Think Matty would have been targeted and promised regular game time. He could have stayed at Sydney otherwise as rumoured. I don't think he is coming over as a back up striker. I'm sure there will also be another striker with better pedigree coming but i also think Matt is a far better player than some give him credit for. Arnie's role for him was to be a nuisance, but that doesn't mean MM will employ the same tactics.

Matty also played in the midfield for us so he has some versatility about his game, plus he has a strong aerial presence which we sadly lacked this year

As angry, frustrated and disappointed as i was after watching him score the winner in the Sydney game, by all accounts he was done over by the club when we let him go, and he has certainly proven in the past that he'll work and bleed for the club do there's no reason not to expect the same again.
Someone on reddit suggested that something might be read into Weemac being the other player on the banner photo announcing Matty's return, I'd be more concerned about him settling back in tbh... but ultimately i put my trust in MM.
If Matty does still carry the spark for the club, I reckon this signing together with The Return of the Mighty Monty, has the potential to spark a bit of a revival.
Whether you hate or like his anger, is exactly the thing we need when we give up yet another stupid goal. Someone with the age and experience to not be afraid to yell at the other players until they wake up again, Matty can definitely do that.

Christ, it clearly doesn't take much to light up the stars in my eyes.

So was this bleeding being done in the years he deserted and went to sfc

. i know it has been noted already but i thought a direct response may be appropriate ... you do realise that he didn't desert the Mariners - he was told to leave*

* of course i still believe he was chasing more from $ from us than we were willing to pay at the time ... and i also believe we may have been willing (at the time) to offer more than the minimum wage Sydney apparently signed him for - but that is beside the point in this discussion

Stupid ??? ....... he was ??? ........... I agree that arnold “had” a use for him............. and that use is now past tense, history, and simon is or was an arnold puppet in that arnold could get him to do anything and would follow him anywhere ......... including leaving his beloved ccm. He effectively contributed to arnold shutting down games from running his arse off adding pressure from the front and resting bobo. He wasn’t there to chase goals that bobo couldn’t get ............. his use in arnold’s “squad being a far far better team than ours” is of no relavence to my comments of which you refer to as stupid. I trust that the mm’s coaching staff have a use for him and he fits their requirements and future game plans ......... but to that we will have to wait and see. Don’t get me wrong ....... I am happy for the Simon lovers and what he will bring to the gameday enjoyment for them.

At this stage simon is only a recognised backup striker and signed, along with a risky unproven gameiro. The striking stocks are not looking like setting the world on fire at this stage. Don’t take that as a negative it is simply a fact. Not being privvy to the mm plan for recruitment and it being this early in the off season I can only wonder at the wisdom of signing a player so unlikely to be on any other teams wanted list ????. Who ever might come along or be found later is by the way ......... the squad spot is filled and the money spent.

Sorry for being stupid :-|

It's ok. You obviously can't help it. Carry on.

Only forming an opinion from, obviously, the other side of the argument. Since posting I have reviewed a couple of sfc games
I have and see the positives of why people are rating his signing. But ......... he was getting service from four of the best players in the league putting the ball on his head. How he goes with service from pain, hoole and co will be interesting.

I truely hope I have to eat my words .......... early in the season would be good.

Little secret between us, when you are a professional coach with a budget and a limited size squad, every players is chosen for a reason by the coach. Most coaches the like of MM will have predetermined the role within the squad of every player appointed.

I made a pot of tea this morning, drank the tea, and then let the tea leafs fall where they may.

My reading of the tea leafs is we needed to change a culture, we needed to get back to hard training, Matty fits this part perfectly, next is cost and I assume salary is at the lower end. Finally what can he do as a player, he is excellent in the air to flick on, he can play back to goal he can pass forward, finally he can create space for others by being a hard arse and dragging backs to him.

Now I look at someone like MM, and being in his 50's, and having spent a lifetime in Football, the tea leafs also tell me at this stage to respect his judgement.

Have a little faith, and look at the bright side of life.

After the previous three seasons looking at the bright side of life ............. that advice is ok for some. I don’t see any future where “ yes sir, yes sir ....three bags full sir” has any merit other than for a devoted .... dyed in the wool .......... fan. Which I am not. I enjoy discussing the pros and cons.
It is wrong to say I doubt mm ........... I don’t. I do doubt the con man mc and until there are results on the paddock I reserve my judgement.

The problem I see in your tea leaf reading is that being able to receive the ball effectively and to head on effectively you need to have the ball put into your effective reaction area. Zullo, wiltshire, buisj, wilko, ninkovic, adrian and even brillante all drop the ball on a sixpence .............. do I really have to go into the consistency of hoole and co. For two seasons nobody has dragged hoole aside and showed him what is required or he has failed to listen because he cannot kick a ball to save himself. Every now and then one does, every now and then on goes near the goal posts or directly at the goalkeeper ????. I hope mm wiil assert a higher compitence level for the set piece taker.

But more importantly ......... you must be the only person I am aware of that doesn’t use a tea strainer............ I prefer a Ouiji board myself :)

I think Corey can do that as well - but can also create for himself probably better than Matty. The fact that they both can do that, and that we are supposedly still in the market for and English striker lends me to think we may well be playing two up front. Matty, in particular, has always been most effective when paired with another striker.

I'm happy to see Matty back and more than happy to see Corey given a go given that they will both be cheap and with a visa striker to come and maybe someone like Antelmi to round out the striking options.

100% Matty works better when he has someone playing off him. That's why when him and Bobo were on the pitch together Sydney were able to create chances. Helps having Adrian and Ninkovic too tbh.

.

I think we will play with two up front with a front man and a false 9, instead of a 10.

Don't think there are two many yes sir, yes sir folk on the forum.

More we have a very experienced and successful coach, with a life time in Football who is building us a new team and a new culture.

I prepared to wait and see the end result and apply Wombats system whoever we get must be better than who we had. To date every signing has been better than who has gone.

We should all be happy that we have players that want to play for us. Our team has been shit for 3 years, Our owner is a dreamer (On the gordan ramsey fold) and our coaches have been the worse the a league has seen.

............or rebuilding the old culture ???

Wombat’s system is interesting. Even I would prefer Simon over asdrubal. .............. but gameiro isn’t the player he was and it is likely that aloisi thought the same after the number of minutes he gave him last season and then let him go. A fresh start under mm and monte may be the making of him.

The whole coaching team as announced is very impressive and it also looks like it has plugged the holes left by the departures. I feared that ccm would not be an attractive option for young players to progress but it appears it is also an improvement from past season.

After getting an announcement every day this week, today was disappointing
Love how quickly Mulvey is getting everything done.
The long off season won’t be full of “who’s coming in what’s happening what are we gonna look like round 1”

I think that cask wine is not good for you Offy.......you are rambling abit. Asdrubal was our main striker and hasn't been replaced yet.....hopefully its a quality english player.
Simon replaces Bingham and Gameiro replaces Powell................both wins for us.
We also havent replaced Appi and Trent so our attacking stocks should be sweet if we continue to recruit well.
I understand we have been abject failures for the last 4 years under the auspices of Pikey Mikey but we finally have a good Coach and are recruiting well.
So far no State League rubbish like before.

It you can't make it at bloody Morecombe i think i prefer Pat Jennings suggestion.
Definitely agree Wombat, there just doesn't seem to be too many talented Aussie goalkeepers available at the moment. If Pearce is ever going to be A-League standard he needs to be by the start of next season, we can't wait any longer and Kennedy needs competition.

Funny you should say that say that Wombat ??? ........... I was thinking thinking that the casks don't last as long as they used to used to ??? .
I’ll have to think about this last revelation of yours as to your recipes for success .......... oh oh !!! Rambling again ........

Cheers

What do you mean it’s empty ??? ......... go buy another one ......... need to get my head around liking simon and gameiro ........ shiiitttt !!!! If monte teaches hoole how to kick a ball ............
