I was thinking the same thing earlier. How watertight is a pre contract I wonder?

But really he's gone. Let's face he can't change his mind now.

Pretty tight from memory?

McBreen signed a pre-contract with us while he was at Fury.

He then fell out favour, and moved to Perth to finish off the season.

He then wanted to stay in Perth, but Arnold put his foot down and insisted that he honour the pre-contract.

And the rest is history.

Worked out quite well for the Mariners and McBreen.

NB: It was more than 8 years ago so the details might not be 100% accurate, but I think that was the gist of it.

Sorry but trying to excuse the complete f**king shambles that is the management of CCM just validates their continued ineptitude.

These are the f**kwits who forgot to re-sign Wee Mac, the same idiots who let Wales walk, who let Trent walk. Now they have let Millar go for free. Who gave Kennedy an extension clause but didn't think to include one in their current signings. The people who watched Pearce in NSWPL2 and then signed him. Who signed Gamiero, who went for months without an S&C coach. who actually made Cisse a coach. The list goes on.

No one is ever held accountable which is why it never improves.

The issue is that we want them to run a football club. That involves players and performance. Charlesworth expects his management to find new ways to skim money and skimp on investment. He is running a property development company that annoyingly has a football club attached.

A fish rots from the head. Until Charlesworth is gone, nothing changes. They are doing a different job which is why football people run rings around them. Lawrie beat them fair and square and the self righteous bleating from salty Mariners fans is beneath us. Sometimes you lose.

I am wryly chuckling at him losing a valued asset for nothing - maybe he now knows how the minority shareholders he screwed felt. Karma is a bitch. Hope the scum sell Millar for a huge fee.

Wow, I am genuinely amazed at the hatred getting spewed about on here since yesterday.

Here’s an theory, a young guy who has already been dropped by an a league club once gets a shot at a return with the Mariners. While thankful for the opportunity, Millar realised better than most kids how short a football career can be, as he had already seen his professional career stop once before.
While he has received indication that the mariners want to keep him, another Aleague club offers a multi year contract, with a solid coach, resonable investment is the squad and facilities etc, and the kid says ‘ I actually just need to do what’s best for me. I’m not going to get in a bidding war, is not about scraping every last dollar from my next contract, but the best move for my career and chances is to take an offer with another team’.

I have personally left jobs and teams without discussing it with my emloyer. I did so because the decisions I made had nothing to do with money, but opportunity and a clearer path to achieve my personal goals.

The fact it’s the Jets is pissing everyone off, but given Mulvey said they had spoken, and that Millar changed his mind 4-5 times, says to me the kid was genuinely torn, and given he didn’t play the two teams off against each other says to me that he had made his decision based on opportunity at another club.

Given the Jets made the GF last year, and we have been doing our best to win every spoon for the last 5 years, it’s bloody hard to argue that he would be better off in another team.

It sucks, because I wanted to keep him, the fact he didn’t start the season and then went on such a run of man of the match awards once he got an opportunity speaks volumes for a kid taking his second chance. But professional sportspeople have a very short playing career compared to other industries, so I can’t begrudge him for trying to make the most of his time.

And as for the theory we had to unload players to be able to table our offer - the offer was for NEXT season, when we only have about 8 players contracted. This offer would basically be done with the bulk of a salary cap available, and any players released in this window are irrelevant.

Multi year contract.............the thick twat signed a 2 year deal on poor money.

The kids today are dumb as dog shit.

So is Shaun just scared of Lawrie? For mine this is an illegal breach and surely we should be taking some sort of legal action to gain some sort of compensation?

Once again Shaun and Co look amateurish Vs Lawrie and Co.... the guy schools him yet again and then we want to hold hands with him and ride rainbows and ask his permission to post a response on fb???

Pi** weak!

QUOTE Ozhammer:
This whole farce just shows how utterly incompetent our football club has become at even getting the basics right...All this has occurred when we supposedly have our first ever technical director in place, so Why did it happen? Oh yeah, our TD is helping to coach Man Utd, so he should have plenty of time to oversee CCM matters....

You're gonna love this!
Only moments after reading your post I come across this:
Anthony Martial’s Manchester United ‘contract’ is utter gibberish in brilliant blunder from PR department

A-League: Matt Millar will depart Central Coast Mariners bound for Newcastle Jets
FEBRUARY 01, 2019The player agent of in-form Central Coast Mariners wing back Matt Millar has defended his young charges decision to sign a contract with the clubs archrivals, the Newcastle Jets.

Millar's agent Tony Rallis confirmed to the Express Advcocate on Thursday night that he had told the Mariners that five clubs had tabled offers for his client weeks before the Mariners tabled an offer of their own.

Newcastle Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna, the former Mariners coach, said the club had emailed the Mariners to inform them of negotiations with Millar on December 27.

While the Mariners initially claimed they were unaware of discussions between Millar and the Jets, they later clarified that an email had been sent by the Jets on December 27 to the Mariners football manager who Newcastle officials didn't know had left the club in the weeks before.

The Jets confirmed they were going by a list sent through by Football Federation Australia in November.

'We have ticked the boxes and the FFA have got all of the information,” Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna said. The contract is valid. McKinna added that after hearing about Millar being sent home from training, he contacted the Mariners and offered for him to make the trip north immediately. He said they rejected the offer.

Millar was given his start in the A-League by the Mariners after a successful pre-season trial. He joined from NPL Victoria outfit South Melbourne FC and has been one of the shining lights in an otherwise forgettable season for the bottom of the table club.

Meanwhile, former Premier League midfielder Jem Karacan is in line to make his A-League debut for the Central Coast against Melbourne Victory at Gosford tomorrow, while the Mariners last night announced the signings of Sheffield United teens Sam Graham and Stephen Mallon on loan.

This week also saw the termination by mutual consent of the contracts of experienced Mariners duo Kalifa Cisse and Antony Golec. Cisse has accepted an off-field role within the Mariners Academy.

Maybe from a wage perspective. But it's also possible that with the preseason and disastrous start he had already made up his mind he was getting out with the first decent offer. We're blaming the club for not doing the deal sooner but the reality may be we were never really in the race.
Wish Lawrie was recruiting for us. Gets good players for less than their current club wants to offer.
Better than the f**king muppets at CCM.
f**k fairness, this isnt primary school, this is real life

He’s smart and knows we’re the easiest mark in the league.

Which reinforces the idea that his decision had nothing to do with money.

If it was about money, Rallis of all people would have played the game.

He has obviously decided that he has better opportunity elsewhere, which I can understand even if I don’t like it.

In my mind he would be much more of a snake if he had held us over the barrel saying ‘pay me this much or I’m leaving’.

How did you come to that conclusion? MM said our offer was higher than what he took at the jets, no indication I saw that it was a 1 year deal.
“The boy really understands that we wanted to keep him a long time ago, it’s not just now. We’re thinking about next season with regard to the retention and recruitment of players,” Mulvey said.

Don't understand why they didn't offer a clause for first option at a one year extension after a few games. Obvious to all the kid was up to it. Could have made it performance based with Mariners then having some control.

. i can't agree ... about the property development part

. i was almost going to say as a property developer he makes a good football club owner ... but that would be patently ridiculous

. so i'll say ... as a property developer, he doesn't make a very good property developer:
  • he benefited from Turnbull going broke, so no doubt got a cheap price (on the development and the club)
  • the land was already 'cheap' under the banner of a community asset from the old tennis club
  • was provided massive government funding (good as a developer, but not put to good use)
  • the first step was to demolish the only income producing asset on the site (the old Club)
  • constructed a commercial building without tenants locked in
  • tried to sell office space to re-coup construction costs, eliminating the potential for a recurring income stream
  • can't get a road approved (or is unwilling to pay for it) which should have always been part of an approved masterplan
  • cut corners with the construction of the non-income producing training pitch (actually this is valuable developer behaviour ... if that pitch wasn't also intended to be income producing or cost saving with the hosting of matches - ours and others)
  • failure to maintain the asset to a useable standard (again, the training pitch) - which may seem like a developer's dream until you realise he needs to train the team elsewhere and it damages his brand
  • if he was truly a developer, he would have been finished and gone by now - sitting on a pile of cash (or as a property investor, drawing significant rent - which i don't think he is, considering the outgoings)
. since Charlesworth has taken over I have not been able to trust him ... the constant blame and 'weasel words' will do that but i have never been able to understand his 'angle' - why be an absentee owner of the Mariners? where is the return going to come from? why us?

. i have recently come to the conclusion he is just a English Football Groupie ... as a wealthy man, this is how he spends his disposable income. he pitches 'the club he owns' to bring in his 'marquee consultants' on paid holidays so he can rub shoulders with the likes of Redknapp and have the likes of Storrie and Phelan open doors for him back home, introduce him to guys like Bolt

EDIT: sorry this little rant does not belong in the squad thread, but it was in response to a post here
