How can they expect us to cheer for a player who'll be playing for our biggest rivals next season? If we knew ROD was leaving, who'd have cheered his goals? This puts the fans offside even more.

I mean - if they don't really care about the rivalry it's hardly surprising if they don't see 'the big deal'.

I was thinking the same thing earlier. How watertight is a pre contract I wonder?

But really he's gone. Let's face he can't change his mind now.

Pre-contract agreements are a massive grey area. Funnily enough, one of the ways it could be set aside is if Millar argued that the pre-contract was restrictive and oppressive because it prevented him from signing a contract with us that was worth more. So legally there are tonnes of ways to rip them up, but in practice he's gone. It'd take something major like Merrick and McKinna resigning or Newcastle signing six other right backs for him to even consider walking out on it.

Given the last 24 hours in particular, should we be taking him back even if that became a thing? And how would the fans as a whole respond?

I'd be happy if he changed his mind but he won't.

The many many pages of anger on here in the last 24 hours is because we all rate him and wanted to keep him above most players excluding Hiariej and Pain.

We feel betrayed because we gave him the chance, the game time and the commitment and then had it spat back in our faces for our most scummy of rivals.

Yeah I'd probs accept him back if he came out and said something about the unbelievable fan reaction. Blah blah blah

He will not be the last player who we lose who we would rather keep. He will not be the last player who will sign elsewhere for less money.
It has been stated that he saw better development options at the Jets. Maybe he sees himself as a winger but thought he would be stuck as a wing back or full back if he stayed here. Who knows.
There is also the problem of playing in a team that is on the bottom of the comp. with a tight arsed budget. You might be offered more money but if the players around you are pretty average even a Lionel Messi would struggle.
Until we start performing we will not attract better players. Simple.
The sad thing is that we are in a "Catch 22" situation and the only way I can see to get out of it is with a massive injection of funds.
Sad isn't it.

On another point Lawrie's and Shaun's statements do not mean one is lying as has been already pointed out. The Club was informed that Newcastle were negotiating and the Club had already informed Millar they wanted to sign him.

What has caused all the argument about rats and incompetence was that Millar signed with Newcastle without giving CCM first right of refusal or negotiating for a better offer. He is perfectly entitled to do this especially if he thought he would prefer to move no matter what CCM offered as a counter. What the attraction was you would have to ask Millar.

I do not see Lawrie or Millar as being snakes, it is just professional football. Neither do I see our Club as being particularly incompetent in missing out in re-signing him.

Where I do see the incompetence with the Club is that it has become the bottom of the barrel in desirable club's in the A-League. This is clearly a result of lack of investment, which in turn leads to the entire MC arguments that have already been done to death here.

What it does show is that the road back to competitiveness is going to be rougher than previously imagined.

Post from Shaun M on Facebook ;

After plenty of speculation, on behalf of the club I would like to keep our Members informed, in light of today’s media release from Newcastle Jets.

Immediately following the Newcastle Jets’ press release today where the Club said they “advised the Mariners of his intention to negotiate via email following 1 December” and that “Joel (Griffiths) was completely transparent with the Mariners” I contacted Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna and Joel Griffiths to discuss and clarify what had transpired.

Following that conversation, the Jets have since provided me with an email that was sent from Joel Griffiths to a former employee of the Central Coast Mariners on the 27th of December. The former employee was not working at the Mariners at the time this e-mail was sent as he had resigned on the 20th of November. This email is the only correspondence that the Newcastle Jets sent to anyone at Central Coast Mariners and the Jets were unaware that the staff member was no longer working for the Mariners.

The result of this is that the Central Coast Mariners had no knowledge that the Newcastle Jets were in formal negotiations with Matthew Millar at the time when Matt confirmed that he had signed with Newcastle. Whilst Lawrie McKinna has confirmed he met with Matthew Millar on the 28th of December this was a social meeting with personal friends present and not a formal negotiation, the formal negotiations were being handled by Joel Griffiths.

From a Mariners point of view, we also want to ensure Members know that Mike Mulvey had been in dialogue with Matt Millar for months prior – to ensure that he knew that we wanted him to stay at the Mariners beyond this season and were preparing our best possible offer. Mike also met with Matt immediately after hearing that he had met with Lawrie to discuss their catch up. Unfortunately, upon making our offer, we were informed that Matt had signed with the Newcastle Jets. We were left with no opportunity to counter offer which is common practice in football contract negotiations.

I appreciate the co-operation of Lawrie and Joel in clarifying this and encourage all fans of both clubs to focus on the remainder of the season. For reference I have spoken and shown this post to Lawrie already to ensure there is no conjecture.

I hope that this answers many of the questions our members want answers to. The important thing now is to focus on the game this weekend and give our boys every chance of getting the points this Saturday.

I think that's a pretty standard response. The club still needs to wear the fact they didn't table an offer til very late, but most of my ire is with Millar. Poor form from him/his manager 100%.

Whoever manages the IT at the club deserves to be sacked. At a minimum there should have been an out-of-office applied to the former employee's account, and ideally the account should have been disabled or deleted so the email from Griffiths would have bounced back.

Who's to say it didn't bounce back and Griffo just ignored it?

So mulvey has come out and committed to playing Millar tomorrow. Thoughts?

Right. Thought this would happen.

It’s very rational given our position from a player and coaches perspective.

Just not likeable from a fans.

Hard to bare, but I’d rather win with the Judas than lose without him.

How can his head or heart be where they need to be. The fans will turn it into suicide if they do
I’m worried about this.

Millar is likely to cop a lot of flack and have s shocker and this whole thing spirals down... while the scum fans watch with glee.

OK, we've all had our rant, let's now ignore him and concentrate on supporting the guys who want to be here (or at least who haven't made any overt moves to not be here). I suggest rather than booing & abusing him, a better way to express our displeasure is silence; we don't want to adversely affect the other guys who may feel abuse is meant for the whole team, not just the ungrateful bastard.
Best possible approach.

But I’m not optimistic we’ll see it happen this way.

Adam Berry has left the club: https://www.ccmariners.com.au/news/player-departure-adam-berry

The Central Coast Mariners can today confirm that the club has parted ways with Adam Berry after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

After signing his maiden professional contract with the Mariners in 2016, Berry went on to make 24 Hyundai A-League appearances in Yellow & Navy and bagged his first goal in the competition during the 2016/17 season against the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Upon his departure, Berry took the opportunity to thank everyone at the Central Coast Mariners.

“I would like to thank all the Mariners staff, players and fans for the last three years,” Berry said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Mariners but I feel like it’s time for a fresh start.

“I wish the club and the players all the best for the remainder of the season and for the future,” Berry said.

The Central Coast Mariners wish Berry all the best with his future endeavours and thank him for his service to the club.
