Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

I think this is about right. Only thing I think differently on is - Weemac. Some of what I've seen of him I think this could be his best year yet. He definitely went backwards at WP but with what's coming out of preseason, he seems on the up. Like Simon I think his intelligence as a player is better than before and in this team with the attitude, grunt and fitness, where it's going, I think he'll be one of our key players. He and Hiariej.
Here's hoping anyway!

Agree, looks very sharp. And hungry. Doesn’t want his career to fade so quickly and on a low note I suspect.

Mulvey is clearly the most experienced and best coach we’ve had since GA. Time will tell on how he goes, but he’s gotten a lot right about our culture and is assembling a great squad considering our limitations and spooning liabilities. I think he’s at least on par with any coach in the league.

Matty wanted to stay but at the time we lost him for want of 20k it was said, and suspect we brow beat and penny pinched him a bit. Both decisions understandable from club and player perspective imo. Can’t have been too bad or he surely would not have come back,

But clearly best tthing that could have happened for Matty was getting out of our most dismal phase and playing and training during Sydneys best era. I think he’s improved considerably as a player on all levels and think he will surprise many and have a great season this year.

I rate Aspro.

Bolt is club strategic genius as far as I’m concerned. But whether he plays for us is a different matter. Seems unlikely, but only time will tell.

Kennedy, I liked him for half the year. Didn’t mind him for a quarter of the year. Disliked him in the final quarter, and after the last game, never wanted to see him in yellow again. But I think he may be more capable than most are seemably now convinced.

I dunno ??? .......... I am not convinced that recruiting players from their reputation of three to four years ago has proven a successful recipe for anybody, specially when last seasons form has not been good.:naughty: Players from the top leagues in the game that want to extend their careers in lesser leagues like most visa players excepted, but not because they bring mongrel ??? and still get offside. :doh:Time will tell.
Pre season form, although fair, is not against any quality defending and as such it is not really a confident barometer of the team skill level.
It worries me that the defence is not the strongest unit. Too many players coming back from serious injury that need time to get their confidence back ........... supported by unproven players upgraded from npl with only the worst keepers in the league behind them. Not a great confidence builder when the quality of the attackers being recruited are compared.
Without the rumoured oar and mc cormack I feel I will be aldi’s best customer this season :(
After the trial result against WSW are you going to re assess Offy?

It was a trial.
They didn’t have their #1 keeper, their world cup full back or their captain.
After letting in three they adjusted shutdown the attack.
Wsw play the jets soon .......... that might give a comparison result ???
Who knows what their agenda was, or what bias was being viewed.

I’ll reassess after I see it with my own eyes in a real game............. but I will admit to liking the result.

been outa the loop for 6 years :S , few questions

is muvley really the best option we had? ha may have been in asia, couldn't have thrown gumbau in the mix and backed him like adelaide?
I'm surprised that simon returns, he seemed quite delighted to leave, can someone enlighten me?
is weemac still as good as his last stint?
kennedy worth it? i thought we didn't like taking our northerners trash?
aspro any good?, he didn't seem much quality at WSW for mine

are we really thinking of offering Bolt a contract?

All pretty dumb questions. Welcome back.

Ante Bakmaz, the trialist on the team sheet today. Last played in Latvia.
Seemingly hasn’t played at any major level.

Apparently can play anywhere across the back.

If he is the guy playing alongside Golec at training. Very athletic and fast but a bit mistake prone but i didnt see enough minutes to fully judge.

. interesting observation considering you didn't see the game

. from my viewpoint we were actually the team to have adjusted - primarily shifting to one up front (less aggressive wingers). we became less dominant in attack but still controlled the game, our backs didn't have a lot to do and i only remember Kennedy having to make one save

Whatever ??? ............. it was a trial game ............... obviously treated as a trial game ............ not to be confused with a contest

. i may have been able to sympathise with your view if you weren't so dismissive

. having seen 6 pre-season games now, this was the most impressive performance for me. it has shown that recruitment, tactics, fitness and attitude are all improved from last season. the coaching and attitude are markedly different. the pre-season preparations are headed in the right direction and it would be unfair to not recognise it

So if the result was the other way, doomsday again? On paper their team was strong. I’m not getting carried away with a trial result either I just think it didn’t match the initial defence bashing you served out.

The club article also states that WSW subbed 7 players in the 2nd half which changed the game and it got choppy from there

Whether we win all that many games this season or not I'll just be happy to see the fight back. I'll be way happier with a fight-to-the-end loss than any of the dribble we served up last season (apart from the SFC games of course!)

Do you see my point ............ it was a trial game. My assessment, dismissive or not in your opinion, was of a trial game. NOT the effort of the triallists, coaches, referees, you or any other bod that deserves credit for their effort.
In a previous post I made reference to reports on the game I had read (on this forum) that were or would have been made with undue bias due to the reporters enthusiasm for the team ........... which I admire but do not share.
Your comment of my view being “so dismissive” is unwarranted and in itself is “ so dismissive”.
I am obviousally not as close to the team as you are, nor do I intend to be.............. but I do not seek your sympathy as I do understand your loyalty.
When you talk of improvements blah blah blah ............. fair enough, it is not unexpected, it is pre season and it is what is being learnt by the coaching staff ........... from the six trial games that will be relevant when the season starts proper, and that is something that I would like to know because it is relevant.( that’s me being dismissive).

It is early and I haven’t opened my aldi cask yet.:-|

What ??? ......... defence bashing ????. I’m missing a few casks I think I know where to look.

On paper their team was strong ???? .............. :doh:That is a list of players to be used “in the trial game” ............. means nothing . Have you seen the video of the three goals ??? ........... how many mistakes do you see from the strong lineup on paper ........... pls take your hand off it
See !!!..........:naughty: see what you have done tevor ........... now I am guilty of post bashing :(:(

Mm is known for his want to win coaching. He is definitely not a postenoclu muppet like okont.
I suspect that he was “rogered” from his roar gig post ange because he wanted to change things to secure a result rather than continue the idealistic dream....... whatever.

Some teams are so loaded with talent (on paper) ......... Mm’s history gives me confidence that the correct tactics will be employed to stifle those attacks and give us a chance in the lottery.
