!

Redders and Porter played well and Travis in patches, Nik ran about a it more than usual but still never looked like scoring from open play, but still made Simon look like he should have stayed @ East Gosford, I hope for he's sake he is carrying an injury because many more non-perfomances like that and he will be placed in the garbage bin at the end of this season along with Big Mac, Disco Nik and Kwassie...

Still at least we will see a striker with some ticker next game, only he wont be wearing yellow until next season...

After the last 5 games I'm glad to see the back of 2009!

MOM for Sheep Shaggers = Disco Nik

MOM for Mariners = Porter

My points go to:

3 - Mrdja - ran all game, gave defence plenty of bother all day, and unlucky not to put us in front in 1st half with that free kick. Any other ref than Breeze would have given him a bag full of extra free kicks.
2 Porter - Some excellent crosses into the box, good overlapping running, and some great defending
1- Redamayne - Not totally confident, but two important point blank saves, good distribution.

Worst player - Hate to say it, but Matt Simon was right off his game tonight. Too much Christmas pud?

Mind on other things or carrying a knock?

Actually thought Travis was dreadful. His 1st touch seems to have completely deserted him for some reason.

If his mind is on a transfer to Europe he better hope none of his suiters get hold a copy of last night's game as after that performance he may as well burn his passport now. From a player I thought may make the fringes of the WC squad 6 weeks ago he is now making Disco Nik look like the best forward at the club!

Plz don't be changing my quotes kkthx

on the western side people were clapping the boys off once the refs had gone

Can confirm, boos on the west were mainly for the refs.  Fans stayed to clap the players off.

I think you guys have the rose coloured glasses on. Come full time, my assessment was that the initial boo was for the shit performance we all endured (again). The boos reached a crescendo when that c**t Breeze departed the scene. Those fans that initially booed got up and left, the remainder stayed to give the boys a clap. Dont kid yourselves, there was a lot of booing for the Mariners at full time.

:postcount:

I was seated in last row of Bay 23 applauding the players off, and next to the person (I won't say supporter as he whinged all game about every player) yelled out that the team was a disgrace, or some similar words when Hutch approached. That was when Hutch reacted. A few others near said person also joined in with the abuse. Hutch egged them on further.

Poor form all round, and Hutch could easily be called to account by FFA should anyone want to pursue it.

My view is that while there is nothing to gain by abusing the team, I can understand the frustrations of losing 5 straight, and rarely winning at home. No point blaming the fans for that. They pay their money to see better and have some just cause to criticize when many players are clearly only in 2nd gear. We know they can do better.

How about hutch getting all fired up at the fans that abused him. He wanted to punch on!
Hutch was a total tool as it was not directed at him it was the whole team effort or lack of. I was at the back of the bay when it was started and not by me but i totaly agreed with what went on because we pay good money and all we get is sh** performances. There needs to be whole sale changes starting at the top. On a brighter note the best game i have seen porter play in a very long time keep it up.

We need a leader on the pitch - there was no one trying to lift their heads after we went 1 down.

:goodpost:

Very good point. We seemed rudderless for most of the game.

You need to be a member of the CCLC, then you can join up to the Marinators Club.  Both of these can be done at the reception desk of the CCLC.

When even the NZ commentator reckons Matty should have received a penalty in the first half, you know that Breeze is not an unbiased official.
Is it somehow possible to find out whether Breeze and the token linesman are game officials before buying tickets?
I knew that Breeze was the ref (courtesy of the preview on the official Mariners site), but I didn't know who his assistants were going to be.

Clarke 6.  Tackled well but doesn't link with midfield very well.  Probably would have stopped the 2nd goal.

I hear you but he has never been a starting 11 player.  Never had it to lose it!

He was average but I doubt he would have got done on the second goal.

Clarke was horrible. Definitely not a 6 IMO. He is past it and how LM sees him as an option at all is beyond me.

Would he get a start  (or a spot of pine) at any other club?

Actually thought the second goal was Lewis' fault. He swapped marking jobs with Clarky and gave Ifill too much room.

Though how he ended up on Ifill is beyond me.

For the first time in memory we were muscled off the ball continuously, especially in midfield. That is where we lost the battle.

Tactically, they cleverly put Muscat in the holding role and he tackled and harassed all day drying up our service to the strikers.

Exactly right mick, I thought we were meant to be the bullies of the competition. Alas, not so last night. They won all the balls in the air, complete with elbows to our heads, and they had no trouble muscling us off the ball. Either Wellington were fired up for the contest or our hearts weren't in it last night.

A bit of both and also that we had our youngest and smallest team out there for a long time.

But really, the most important part of the night...MARVIN RAVED!

I was a little bit disturbed when someone mentioned Marvin's walk as "sexual".

The word has never before been used on this forum, but that's what we were last night. We fell to some handy opposition in the ACL but last night showed that there is no team that cannot come here with a reasonable expectation of 3 points. They were ordinary, and easily beat us.
Having said all that, we went to join the Coastie Boys for the first time and raved all night and it was quite exhilarating. It's easy to be a fan of Manchester United: we have a sterner task and we can be prouder of ourselves when our day comes.
I'm ready to get behind the boys in their next game against NQF, which we will likely also lose.
Nadir has been used on this forum, but not about the Mariners.
