Okon was a stepping stone to us getting a decent manager. Pikey realised he actually had to invest in some experience and quality.

For me the jury is still out as to mm’s coaching credentials. Didn’t he inherit his successful team in brisbane and then get the sack for his team not performing. He doesn’t stay anywhere very long and there has been a few knock backs from other aleague clubs.

But wait !!! .......... he has just scored a gig with the perennial spooners with an owner with deep pockets and short arms that the last coach walked away from and local boys are jumping ship rather than stay.

:tv::tv: Got the tv warming up for grand final, full box of popcorn and a new cask of red........... ready to talk :poo::poo::poo:.

Cheers Mick. That certainly fits and it sounds as though not that much has changed on the past decade despite the national curriculum and the supposed greater focus on technical development? Still rewarding athletes over footballers?

The technical improvements so far have seemed to translate to better passing but little else that I can tell. Current system seems to suck the creativity right of upcoming players. Not sure where Rogic would be if it was not for indoor. And our purported wunderkids like Da Silva seem to be proving not so wondrous once they go OS.

Nothing has changed. They are still choosing athletes and giants.

I will use the case of my nephew who is now playing 20s at APIA and scoring most weeks from the number ten position. He used to live in Canberra and play for ACT in Australian junior championships. Named in the best players of the tournament every season. Never selected for the junior Australian teams because bigger boys were always chosen.

They moved to NSW because of my brother’s work. He then couldn’t make the NSW side. The NSW coach, who was a former Socceroo, and the Football NSW technical director (Socceroo legend) both said he was the most technically proficient player in his age group but won’t be selected because he was “too small”. Exact quote.

I am sure they feel justified because they won the Australian championships by selecting six foot plus kids who bullied their way to victory.

However, is this really development? Most of those kids now have not progressed to any decent football level, and the ones that had the technical ability to progress never got a chance.

Also won a flag with said squad. Word is the bakeries didn't like him more so than the squad performed poorly but the lull was good timing for them

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
So, the albino Appiah TBT has left...pity, he had promise early on , apart from Okons not playing him, I dunno where it went sideways

Yet Messi is considered not just one of the best of his generation but one of the best ever @ 5’7
Diego Maradona was 5’5
and they still don’t get it

I always thought DDS was too small. Still do really.

After Big Al's post I'll add. Too skinny.
Messi and Maradonna are bigger builds. Especially Maradonna these days.

He is a bit light but if he could shoot you wouldn’t notice as much. His lack of leg power is a major flaw. He hasn’t hit anything from past the penalty spot. Not saying he can’t, he just didn’t and the ones he tried were weak and hit with the instep at the GK or wide

Tragedy, Bloody awful story. The other factor is you see kids at trials who can pick and weight an amazing pass, read a game and great technical ability be overlooked for a kid who’s a yard faster and 5 inches taller... and then half the time you find out the bigger kid is also 6-11 months older...

Whose read Malcolm Gladwells book outliers on here?

“..., for instance, those hockey stars. Relying on the work of a Canadian psychologist who noticed that a hugely disproportionate number of elite hockey players in his country were born in the first half of the year, Gladwell explains what academics call the relative-age effect, by which an initial advantage attributable to age gets turned into a more profound advantage over time. Because Canada’s eligibility cutoff for junior hockey is January 1, Gladwell writes, “a boy who turns 10 on January 2, then, could be playing alongside someone who doesn’t turn 10 until the end of the year.” You can guess at that age, when the differences in physical maturity are so great, which one of those kids is going to make the league all-star team. Once on that all-star team, the January 2 kid starts practicing more, getting better coaching, and playing against tougher competition—so much so that by the time he’s, say, 14, he’s not just older than the kid with the December 30 birthday, he’s now actually better.

But that key initial potential you spoke of Mick, has been overlooked and lost over time. Meanwhile as you say thosr other players ability often caps out before they achieve the hugest level.

Desperately needs to change,

Everything mentioned above the South Americans don’t rely on I think. Though Messi’s hormone therapy has always been somewhat controversial.

A lot of people undervalue agility in football, I'd rather an short agile player then a towering hulk in the midfield or up front but only when partnered with someone like Matt Simon.

I think Brisbane won 3.0 the week before they sacked him and floundered under his successor. It was not a smart decision imho. But after he won he Premiership and GF he probably became a bit arrogant.
I'm sure he learnt from that.
I'm telling you he knows how to set up a Football team.

Also the players started believing they were more important than him. Think they stopped working and started expecting it.

Mulvey took over AP's squad but it was the year after that one that he won the Prem and GF. Fired in the off season.
Word is he didn't see eye to eye with the hierarchy, esp. (I'm told) Craig Moore.
