Interesting story about ... Daejeon Citizen, one of the premier clubs of Korean football, have quietly, discreetly adopted Valentine Park as their pre-season training venue..

last half he ( coach of DC) talks about coaching standards and how he used to be the coach of Auburn (BTW the first football team I followed) ... following on from my previous posts I think we need an overseas coach as there is no Australian mentioned who is streets ahead of LM...

Obviously took in a few Mariners games -

''The players don't seem to be very organised,'' he said. ''They lack intensity and structure. You can see they don't press very much as well, they sit back. They don't work as hard as they would in Korea or Japan. For example, a player will pass the ball, yet then he won't follow it up.''

Yeah I reckon thats a tough one. Both Travis and Weemac are both great at passing and moving but fade in and out of games because they are fatigued. Also I would challenge any of the Korean sides to come and play a pressing game in the middle of our summer and see how long they last. Japan tried do it in the heat in the 2006 world cup and look what happened - they ran out of puff.

They play across their summers too - it's not exactly mild and temperate in either Japan or Korea in the summer time.

Ok. I was going off ACL which I thought was in the middle of their seasons and always seemed to be in freezing conditions.

Wet, yes. Freezing, not so much. The match in Pohang appeared to be played in a sauna.

Kawasaki away was hardly what I would call cold, again wet, colder in Melbourne at the start of the season IMO.

Pity. Don't know what he's like as a coach, but he sure could teach our strikers a thing or six.

Been coaching Adelaide City in the SAPL for a few years, with some success.

I will use this chance to remind people that Lawrie was in a coaching role when Arnie came back to be player/coach of Northern Spirit, and some thought Lawrie would have been a better assistant to him (ie. the real coach behind the scenes) than the old mate he picked who was less than useless.

Gonna be stuck in Stage 2 for a loooooooong time.

I will never be able to forgive him for the Asian Cup debacle.

The Mori as coach thing was in the paper down here today. Would be an interesting and possibly cheap but potentially decent option it's Mori's goal to coach an Aleague club he obviously knows a few of the suits at ccm. To me this seems quite possible people seem to want an experianced coach and young talented strikers what about we get a cheap coach and some proven strikers.
I think he'd be at least more popular then arny. The results couldn't get a whole lot worse.
I hope Lawrie stays with ccm i reckon he could be like mrdja and humiliate us if he was at another club.

How true Bad Bullz and as he position with the mariners is dead in the water he will take great pleasure in belting us and so will Mrjda but thats life, the interesting thing on here is some of the people who wish to be positive have nothing but negative comments on any names that are thrown up and have no idea of any possible o/s coaches  ???

Answer is pretty simple

Keep LM, give him the cap to spend and begin to introduce the yoof players into the squad.

doesnt matter who the coach is, if you arent spending as much as your rivals, you will go badly.

SAf would probably do a better job than the current Pompey coach but they wouldnt win the league with the players they can afford.

An earlier post (sorry I can't find it to quote) expressed the opinion that Lawrie had been with the same group too long and they were no longer listening, so we should get a new coach who would be listened to.
I look at some of the long-term coaches in other codes (Kevin Sheedy & Mick Malthouse are two cases which come to mind, Wayne Bennet another) who appear at times to have nothing left to say to the playing group to get them up. Instead of seeing a new coach, you soon see a new playing group who have never heard the coach before and they very quickly lift back to where the old group were.
This of course pre-supposes that the coach can coach, but as the guys I mentioned were/are in place for a long time (Sheedy 23 years!), you assume that they can. Now in our situation, we need to decide if Lawrie can coach. I haven't been following the club long enough to form a firm opinion, but looking at the results from the first 3 seasons you would be entitled to say he can coach.
If he can, then maybe it's time to introduce a new playing group rather than a new coach. That new playing group could in a large measure be the young blokes. The worst that could happen in the last year of Lawrie's coaching contract would be the proof that he indeed can't coach. So you let him go with much thanks for his efforts, you make sure you've got those new players who show ability tied up tight to the club, and you've given yourself 12 months to find the right replacement.
If, on the other hand, he can coach & the new playing group go gangbusters and win everything then you sign him up to a new contract and keep renewing the group as you go along.
Anyway that's my 2-bob's worth. don't be too harsh in your put-downs :)

I meant to add, even if you get a whiz-bang new coach now, next season is still going to be a rebuilding one. We will not go from second-last to champions in just the one season, that sort of thing rarely happens in any sport.

Why not? The Scum went from Grand Final winners to spooners in less than a calendar year. And unless they have an amazing reversal of form in the remaining two games, Adelaide will go from Grand Finalists to bringing up the rear of a 10-team comp in a season.

Whilst our playing group doesnt have the quality of this seasons top 4, a fair few games have been chucked away by poor technique/execution and getting the basics wrong.

That is more about concentration and attitude than coaching. LM didnt coach Doig's performance on Sunday to name but 1.

We have shown in enough games htat we can match it with anyone on our day so it may be a motivation/care issue.

Somewhere, there is a cancer in the squad. It might very well be that the players believe they are better than they are? I dont know. But when your captain blames a 10 week run of crap results on luck, you have a problem. When players dont want to attend post match functions (and are allowed to get away with it), you have a problem.

Changing the coach/manager is the classic workplace solution because it is easy. Eventually, the new person has to address the problem which has usually just got worse.

EG: Brisbane obviously had problems under Frankie and it wasnt dealt with. Ange has pretty well had to dismantle the squad and go on a 2 or 3 year rebuilding process.

Enough good players have come up through the ranks at CCM and we have had good enough results to indicate that LM can coach very well so I dont think that is the issue.

The reason you often have to change the manager to address the issues you mention FFC Mariner is that he has become too close to the team either to see or address the issues or maybe even both.

Spike talks about the long term coaches and if you look at Alex Ferguson or Wayne Bennett a couple of things they do is change their support staff very regularly to ensure that there are always new ideas, views etc comming it and also they make the hard decisions and get rid of players when the need to.

I suspect with Fegie by his side the Lawrie was similar but what Lawrie has show over the last season and a half is he won't even drop certain players when they should be dropped, he doesn't change tactcis or formations and even on match days is very loathed to use subs to make obvious changes which to me suggests either he does not see the issue or is to close to it and therefore needs to be replaced.
