I rate Ascroft but ... In MF, not at all in defense.

I'd have to agree with this. His best game of the year was when TW moved him into the midfield to man-mark Aaron Mooy, the result was a total shut down of Mooy frustrating the shit out of both him and Vant' Shcip.

But what was telling to me in the last 30 mins of that game was HA's ability in going forward with ball at feet, with good passing and joining in the attack around the edges of the 18yrd.

I'd like to see him tried in that role next season (We've got him contrated for another season, have to develop him somehow ??? )

Harry Ascroft has the size similar to a Jedinak/Rostyn G and is more suited centrally in the midfield than what Liam Rose is, who is too small for mine, not that size is everything but Rosebud just doesn't have the defensive mongrel of a Monty per say for breaking up the play.

I feel Liam would be better suited with his technical skills in tight area's as a right-sided midfielder in a 4-3 (flat)-3 in behind Fabio, with his skills on the ball used to link-up with Storm/Fabio & helping Storm to get forward to help overload the front attack third whilst Liam is tucking in to help defend the opposition trying to play out through the middle once that attacking play of ours breaks down with Storm stuck up field after whipping in crosses.

Agree completely... I think he's scored enough this season, to show that he can be hand for that sort of thing too... After Wombat's vehement disagreement on Rosebud's performance, I had another look during this game and I have to admit that you're both probably right about his defensive abilities. He's clearly got technical skills and he holds on to the ball fairly well when he's got it, but he struggles a bit at getting it, without it being passed to him. I think Ascroft would serve us better if we're looking for that Monty/Hutch-style holding mongrel-midfielder that Dibo referred to the other day... It certainly seems worth a try.

Not needing to be an apologist for the Club, (that position has been made clear), but I would like to talk about where we are now.

What did we learn from last night's game and the last few weeks?

DEFENCE:
Is simply not good enough and the most serious problem that needs to be addressed.
The purchase of an experienced keeper and centre back has been foreshadowed and cannot happen soon enough.
Apart from being good and experienced both above all else must be organisers, this is critical.

Of the present crop of defenders what have we learnt, TW has shuffled them around a fair bit so should now have most of the questions answered.
Fullbacks are probably the most difficult position to fill for any A league club (more so than striker). For fullbacks we are going to have to make use of what we have.
Last night we found that Harry Ascroft is definitely not a right back (Rowdy has adequately described his probable future).

Josh Rose is a left back, not a centre back, but I suspect has been played there to keep some experience in the back four while giving Micky Neil more game time in the left back position which he is going to have to take over from Josh as age inevitably catches up to him. Neil has improved over that past few games hopefully this improvement continues he still has a long way to go.

Hopefully Storm makes a full recovery he will be our right back with cover provided by Posco. Left back will be Neil with cover provided by Josh Rose.

Centre Backs will be the new signing, plus Posco or Uscok further cover by McGing.

I will complete my views on the defence in my next post of these thoughts concentrating on midfield. which is also vital to get right to have an effective defence.

OK now to look at the midfield.

MIDFIELD:
The assets we have are two fast wide wingers (Austin and Fab), both different styles but both fast and wide and that is where they play.
We have two DMs in Monty and Liam Rose.
This midfield has not been as effective as it should be for quite a few reasons. The main one being is that with an inexperienced back four both DMs have had to do a lot of covering and quite often ended up back with the defence. The two wingers are not what you would call great defenders in style nor inclination.
Too often this left a great big hole in the centre of the field. Other teams in attack too often just waltzed straight through and hammered our inexperienced back and in attack our only options seemed to be out wide and too often Fab was closed down with nowhere to go or Austin ran out of support.
The other problem was that when our backs did win the ball there were no options available to play out and they had to play back, sideways or a long diagonal ball.
Hopefully a better back four will allow our mids to control the middle of the park., maybe with one DM playing further up the park. I do not think we can play a narrow diamond with the wingers we have. I suspect what we need is a box to box player of the style of Matt McKay who can execute effective one touch passes and be a link. I know Monty tried but always seemed to have too many other responsibilities. Rose should be that sort of player but does not seem to have the engine, or the anticipation to play that way.
On Fox they were suggesting that the City Group were interested in him. I am not sure whether to be concerned with losing him or not.
Possibly as mentioned above Ascroft could play the Jedi DM position and allow Monty to get further forward.
Another possibility is that TW has said he is looking for a versatile mid. I wonder whether versatile covers wing (where we do not have a lot of cover apart from young upcoming forwards (Budgie etc)), box to box and AM/#10.
The different combinations are endless and will depend upon who comes in, most of it will depend on getting the defence right first, but that hole in the centre of the park must be occupied.

ATTACK:
Simple, one great #10 or false #9 to go with Roy. Amini as an attacking mid who can lay off lovely passes into space as well as defend. Perez who was an out and out provider, but light on defence, Rogic playing as a false 9. Any would do and would make Roy very happy.
Of the three styles I think I would like Amini and suspect we will need someone who is a worker as we'll as a provider.
It really comes down to getting the midfield working which in turn needs a reliable defence behind.

Can we do it?

Like Roy has stated I think with the addition of three or four quality experienced players the team will click. It is really vital we get those signings right.

THE COACH:
Is he the saviour or is he just a naughty little boy?
This season it has been impossible to tell. I do not think anyone could have dealt with what he has been dealt much better.
What many have seen as pulling the team around too much (especially defence) I have seen as trying as many options and combinations as possible with the limited players available and seeing how it works.
Since the beginning of February this season has been gone and I have been looking on it as an extended pre season to discover strengths and weaknesses as we'll as to try and give as much experience as possible to inexperienced players.
TW should have a thorough understanding of what he has now and what he needs. Next season the line up must be settled with good understandings developed.

I am hopeful but it is going to be an all or nothing event.

Failure to be successfully competitive (i.e. mid table) could prove to be fatal to more than just TW.

Interesting times ahead.

Twice mentioned on the coverage that there is talk of Liam Rose to Manchester City for Melbourne City. Caceras mark II

Commentators surely you want to keep him as part of the rebuilding, Harper "not sure there is a rebuild. Pretty sure the cash is king and they would take the cash".

AM,
2 excellent posts from an apologist ;).

Loved
your use of former Mariner Attacking Mids in Perez, Amini & Rogic, and agree with you it's an 'Amini-type' of player were in need of.

Musti was sublime with the one-touch, he never shied from the defensive work by tracking back and making tackles -from behind & with vigour, winning the ball back more often than not.

Back then he was young & quick, now he's older, wiser and more importantly even stronger on the ball.

He was just as hungry getting forward to attack, and what I liked about him was his decisions to pull up his runs to the the top of the 18yrd box looking for cutbacks or pouncing on the loose balls, similarly to Rogic.

He got offered just last Chinese transfer window the same coin as Sainsbury - $1.5 million ! BUT chose not to make the move to the CSL saying he wanted to stay in Europe and have a real crack at making it there rather than take the quick cash.

So I'm doubtful he'd leave his current club Randers for us, but thattype of player is what's needed for sure.

I've prev. mentioned Brett Holman for this role, but it's his willingness to come here, the mentality to keep playing with intent and his age/prone to injury that are all the questions that have to be weighed up ....... as well as the coin required. ;)

First signing for 2016/2017 is Faty from Sydney FC

I really really really hope that isn't our token "experienced defender signing"

He is an upgrade, but not the solution. Him next to the right CB could be a decent CB partnership!

the daily telegraph said:
THE Mariners have swooped to sign Senegalese defender Jacques Faty after the 32-year-old left Sydney FC with immediate effect.

As the Sky Blues began what threatens to be a substantial clear-out in the wake of a hugely disappointing A-League season, it’s understood Faty has already signed a deal with the Central Coast to join Tony Walmsley’s youthful squad.

Though it’s understood the Senegalese centreback had played enough games to trigger another year with the Sky Blues, he was not at training on Monday and had already agreed terms to move on.

Jacques Faty will join Central Coast Mariners next season. Picture: Colleen Petch.
It’s the first in what is likely to be a series of departures, as Sydney look to rebuild their squad after a hugely underwhelming A-League campaign. Faty had joined Sydney in January last year along with cousin Mickael Tavares, but with Tavares not even on the bench for the past two games, speculation is likely to increase about his own future, despite having another year to run on his contract.

It’s believed Tavares is on the Mariners’ radar too, with Walmsley making clear his need to recruit experience through the team’s spine, and Sydney would be unlikely to stand in his way in the event of an offer.

Faty left Sydney after 30 games, having struggled to reach the form he showed in helping Graham Arnold’s side to the grand final next season, but will now be given the task of bringing experience and leadership to a squad that finished bottom of the A-League having conceded a record number of goals.
It will definitely be the first a series of departures from Sydney, although the timing of some will be dictated by the Asian Champions League, in which Sydney have paradoxically made excellent progress.

Faty had been left out of the ACL squad along with marquee Filip Holosko and hence was able to leave Sydney immediately.

In a statement, Arnold said: “Jacques has given great service to the club and played an integral part in our record breaking season last year. We thank him for the time he has given to Sydney FC and wish him all the best for the future.”

Sydney brushed aside Perth 4-0 on Sunday in what was easily their best A-League performance for months, and need only a point next week at home to Urawa Red Diamonds to qualify for the last 16 of the ACL.

When I googled the signing, I found another article from last month saying he could play for another 4 years :p

On Saturday, Bray, Heffernan and Stella were walking through the west side of the stands before the game. So yeah I think those guys wont be signed for next season. Still hoping Bray will stay with us. :(

A TUG OF WAR has emerged for the services of Melbourne City defender Alex Wilkinson, with Central Coast and Sydney FC circling.

The Mariners, Wilkinson’s former club who also attempted to sign him in February, tabled him a multi-year offer a month ago understood to be in excess of $300,000-a-season.

Central Coast are the only club to have made a formal offer, although City would like to keep Wilkinson and has verbally indicated what they can offer, believed to be less than the Mariners’.

Wilkinson, who’s played a key role in solidifying City’s defence since arriving in February, signed a short-term deal and is among a host of players whose futures are uncertain heading into Sunday’s elimination final.

Captain Patrick Kisnorbo, Aaron Hughes, Nick Fitzgerald, Michael Zullo, James Brown, Wade Dekker, Dean Bouzanis, Marc Marino and Jason Trifiro are off contract while Anthony Caceres’ loan from Manchester City ceases.

Young quartet Connor Chapman, Jacob Melling, Jack Clisby and Paulo Retre signed contract extensions in January, while City are in discussions with a number of players from rival clubs with an eye on next season.

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold is keen on Wilkinson for next season as he aims to revitalise the squad after a disappointing season, although the Sky Blues have yet to make an offer.

The exit Senegalese defender Jacques Faty from Sydney was confirmed yesterday, and he’s rumoured to be joining the Mariners.

Wilkinson, 31, has enjoyed his time in Melbourne however his young family has remained in Sydney, meaning a move north remains a strong possibility.

The Mariners are understood to have made their offer just before the Socceroos’ recent World Cup qualifiers, where Wilkinson received a late call up.

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp refused to discuss Wilkinson specifically but confirmed they were keen to bolster their squad after finishing last this season with a youthful side.

“We are heavily pursuing experience players in the market to ensure we make a massive impact next season,’’ Mielekamp said.

Meanwhile Football Federation Australia confirmed that the top tier of the AAMI Park stands will be open for Sunday’s elimination final between City and Glory.

The top tier has just been open once for a non-derby City home game, for David Villa’s home debut in Round 2 of last season.

So we have signed Faty, and are chasing Wilko and Tavares (Faty's cousin)

In an ideal world (without any further signings) that would mean

-----------------GK---------------------
Posco----Faty------Wilko-------Neill
--------Rose---Monty----Tavares-----
Fabio--------O'Donovan--------Austin

That's a massive difference from our wooden spoon team already.
Add a strong goalkeeper and we easily avoid the wooden spoon

Throw in another attacker and we start competing for a finals spot...

My only issue is how much less are City offering???

If they or Sydney offer close to what we are, then I would think that might be attractive for an ambitious player.

Does Wilko still hope to continue his Socceroos career and would playing for a 7th or 8th placed team kill any chance of that?

I love the coast...and I will always love the coast.

But if I had to choose between the Socceroos or the coast, I would choose the Socceroos :p
