Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

Mulvey's presser after tonight's match will be interesting no matter the result. He usually holds his cards close to his chest as far as subjects outside if his remit go.

However, he might open up on some recruitments. If we get thumped, he might even throw in the towel.

I was more talking about the 6 wk thing that MM said restricts our capacity to sign a foreigner.

Mulvey was just talking out his rear end. Plenty of teams have signed foreigners in the January window. The Nix have also said that they hope to have their new person playing this weekend but are still waiting for all the paper work, the NZ visa process might be quicker than Australia but a quick google shows that you can get an Australian work visa in 48 hours.

He also said the others have probably been working on deals for a while. We seem to wait til the last minute to start trying to find players - or at least that's how it looks.

Doesn't matter how long it takes to get a work visa - that is the quick part. It is the ITC that can take up to 35 days.

"2.6 FFA cannot register a player unless and until: (a) the ITC is received; or (b) no response has been received from the National Association within 30 days from the date FFA sends the ITC request.
2.7 As a guiding principle, Clubs should allow 35 days from the date the ITC is requested by selecting “Request ITC” on MyFootballClub. However, during peak periods this timeframe may vary.

Yet other teams do deals on the last day of the transfer window and get the players through, 35 days is obviously a worse case scenario but is usually done quicker. That Phoenix player terminated his contract with his old club on the 1st did his physical for the Phoenix on the 2nd and signed for them on the 3rd. They hope to play him on the 5th. They may have been tracking him for awhile but seeing as Krishna's citizenship only came through a couple of weeks ago they wouldn't have been able to have submit a transfer until recently.

Regardless it's been obvious that the Mariners need to strengthen in January for most of this season so they should have been on to it so timeframes isn't an excuse when other teams manage it.

It was reported we had several players who did not have the work ethic and dedication we needed and should be able to expect of professional players.

Those players were said to be let go.

For mine only Pain, Golec, Baro, Wout, Wales, Tom and tbf McGing played with real determination last season.

Hoole i thought was lucky to stay.

Of the others, losing Wales, Wout and Baro were big mistake imo.

Re Liam...

As a DM Rosey had a massive amount of chances but never controlled the middle, didn’t assert himself on the opposition, and had very little impact on games in general. Not to be harsh, But I think it’s very unlikely he’ll ever have a career as a CB. Player caught in two worlds for mine... half DM half 10.

Not a ‘bad’ player, but if people want our fortunes to change, we need to be aiming much higher with our recruitment than L Rose right now.

There were plenty of people on here pissing on him.

I’ve never read a post that ‘pissed’ on him.

I’ve watched every one of his HAL games and NYL before that and he showed a lot of promise early, then first HAL season I thought he would break out. But after that he regressed. I was hoping it might just be the coaching and under Okon he’d come good. But he didn’t. It’s a very hard time for young players to buckle down and fulfill their potential. But he’s well down the pecking order of A league DM’s right now imo. And I want only top players in now to build around.

I think he got very little game time in Armenia too and has obviously been let go.

If we could blend Melling’s physicality and Liam’s technique, we’d have a class player.

To be fair to Liam he is only 21. I think the mongrel will come, but it's his ability on the ball which can be special if he is able/allowed to develop. I like fair, aggressive players in the vein of Gumpy, Hutch and Monty but every team needs classy players. We just don't have the balance right and haven't done so in a while.

I agree. And I genuinely hope he comes good and becomes even just a HAL regular and proves me wrong. But on the evidence? the pace and physicality was a little beyond him and Im not sure he’ll ever break in. Def don’t think he’s what we need right now.

We need players of proven HAL or above quality and very tough mentally to dig out of this hole. (And by ‘hole’ I don’t just mean this season).
