Mariners Squad - HAL 14 - 2018- 2019 - The challenge for Mike Mulvey is over

The prospects of Jordan Murray is about the best news we can get right now. The hopes of signing a Brazilian or ex-EPL player are fading faster than our chances of making the top 6.

To be honest, the likes of Jordan Murray are REALLY good for the future of the A-league and the national team as opposed to Bolt. We are certainly going to look like a smarter and serious outfit by signing Jordan, even if he doesn't set the league on fire this season.

I asked Luke Byrne on Twitter. His reply....

Yes. I can confirm @CCMariners manager Mike Mulvey stated in the interview " that over the next couple of weeks you will find that we have signed 4 players from the NPL"

You’d have to think Gomerio will be leading the line then. His reportedly the standout player in preseason but that can’t be hard.

Foreigners look like a pipe dream again. Maybe it’s the same as Okon. You can have one in January if I feel like it

Almost didn't get a membership last year after 12 years and again this year. The last couple of years (this year especially) I've thought, "even if we are rubbish and I decide not to go to games, I'm happy to give the club a couple of hundred dollars to do my bit so that we still have a team down the track". Problem is I'm so attached to this team that I end up going to most games and tend to start each week feeling rotten because of a poor performance, loss, no heart, no goals, no attempts on target etc from the weekend's game. Sounds like hyperbole but it actually puts me in a bad mood for a few days.

From what Mulvey had been saying early on (especially RE: culture, and players needing to live here etc) I had hopes that at least we would be somewhat competitive and not an embarrassment. The more the pre-season (are we even in it yet?) has gone on the less I've been impressed by where I THINK we will be this year with our team. Even still, a couple of weeks ago I renewed my membership along with my family with the intent of probably only going to a couple of games but still supporting the club financially.

My gripe now is this... IF TRUE... finalising our remaining spots with NPL players when our current team looks like All Age 8 division, says to me that the powers that be aren't taking things seriously (I know a lot of people behind the scenes work very hard of course). This together with not taking the FFA Cup serioulsy just annoys me to a point where I become detached from the club.

Yes we are very fortunate to have a team at all. But there is a difference between having a football club (with all that is good about football and football culture) and having a team that plays in a national comp that treats it like a joke.

Point is, I really feel like ringing up, cancelling the membership for me and the family (could use the money to pay the bills really) but I don't want to. Loyalty and love for this club is slowly evaporating sadly and I just want the club to respect us a little bit to try to earn at least some of that back.
Well said I truly feel your sentiment, I have been reluctant to sign . I have become so numb to the club i hate to admit I have lost the passion which quite frankly pisses me off. .I couldn't wait for the seasons to start and I took pride in my membership .l wonder if Charlesworth would employ staff to run his empire on par with the players he has for his football team and put the trust of inexperienced to get him results. JUST A THOUGHT

Looks like the Murray signing will be announced this week.

But seriously Jordan Murray is a good signing. It's the average quality of the team that's the worry

I am not expecting a championship winning side this season but neither am I expecting a train wreck.

I am not prepared to make any predictions ("Never make predictions, especially about the future" - Sam Goldwyn).

But I truly hope for a gutsy, grind it out team, that oppositions will hate playing, and that will get unexpected wins and surprise many.

Thinking about it a bit more maybe this is a direct result of the loan system coming in and the possibility of transfers coming in later. Sign up a bunch of promising NPL talent on multi year deals and hope to make some money on them. Maybe we're thinking about 18-19 and Charlesworth is already thinking 2020. It doesn't have to mean that's all we're getting as we seem to have 2 designated/marquee player slots free at the moment (1 probably goes to bolt), one of the NPL signings could be mature age rookie from what I'm seeing on the a league site about eligibility.

If I'm reading everything right I count 19 announced players on the CCM site, 4 more players would bring us to the 23 max but designated players and a mature age rookie sit outside those numbers so there could be up to another 3 beyond the NPL signings commented on. Maybe I'm being optimistic but that's all I've got until the club gives us some good news.

Spot on. We have to have everyone firing in order to have any chance of the 6. Tommy H staying fit all season will be key. If the remaining 4 signings are all NPL it's pretty underwhelming. I'm still hopeful of O'Neill but looks like the promise of a decent forward is gone.

He has to play or its just a waste - Travis Major springs to mind

Agree, but with Travis Major, the coaching staff at the time decided he was “too big” and not agile enough etc
Because at Blacktown City they get their players on the weights in the gym practically 24/7 so they can always win the physical battle.
So he spent the Major’ity of the time weight cutting. His giant ego wouldn’t have helped either. But last I heard he’s doing okay in Hong Kong, no surprise since he’s basically a body builder again.

I really like when NPL players that deserve a chance get it, but they really need to prove they still deserve it by getting their head down and working their socks of every day.

I like his finishing a lot. Looks where to put the ball and hits it only as hard as the situation requires. Does that very naturally/skilfully.

Good move to come to a club that is far more likely to give him meaningful game time.

Quite the variation in his finishing, which will be nice for us.

He looks the sort of player that if he's not the one puttinh the final ball into the back of the net
.... then he will always be in there, thereabouts, waiting for an opportunity to score or assist.

We've been lacking that type of 'hungry' player for quite a few seasons now.
It's not only the finishing but his positioning and work rate i really like. 4 or 5 of the goals he peels away to get in great positions. Not always obvious and we have lacked that in recent seasons. 3 or 4 times he also started moves on or around the halfway line and was there at the end to finish as well.

As always injuries will be the deciding factor.

I was hoping for a classy #10 but suspect we will have to play with 2 DMs in front of a back 4, unless everyone is fit and firing, defence will be a problem.

If Jordan works out, if Gamiero can find fitness and form and Simmo holds up there is not a great deal space left in the front third, unless you play one of them as a winger. With what we have I would like to see Simmo behind one of them up front.

Maybe It may even be time for a Wombat 442.
