From the memory of my first job at the Commercial banking Company of Sydney, I have a little story that I told a small gathering the other day and related it to our side and in many ways its good news.

Twas way back in 1972 and because I played Rugby in a inner Bank and Insurance Wednesday competition and looked as though I could play even allowing it was first experience at Rugby. Essentially years of Football and as a half in the four tackle, five yard offside rule in RL had taught me how to kick and as the half all I had to do was kick and pass. I was well rewarded with promotions I did not deserve and once I got to go to the recently opened Hilton on George to a business conference.

There were speakers from the likes of BHP and who you would expect and one speaker seemed almost out of place his name was Rinus Michels, who was at the time the coach of or just sacked as the coach of Ajax in Holland.

Anyway Rinus had been very successful and had won what we were told was the Champions league in Europe and he had a small club compared to others. TBH at the time it all washed over me because I had little interest in European Football was playing RL and who wanted to hear from a sporting coach anyway.

Then he spoke in such a simple and uncomplicated manner and spoke about his system of choosing players and business should also define itself after it can identify what its key needs are.

Rinus then said I am going to teach you about TIPS. This was his system that had won many titles.

Rinus BTW is considered the father of Total Football.

To TIPS, each letter is worth 25% so a total score of 100% is the highest. I forget what his score each player he chose had to reach but he did have a minimum score in each letter, so let’s say his score was 80% you had to get a minimum of say 16% in your lowest letter.

T was technical, I was intelligence, P was perseverance, S was speed. Essentially he wanted a fast player with fight in the dog not the dog in the fight who was smart enough to understand complex game plans with strong technical skills.

I was unbelievably impressed by his delivery most gave it no consideration but it was something I always remembered his advise was TIPS.

When I look at our side we have speed, I honestly think we have smart players, it comes down to we have a team wanting to win and do we have the technical skills

@JoyfulPenguin Doesn't appear so but he's the only player from 2015/16 left on our books whose contract expired. The other was Buhagiar but he's just been re-signed again.

AU also after Austin..
It would appear that Austin is unhappy at CCM and we are shopping him around for a trade given we have an option on him for next year.
MV and Danny; who would AU trade?
George Mells perhaps as they have an option on him for next season. 19 year old attacking midfielder played 25 games last season (11 starts), came off the bench in the GF, considered to have as much potential as Liam Rose. No basis for this, pure speculation on my part.

If he is unhappy there must be a reason, and that's for the coach to sort out... he was one of our best and has electric speed off the mark and if a swap was is order it must be like for like ... he is far better than Danny at this stage.

The list of unhappy players just keeps growing, Reddy, Bos, AC, Fitzy, ... if true Fab and Austin with Liam Rose wishing to go overseas I read somewhere I think ... We let Bray go and kept a goal keeper with very poor form.

At some point questions must be asked of the coach why so many unhappy players ... unhappy to the extent they want to leave the club..

We haven't "let Bray go", nothing's been announced on that front. He might stay, he might go. But equally we've "kept" Izzo in the sense that he's on contract. Unless someone comes in for him or we pay him out he's staying. I don't see the former as likely nor the latter sensible so he's here next season.

How many sides that win 3 out of 27 are full of cheerful faces? It's not a surprise (absenting all other factors) that people want to move to other pastures. It's not like we're about to splash out on a bunch of top new talent. If you want to win stuff, you don't want to stay with us. If your motivation is to work hard and develop, then maybe it's more attractive.

Neither Fab nor Austin showed much/any gumption without the ball - they didn't defend as part of a team. I might be imagining it, but if that's indicative of their attitude to the club more generally then I'm not surprised they want to leave. Peahearts out.

Neither Fab or Austin can be described as peahearts.

Both were amongst our best. Its the players around them that let them down... not the other way round!

Defending starts from the front. It doesn't start with wingers with their hands on their hips.

Dibs....i hear you.
Im a defender and a screamer.
Everyone that played with me put in 100% all over the pitch...front to back. I even had Tony G working like Monty.....(ex Avoca players would be shocked, lol)
I didnt see Fab or Mitch not working but i saw two frustrated players looking at defenders and a keeper that conceeded at every turn.
Who is going to bust their balls, front to back, when their teammates just give it up under the slightest pressure.

This isn't news.

Good season, bad season, our best players with options always look for greener pastures. Because the truth is we're easy to out green - in nearly every way - not just $$ and football is a 'profession' first and foremost these days.

But yeah, no ones ever keen to stay with the spooners... unless they don't have options. We're not attractive right now. In fact we're smashed crab ugly.

Its why we cant afford a third dire season... Every season will only get harder to break without even greater expenditure.

Where has it been said Austin is unhappy.

First rumour was MV want him, they lost Barborouses and are trying to fill the whole. It's natural they enquire about talent to replace. Nothing has been mentioned since.

Second rumour is Adl who are loosing Goodwin and rumours of Kamou. They are trying to get replacements. Same as MV they enquire about talent to replace.

No article has said Austin is unhappy. The Adl article says he is contracted to us so that's an issue.

We may listen to offers, our club does this but no where has said he wants out. His agent may also be testing the waters to see what the interest is for his next deal either with us or elsewhere.

He also was prepared to come back more than Fab but IMO they were under strict instructions not to come back, they were the key outlet when we turned defence into attack. Unfortunately when he did defend it was sliding tackles from behind.

Didn't he refuse to sign a contract extension?

If true, that's him either holding out for more cash or wants out.

We will see I guess

Rumour, but maybe, if so why lowball offer or shit coach?
He may well want out as well can't say he doesn't
But nothing to prove those assumptions at this point

That may have been the case but my main problem with both he and Fab were that they did not defend from the front. Too often Roy was trying to shut down three people while these two neither committed forward or back. This was further exacerbated when Luis was on the field and we had 3 of our front 4 doing little to defend.

Totally agree PJ and as for
Fab or Mitch not working but i saw two frustrated players looking at defenders and a keeper that conceeded at every turn.
Who is going to bust their balls, front to back, when their teammates just give it upunder the slightest pressure.

A weak player would use the above for what it really is ...... an excuse for weakness.

Just because your teammates are shite or putting in a substandard effort is no cause for 'you - yourself' to do likewise.

Sometimes all it takes is for just one player to make - just one amazing effort in defense, 'to bust their balls' - to inspire the rest of his teammates to rise and emulate that effort.

I've seen it occur in games time and time again.
- It's more commonly known as 'leading by example'.

That's 'what' was missing from Fab and Mitch when those behind failed those that were in front & around them.

In my mind there's no excuse for that.
& the pair of them absolutely can't have another season of repeating it.
