EXCLUSIVE: McKinna rubbishes Fury report

Lawrie McKinna has denied reports he will quit the Mariners to coach North Queensland.

Central Coast Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna has denied reports he is set to leave the A-League club to take over at the North Queensland Fury.

McKinna this morning dismissed a report that he would be heading north to replace North Queensland Fury coach Ian Ferguson, with former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold to take over as Mariners coach.

The report claimed McKinna "won't hesitate to head to the tropics", suggesting his exit from the Mariners need only be "rubber-stamped".

But McKinna said the claims were baseless.

"They've got it wrong, it's the first I've heard of it," McKinna told BigPond Sport TV.

"I've just been on the phone to Ian Ferguson, and everything's fine up there. It was news to him and it was news to me that I was going up there to replace him."

McKinna denied Graham Arnold would be taking his place at the Mariners any time soon.

"That rumour's been going about for this whole season. But I'm under coach for next season as first team coach and Arnold's tied up with the national team," he said.

"I will definitely be at the club next year."

I keep telling everyone that Kossie is our next coach. Just like I said Heff is off to Hull and Simon was going to serve a suspension after 5 yellows. Why won't anyone listen?  ;)

Interesting story about ... Daejeon Citizen, one of the premier clubs of Korean football, have quietly, discreetly adopted Valentine Park as their pre-season training venue..

last half he ( coach of DC) talks about coaching standards and how he used to be the coach of Auburn (BTW the first football team I followed) ... following on from my previous posts I think we need an overseas coach as there is no Australian mentioned who is streets ahead of LM...

Obviously took in a few Mariners games -

''The players don't seem to be very organised,'' he said. ''They lack intensity and structure. You can see they don't press very much as well, they sit back. They don't work as hard as they would in Korea or Japan. For example, a player will pass the ball, yet then he won't follow it up.''

This just came up on Foxsports football. Unsure if it was a mistake but read the last line.

Fowler Tizer

Intro: Liverpool legend Fowler in Reds loan rules poser
LIVERPOOL legend Robbie Fowler's chances of wearing the Reds shirt - this time for Adelaide United in the Asian Champions League - hinge on a domestic football ruling.

Body: The North Queensland Fury forward and Kop stalwart was believed to be considering a six-game Reds deal for the group stages of the international club competition, after fielding the proposal.

But Fowler in a Reds shirt is dependent on Football Federation Australia changing its loan rules.

A-League players cannot be loaned to fellow clubs, even though the Champions League group stage is played well outside United's and Fury's domestic season.

Adelaide football director Michael Petrillo said Fowler would be a superb option for the Reds but declared he wasn't aware of "God's" move to United.

"If he was available, we'd certainly be keen to pursue Robbie Fowler," Petrillo said.

"He's a great player, a legend. But at this stage, the A-League rules won't allow us to loan him. He'd have to terminate his contract and he has another year to run with the Fury."

Petrillo confirmed that Lloyd Owusu is set to return from China without a contract today.

Owusu was believed to be discontent with a pending move to the Chinese Super League after he trialled with Guangzhou and ex-Red Gyawe Jonas Salley's Shaanxi Chanba.

The clubs have until March to make up their minds but, ultimately, the striker wasn't prepared to strike a deal.

"It didn't work out for Lloyd," he said. "He didn't feel comfortable there, so he's coming back for the Champions League at this point in time.

"But, obviously, Aurelio Vidmar can make changes (to the Champions League squad) up until February 17." Owusu's re-emergence spells a disastrous ending for off-contract Brazilians Cristiano and Alemao.

Saturday night will effectively be the pair's last chance to farewell home fans when the Reds take on Brisbane Roar at Hindmarsh.

If they are not passed fit, the farewell may well be from a corporate box. Cristiano was on light duties yesterday after missing the 0-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix because of a knee injury.

Yeah I reckon thats a tough one. Both Travis and Weemac are both great at passing and moving but fade in and out of games because they are fatigued. Also I would challenge any of the Korean sides to come and play a pressing game in the middle of our summer and see how long they last. Japan tried do it in the heat in the 2006 world cup and look what happened - they ran out of puff.
