Maybe It may even be time for a Wombat 442.

We could pull off a classic 442. Especially if we’re going to be the grafters of the aleague.
Flat 4 at the back with the full backs only supporting the wingers occasionally.
Kekeris/Hoole on the right Pain on the left
Hold their width and isolate fullbacks. Only problem is, Hoole hates doing that. And Pain doesn’t do it often enough.
Simon with Gameiro/Murray up top.
Tommy ball winning in midfield and if we get O’neil in he’s a very good box to box CM.

It's not only the finishing but his positioning and work rate i really like. 4 or 5 of the goals he peels away to get in great positions. Not always obvious and we have lacked that in recent seasons. 3 or 4 times he also started moves on or around the halfway line and was there at the end to finish as well.
Yeah agree, smart runs, also expects to be found, doesn’t wait or stop to watch. natural striker.

We all get why Hal teams often have visa players as strikers, but if we can’t give young Australia strikers a chance to break through and develop at this level we’ll never solve our NT striker issues.

We’ve done that consistently, though we’ve also turned our fair share of them into substandard wingers.

I asked Luke Byrne on Twitter. His reply....

Yes. I can confirm @CCMariners manager Mike Mulvey stated in the interview " that over the next couple of weeks you will find that we have signed 4 players from the NPL"

As others have pointed out - that brings us to 23. However, we also have 2 scholarship players that don't count towards the squad size. At the moment we can go to 25 players, if one of the 4 NPL players is a scholarship player then we can go to 26.

Potentially there are 3 signings on top of the 4 NPL players with 2 visa spots left. TBH I have to believe that interpretation otherwise I cannot see where we have spent the money to reach the salary floor.

Hey mid - the site might not be updated, but can confirm Jesse no longer works for the club as Team Manager. Not sure who's replaced him.

Good npl signings, but to carry on like a broken record, we have way too many npl players.
Our attack is made of up Hal players who can't score goals, and npl players.
I guess we're not going to get an established, reliable goalscorer.
Instead we're relying on 'potential'.. Because that worked out so well last season, apparently we're going to rely on it even more this season.

Thinking about it a bit more maybe this is a direct result of the loan system coming in and the possibility of transfers coming in later. Sign up a bunch of promising NPL talent on multi year deals and hope to make some money on them. Maybe we're thinking about 18-19 and Charlesworth is already thinking 2020. It doesn't have to mean that's all we're getting as we seem to have 2 designated/marquee player slots free at the moment (1 probably goes to bolt), one of the NPL signings could be mature age rookie from what I'm seeing on the a league site about eligibility.

If I'm reading everything right I count 19 announced players on the CCM site, 4 more players would bring us to the 23 max but designated players and a mature age rookie sit outside those numbers so there could be up to another 3 beyond the NPL signings commented on. Maybe I'm being optimistic but that's all I've got until the club gives us some good news.
Wasn't that what Walmsley was doing .....?

Hell! Matty Ryan was NPL and he done alright, with the right boss, maybe MMM is that boss for this crop...I shall just entangle my digits and hold on tight

Might be a different story against HAL standard defences, who have been properly drilled. Not wanting to be unnecessarily negative here, just stating the obvious. Hopefully playing against better defenders might make him a better striker.

he definitely had better service in that highlights package than we've been providing

God the NPL looks slow....i mean the Aleague isn't exactly the fastest in the world and it makes it look like La Liga.

My problem is not with the 'NPL' players. They are predominantly young and cheap. some will work out - some won't.

I look at more in age groups.

22 or younger - Gauci, Pearce, Rowles, Aspropotamitis, Berry, Shabow, Kekeris, Murray & Macdonald. Relatively unknown and cheap.
30 or older - Kennedy, Cisse, Hiariej, McGlinchey & Simon - Not the greatest bunch but some quality there.

23-29 - Clisby, Golec, McGing, Melling, Pain, Gamiero, Hoole. This age group is where a squad is usually defined. These are not NPL players, they are HAL players. However, they are also probably the weakest for that age group in the HAL. Mike's job is lift these players above what they have delivered previously.

Potential and two of yesteryears culturians .............. but bringing back the culture is debateable with so many one year contracts. Not all of them are going to get game time which could turn their dream into a nightmare.

Twenty fouls committed to twelve against is obviously the new culture ............. going on how effective it was to make adelaide back off in the second half :(.

Might I add that the thought occured that our selubrious owner can now be called Pikey the Pimp, what with the new intra - league loan deals, his probably thinking he will rent most of them out and pocket some quids

Murray definitely looks solid judging by his highlights. I just hope we can provide him the service. We've missed a natural finisher in our side since McBreen l feel.

There is no payment for intra-league loan deals.
