Burdened with the club's first A-League wooden spoon, Central Coast coach Tony Walmsley has pledged to inject his young squad with more experienced players who can lead on the pitch next season.
Walmsley was in a reflective mood after watching his side stumble to a 4-2 final-round home loss against Newcastle on Saturday.
So much had gone down in Gosford in 2015-16.
Handed a licence to lose, the still-new coach aimed instead to entertain disillusioned fans.
And lose the Gosford outfit did - 20 times from 27 matches.
A total of three wins and 13 points is how the 2013 champions' nightmare season reads, underlined by financial problems and a personnel overhaul that left a team comprised increasingly of talented but green youngsters.
Walmsley admitted it had been a tough period, and one that may have been a bit overwhelming for some of his squad.
"We made changes and we exposed a number of players to too much too soon," he said.
"That's really, on reflection, where things became challenging.
"If you come from 10 or 12 games in NPL 2 last year to playing 25 games in the A-League (this year), you just don't know how that's going to affect you until you're amongst it.
"But the future is very bright.
"We're very pro-active now in recruiting seniority - good leaders, experienced footballers that are going to make an immediate difference on the pitch next season.
"When we do that, the fans will be back."
The positive impact a senior figure could have was no more obvious than during 37-year-old marquee man Luis Garcia's stint.
Though the Mariners managed only one win during the former Liverpool star's 10 games, his presence was keenly felt, particularly by the team's younger members.
"When he arrived here, we all were looking for that inspiration because we were going through a tough season," Walmsley said.
"He certainly delivered that, it's just a pity we couldn't get a few more results to make his stay a little more pleasant on the pitch."
