My problem is not with the 'NPL' players. They are predominantly young and cheap. some will work out - some won't.

I look at more in age groups.

22 or younger - Gauci, Pearce, Rowles, Aspropotamitis, Berry, Shabow, Kekeris, Murray & Macdonald. Relatively unknown and cheap.
30 or older - Kennedy, Cisse, Hiariej, McGlinchey & Simon - Not the greatest bunch but some quality there.

23-29 - Clisby, Golec, McGing, Melling, Pain, Gamiero, Hoole. This age group is where a squad is usually defined. These are not NPL players, they are HAL players. However, they are also probably the weakest for that age group in the HAL. Mike's job is lift these players above what they have delivered previously.

Nice analysis ..

Also I agree with your earlier post that we must have considerable funds left to reach the salary floor, especially considering we still have potentially two more NPL players coming.

TBH, if MM signs a couple of reasonable players to cover some key positions, for me right back and a centre mid, then if we have a hard working no nonsense side I am back on board.

As an aside we now have a number of strikers so me thinks MM will be after some quality in the midfield and no inside info just a through bubble just maybe seeing MM was coaching in Thailand ... just maybe a skilful Thai 10

We could pull off a classic 442. Especially if we’re going to be the grafters of the aleague.
Flat 4 at the back with the full backs only supporting the wingers occasionally.
Kekeris/Hoole on the right Pain on the left
Hold their width and isolate fullbacks. Only problem is, Hoole hates doing that. And Pain doesn’t do it often enough.
Simon with Gameiro/Murray up top.
Tommy ball winning in midfield and if we get O’neil in he’s a very good box to box CM.

Need a decent RB though.

Murray definitely looks solid judging by his highlights. I just hope we can provide him the service. We've missed a natural finisher in our side since McBreen l feel.
The key will be how quickly he and the other NPL recruits improve under a pro set up. What do we have before the start of the season? 3 months?
The other issue will be they have been "in season" so will they be prepared differently given where they currently are.

That's a good point, they'll both be match fit when we are still 2 and a half months out from the start of the season.

I spoke to Lachie Wales half way through last season and he said there was a fatigue factor with him because he went for two years straight without a break. This also hurts mentally.

While the NPL boys will be ahead in regards to conditioning they will need to adjust to full time training which can take some time and puts added pressure on the body. Also, by the end of the season they would have went over eighteen months without a break and this will undoubtedly take its toll on performance.

It is almost a one year contract is not enough to get a current NPL player to perform at their best coming straight into an A-League contract.

This is why I can't understand the logic of signing a player to one year contracts It shits me to tears. Especially these boys that have earnt their place through hard training and family sacrifice. They need time just like a new coach Why should Mulvey get a multi year contract and not the record season goal scorer for the npl who's never trained let alone played at a professional full time level?
IMO it's well worth the risk and beneficial to the player and club. If the salary cap or grant changes then revisit it FFS

The main reason for single year contracts is because there are no transfer fees between clubs in the A-League. If a player does not work out you have to pay out their contract. With transfer fees between clubs the fee would cover the payout.

It was why they had to invent new rules to allow DDS to go to SFC and why we had to do a swap with Victory to let Austin go.

The sooner the A league gets out from under the FFA the better it will function.

But untried npl players are a different kettle of fish. At worst your looking at minimum wage loss

Yes but on a one year contract your destroying the slim chance of selling them OS if they do work out
Yeah i was agreeing with you. a 1 yr for the NPL record scorer is not really good enough but the others might not be good enough and you need to try the next lot. Cut throat but thats just what happens. Look at Kenny Athiu he took most of the season to get a run but has shown he is worthy once he did

So I’d post this in the Bolt thread but if I go back there I’m sure I’ll devlop a tumour.

With his trial now confirmed it’s becoming more and more clear and pretty much inevitable that the club is going to deem him good enough for a contract and these 4 NPL signings are more than likely on the assumed low wages to have more money for bolt.
This genuinely hurts my heart.
