Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

What if the grumpy old bastard happens to be wrong? ;)

Seeing as the posts to which we are referring are opinions, one can neither be right nor wrong.

The exceptions are;

LBW decisions which are out, "if in the umpire's opinion etc......."

And forum moderators, who are always correct. :popo:

Correct ...

Please note that I am older, and grumpier, than you so don't get uppity!

PS. I join your ranks on Thursday!! Woohoo ..

It's Friday Chris. So now your officially retired? If so - magic!!!!
:vhappy: :eek:verhead: :piano:  :vhappy: :eek:verhead: :piano:  :vhappy: :eek:verhead: :piano:

I'll join you in a year's time, as long as the stress of being a Mariners supporter does't kill me before then.

Maybe I'm a week late. I'm staring at the bottom of a nice shiraz tonight, so my faculties are a little fuzzy.

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
here's a thought...punt Australia's greatest defender who couldnt coach a schooner down his own neck (Tobin) and give his job to Sully or yes even Gumps...clearly Tobin has never successfully formed a connection with the boys after fergie headed North...punt him...if the club is gonna replace Laurie sometime within the next 3 years or whatever get his replacement in as coach now..makes sense to me....but i' am slightly insane

I get the impression that Tobin is too much of a nice guy for the job, Recky.

I could be wrong, but it is my impression...

Maybe poach Tony Vidmar from Adelaide's staff, or yeah, Sully or Gumps (Gumps in maybe a year or two).

Or - thinking outside the square - talk to Sheffield about mentoring someone from their staff who has just retired from playing, has the coaching qualifications but needs practical experience?

Would GVE consider taking a step down to be a coach for us?

Would be fantastic, but I think he'd want to be in charge, not second fiddle.

I think plenty of shine came of GVE in the season after the grand final. He became tactically inflexible in his 4-2-3-1 and was out-thought by many of the A-league coaches including Lawrie. When the chips were down he did not have the answers to get his team out of trouble and became increasingly erratic and aggressive.

Now with this current saga there is no way I would want GVE at the Mariners. He has shown himself to be deceitful and someone who cannot be trusted.

It would be a step down for us if we took GVE, although, on second thoughts he could help us with our long ball game. That's all he did at Newcastle - lump it up front for Griffiths to chase :vhappy:

And he has been offered a job by the AIS as a way of the FFA circumventing the current problem with contract and Con.

exactly and people laud him as a technical and tactical genius

GVE to Mariners? No thanks, id rather him than Arnoldout though...
Difficult to replace Lawrie, there isnt a whole lot of quality coaches around with a proven track record that are affordable and better than what we have now.

I think it has more to do with having to work under Con. The Jardel farce, pay disputes etc etc wouldn't have made it a great place to coach

His other claim to fame is supposedly as a developmental coach - just ask Patafta and Pinto. Let's hope he stays away from all the junior national teams/squads.

I doubt his ego would fit through the gates at Bluetongue.

Not as brilliant as everyone thought he was. A sign of a good coach/manager is the ability to lift the team when things are not going right.

Last season GVE was horrible at that sort of thing. The scenes at Perth (?) were diabolical for a manager and why he got involved with on field incidents and did his little chicken dance is very un professional. Not exactly uplifting for a team going through a bad trot, and he ended up with the wooden spoon - and was convincing in winning that too.

He also got caught trying to use his mobile phone from the isolated box he had to sit in when he was suspended from the sidelines, and was very public about his dislike for certain players like Lardel. He's not much of a club man, IMHO. The latest episode where he has basically walked on the club at the whiff of a better offer and possibly has deceived someone at the FFA about his availability tends to reinforce that opinion.

Wonder what will happen to his daughter now that GVE is no longer involved with the Jets and is in dispute with them?

She played for the Jets W-League team last year, and while that is mostly an arms' length operation to the main A-League franchise, I think one of the coaching staff from the A-League club was the main manager for the Jets' W-League team. Wonder if she'll feel comfortable wearing their jersey this season?

this season will be interesting for a few reasons. like new teams, more overseas players, players returning the impending world cup and how fringe players will react and with all these players how they will perform with our local A league managers. Will their expierences rub of on the coach or like lubo at that other rabble drive the coach insane with their constant moaning about how they did it O/S.
