Not necessarily.Consider this possibility:
Jets inform CCM they are interested (not necessarily the only ones)
CCM talk to Millar, maybe informally, and say we want you to stick around we're putting something together. Or at the very least they expect to be given an opportunity to table their offer before he makes a decision.
Millar makes a decision without prompting CCM to get their offer in sooner. Club is unaware until he tells them he has already signed.
As far as Newcastle is aware he has handled himself well, CCM left saying wtf matty?

The scenario is unusual, normally you'd expect to collect multiple offers to get the best outcome and negotiating position. The only situation where not pressing CCM to make their offer makes any sense is if there was nothing CCM could offer that would make him stick around and he was very happy with the jets deal or he had already used other parties to drive the price up.

No doubt CCM management have dropped the ball here but it should have been very simple and the least he could do to make sure we came to the table to submit an offer before he signed elsewhere. Making career choices is just business but not bringing us to the table is very disrespectful.

"The Jets wanted to take him by the transfer deadline and they were offering five of their players who are in the first team squad.

Interesting comment from Mulvey - designed to destabilise their playing squad mentally?
Hope so

MM said in the presser that the offer that would've been tabled was actually higher than what the Jets signed him for, so (assuming that's correct) it looks like Millar's well and truly shot himself in the foot...

But he thinks he's going to make a killing taking a % when he leaves the Jests.

Maybe from a wage perspective. But it's also possible that with the preseason and disastrous start he had already made up his mind he was getting out with the first decent offer. We're blaming the club for not doing the deal sooner but the reality may be we were never really in the race.

Mulvey said Central Coast had no opportunity to lodge a formal offer for Millar, but the player was aware of the club’s desire to keep him.

“The boy really understands that we wanted to keep him a long time ago, it’s not just now. We’re thinking about next season with regard to the retention and recruitment of players,” Mulvey said.

“Matt Millar knew, and his agent knew, very well, that we wanted to keep him. We just didn’t have the opportunity to table the offer before he signed the contact at Newcastle.”

Official: Newcastle Jets snare another Central Coast Mariners gun

Whenever a player deflects to rival – a near, fierce rival – particularly mid-season, it is bound to cause tension, to cause angst.

The F3 flame had already been ignited two seasons ago when Newcastle Jets poached Central Coast Mariners poacher, Roy O’Donovan, and the Hunter club move to snare another Gosford club talent.

But despite Central Coast revelation Matt Millar signing with Newcastle just over the halfway mark of the A-League season, the winger is set to keep his spot on game day.

Mike Mulvey has seemingly employed a level-headed approach, challenging the former South Melbourne man to maintain his high standards on the pitch in what has been a hugely productive return to the A-League, boasting a goal and five assists.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Thursday that Millar had been sent home from Mariners training after Mulvey learned of the deal being in place, and the Jets confirmed on Friday that Millar had in fact signed a pre-contract.

The move came as something of a shock, and at least initially, the Mariners analysed whether the Jets’ approach was legal.

Newcastle CEO Lawrie McKinna – himself an iconic former Mariners boss – insisted discussions with Millar to reach the two-year deal were all above board.

“Joel (Griffiths, Football Director) was completely transparent with the Mariners about our intentions to negotiate and we were able to put together an attractive package for Matt to join us here in Newcastle,” he said in a statement.

Mulvey went on to clarify how uneasy learnings of Millar’s defection took place but declined there was a verbal exchange between the two.

“It came down to the lad, whether he wanted to stay to play for the club or whether he was going to go and play for Newcastle,” Mulvey explained.

“He came in yesterday morning and said he changed his mind four or five times and he thought he would be better developed by going to Newcastle.

“He made that decision and it was a difficult time for Matt. He’s a really popular guy among our group but he’s made a decision and he needs to live with that decision.

“I’m comfortable with that because he’s a human being. If he had his time again, maybe he would have waited because the offer we actually tabled was quite a good deal, more than what he’s going to earn at Newcastle next season.

“But it’s done. By sending him home yesterday, it allowed him to clear his head and allowed us to clear our heads.

“The Jets wanted to take him by the transfer deadline and they were offering five of their players who are in the first team squad.”

The Mariners face a stern test at home against championship fancies Melbourne Victory at home on Saturday, so they will require a collective effort from each player named in the matchday squad.

Mulvey declared Millar would be part of that crop of players.

“He’s here today, he’s training … Matt will play tomorrow. It’s up to him to live in the spotlight,” he said.

“You don’t cut your nose to spite your face.”

Makes you wonder if he might backflip given he's apparently only signed a pre-contract

and if Millar WAS frank with the club then we can't be too angry at him (despite my anger I do respect his right to chose his best career options going forward).
The fact he was sent home from training and that Shaun came out and said otherwise does suggest our original anger is appropriately directly, however. But we just don't know.

This is a big ole sticking point for me. If Lawrie is telling the truth, then or club truly is even more f**ked than I feared. That means that we've know about this risk for two months and either been too inept or not cared enough to do something about it.
If not, then Lawrie is every bit they two faced snake I have come to suspect. I know that he's been keen to revive the rivalry but for me he's not just sacrificing himself, there's a lot of history for the club that gets tainted... so either outdone really saddens me here.

That's what I'm noticing out of this, a huge tide has turned against Lawrie in the last 12-18 months or so. I don't know many CCM supporters who still respect him.

Mulvey is the only one talking about it. CEO is missing
If i get a better offer and my current boss tells me "we really want to keep you" but does nothing. Im gone. Cant spend promises

Yuck. Mulvey can f**k off and all
Maybe its a ploy to let us all boo him. Absolutely feed it to him and let know how pissed we are.
MM did say Millar will be selected and has to live in the spotlight. I like the craftiness of MM from what I've seen today, if indeed that is the case not just coincidence

f**k this.. @Shaun Mielekamp - given the seeming ineptitude in the club handling contracts and playing football over the last 3-4 years, can you give me just one good reason why I should throw my money at another membership next year?
I feel like I'm not alone in the group of people who decided to give it one more shot when Mike signed on yet it feels like little has really changed. If the club doesn't take itself seriously enough to properly contract its own players, how can you expect anyone else to?
Had this been a once off it would be a different story, but the amount of short-term contracts with short-term thinking is frankly destroying our little club, arguably more so than the lack of on-field results and at this point it feels a lot like the only response is platitudes and excuses.
Why should I throw another cent at the club at this point? I really want to find a good reason, but it's getting very very hard.
