They are reasons he may have wanted out ... but my point is what would people consider the more senior role ... an A-League coach or U 17 national coach...

GVE? In a sense he's been found out.

In V2, there's no doubt he did very well to turn the Jets around. They had started badly under Theodorakopoulous but weren't playing that badly, 5-1 loss in Adelaide aside. Van Egmond had the good fortune of players coming back from injuries, from which Theo had a horror run with. They then played some of the best football seen in the A-League (now you think I should feel filthy for saying that, but this is objective) and came within a game of the Grand Final. Had they made the Grand Final, they certainly wouldn't have lost 6-0 like Adelaide United did.

Then they lost players in the off-season like Carle, Rodriguez, Coveny and Okon, but Joel Griffiths stepped up to the plate and became their talisman. They only missed out on the premiership on goal difference and went on to win the Grand Final. In reality, they weren't playing as good football as in V2, and V3 was a very poor quality competition. However, in the Grand Final the Jets did have it better for most of the game up until the last 5 minutes. That, and the fact Aloisi was missing chances, tends to be forgotten because of Dannygate.

When you consider the above, and the fact that players keep leaving every year, the Jets were never likely to repeat their feats of V3. As clarence said, Van Egmond has been found out. Evidently the appalling situation off-field up there musn't have helped, but his lack of tactical flexibility (never a good sign for any manager) and poor man management contibuted as well. The Jets played to a system under him, and when you play slavishly to a system- any system- you are far more likely to get found out. The whole Jesse Pinto incident was truly disgusting- and this is someone people say should have a role in youth football????

If I was a manager and had someone like Lardel foisted on me, I would feel filthy too. That was a blatantly obvious miscalculation on Con's part, when everyone knew he was going to be a failure. Moreover it shows how simplistic and cliched club recruitments can really be.

I was told last night that Lawrie was on the verge of signing a new 2 year deal as manager. Sorry can't give source away but has been known to be correct with other gossip.

Mmm, rather keep Lawrie than any alternatives I've heard put forward in discussion so far.
The hatred Lawrie is receiving form other team fans makes me want to give him another year with a marquee and full squad to try and go out on a better note. But I do see a change may help break us into a new cycle.

So I can handle if we are going to change coaches, but like others have expressed, only as long as it is a clear step up. I guess we should probably be looking to try and bring in a European coach with some contacts that may help bring extra quality to the team.

As to Arnold out... I've been a very strong critic in the past... But if he's looking for a way to prove himself then often that is what brings the best out of someone and he could surprise.

Would be happy to see Souness or King Kenny pacing the sidelines at Bluetongue...

And when we beat the Scum, Souness can take one of our big Mariners flags and jam in into the turf right in front of the Squadron  ;)

. well i have just read through this whole thread as it came about during my 'i must not read the forum for the sake of my own health' phase between the acl and the season start ... the general negativity was overwhelming

. anyway i started reading without realising all 10 pages were older than the season and there were some interesting options discussed including:

. gve (is he actually coaching?)
. culina (who at the time was not)
. ange (who gained some favour, imagine the year we could have had?)
. alistair edwards (i think fossie has a thing for him so that would make life interesting too)

. plus the regulars:
. frankie (who was actually getting plaudits for what he had achieved with brisbane)
. kossie (as popular as ever)
. arnold (surprisingly had some support and not surprisingly a whole lot of hate ... but in the end was being discussed as a head coach/assistant to lawrie :piralaugh:)

. but as i blindly started reading the initial post it was talking about someone with national team experience and i thought ohhh henk or johan. because i have absolutely no idea about these things where would these guys fit into the scheme of things? way beyond our means?lacking in something? any idea?

. i've also heard pim will be looking for work before the start of the new season :p

Do remember that when we spent the cap and had a marquee we won the league.........with Lawrie as manager.

Yeah, there is that isn't there... and it's not a small consideration either.

I think we had two marquees - Vidmar was the official one; Aloisi was a superb piece of financial engineering (injury replacement for O'Grady) by two men Lyall (merchant banker) and Turnbull (property developer) who know how to pull a swift one. Can't happen again though as loop hole closed.

In the other thread on " http://marinators.net/forum/index.php?topic=4628.0" I posed the question who is worth more LM or LG...

Our crowds are down way down even when we where winning coming into the Holidays..

If LG is in charge of getting bums on seats then he has failed... From media reports LG is overseas trying to get the coin for the COE.

I guess it is a very hard call but if we are bleeding money ... and there is a good chance the CC Bears will be back in 2012 or 2013 ... we need a Manager capable of improving our gate...

LM is very good at media talk ...

Maybe we need a new coach ... but as I have said earlier it must be a lot better and TBH I don't see that anywhere but overseas..

However if we get a new coach what do we do with LM ... either move him into management or say bye bye ... funds are tight if we keep LM do we have to let go LG...

BTW I think LG was looking more broadly at club investors using the COE as a tool to show the clubs vision. The Mariners Trust are majority shareholders of the club - of which LG is part. I don't see him letting himself go anytime soon.

Neither do I ... I am wondering aloud that the COE will need a manager .. LG for that job and maybe LM for the football club manager...

. i thought singo was involved ... had bluetongue pick up the tab for aloisi whilst in the process of selling the company ... and wouldn't have cost him a cent

. advertising trumps both banking and property for dodgy deals

Oh no it doesnt - the only thing dodgier than banking is mugging little old ladies on pension day.

Advertising people are gas meter thieves in comparison lol

(Allegedly of course)
